Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is worth playing if you want a classic turn-based RPG with a striking new presentation and useful modern conveniences—not if you expect its adventure to feel newly streamlined. The remake preserves the original’s old-school structure while adding features such as battle speed controls, objective guidance, and the Monster Wrangler vocation. Reviewers praise its atmosphere and modernization, but traditional pacing, grinding, tough bosses, and some dungeon backtracking remain part of the experience.
Is Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake worth playing?
For players who enjoy building a party, exploring at their own pace, and taking on turn-based battles, the remake offers an appealing way to experience a classic. Its HD-2D presentation gives the adventure a fresh look, and quality-of-life options make parts of it more convenient without replacing the design underneath. Reviews from GameSpot and RPG Site emphasize that the core remains a traditional RPG.
That fidelity is both the appeal and the main caveat. The adventure can involve grinding, demanding bosses, and backtracking through dungeons, as noted by TheSixthAxis and RPG Site. Players seeking a brisk, heavily guided modern action RPG may find its pace dated; those willing to meet it on classic-RPG terms are more likely to appreciate its party-building and sense of adventure. RPGFan likewise sees the remake as a way to make the original more accessible while respecting its identity.
What changed in the remake?
The remake refreshes how the game looks and adds systems and conveniences around its established adventure. These changes ease some friction, but reviews describe them as additions to the original’s structure rather than a radical redesign.

- Experience a timeless musical score: An immersive, authentic, and diverse musical composition that captures the timeless essence and magic of the DRAGON QUEST universe.
HD-2D presentation and classic structure
The HD-2D visual treatment is a major part of the remake’s appeal. The adventure still follows a traditional turn-based RPG format, with exploration and party development at its center. PC Gamer discusses its approachability and adventure, while GameSpot notes how the modern presentation surrounds a familiar core.
Monster Wrangler and monster-related additions
The new Monster Wrangler vocation gives players another option when building a party. Reviews also point to monster-related abilities and additions to the Monster Arena. Nintendo Life, RPG Site, and RPGFan all discuss the new vocation or related systems. It adds another angle to party experimentation without changing the remake into a different kind of RPG.
Rank #2
- Turn-based combat system and characters with multiple vocations
- Stunning HD 2D graphics that bring the world to life like never before
- Explore a big world full of exciting places and unexpected encounters
- Experience a timeless soundtrack and immerse yourself in the magic of the Dragon Quest universe
Battle speed and guidance
Battle speed controls let players move through fights faster, while objective markers offer more guidance during the adventure. These conveniences can reduce friction, but they do not remove the underlying demands of exploration, combat, or progression. Nintendo Life highlights both features alongside the Monster Arena additions.
Is it still an old-school RPG?
Yes. The remake keeps a classic turn-based structure and a deliberate adventure rather than rebuilding the game around contemporary action or constant direction. Its added guidance and faster battles make some parts more convenient, but they do not erase the traditional pacing.
Rank #3
- EXPAND YOUR ADVENTURE: Continue the award-winning Quest Kids experience with a brand-new hero, exciting gems to discover, and fresh quests to complete.
- FAMILY-FRIENDLY FANTASY: Designed for kids ages 5+ and parents who love gaming together. Competitive play that encourages teamwork, storytelling, and imagination.
- NEW HERO, NEW REALMS: Meet a new Quest Kid hero, Mason, and explore magical realms to collect gems that bring even more wonder to your dungeon-crawling adventures.
- AWARD-WINNING GAMEPLAY: The Quest Kids series has sold over 20,000 copies and has been recognized as one of the best fantasy board games for kids and families.
- REQUIRES BASE GAME: Realms of the Kingdom is an expansion and requires The Quest Kids base game to play. Perfect for families who want to expand their family game night quests.
That means the experience can ask for patience. Some reviewers describe grinding, challenging bosses, or dungeon backtracking; how much that matters depends on whether those are welcome parts of an RPG or chores you would rather avoid. The modernization is best understood as a more accessible presentation of a classic approach, not a promise that every old-school rough edge is gone.
Which platform should you play it on?
Square Enix announced the game for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Windows and Steam. Its official FAQ says the content is the same across versions, while graphics vary according to platform specifications. The available official information does not establish comparative performance benchmarks, so it does not support naming one platform as definitively best.
If you already own a supported system, choose based on where you prefer to play and the hardware you have. Nintendo’s Switch product listing says Switch 2 owners can download a free update that enhances performance when running the Switch version on that hardware; it does not provide a basis here for specific frame-rate or resolution comparisons.
Square Enix’s official FAQ covers content and graphics differences, and its release announcement lists the platforms. The game launched on November 14, 2024. Square Enix’s store lists standard physical and Collector’s Edition products, but stock and regional availability can vary; check the relevant store listing for current details.

How reviews judge the remake
Reviews generally respond well to the presentation, preservation of the original’s appeal, and added convenience, while differing in how much the traditional design weighs on the experience. A contemporary Nintendo Life roundup, published around the game’s 2024 release, reported RPGFan at 90/100 and Eurogamer at 3/5. Those are examples of differing individual assessments, not a current aggregate score.
For a sense of the range, compare the perspectives in the Nintendo Life review roundup with the individual reviews from RPGFan, GameSpot, and TheSixthAxis. The dividing line is less about whether the remake updates the game and more about whether its classic pacing suits you.
