Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is a ground-up remake, not just a visual remaster. Its most consequential choices work together: it reshapes the story to ease the original’s sprawl, trims routine combat friction, adds room for vocation experimentation, and gives the world a distinctive miniature-inspired look. Those changes make a strong case for the remake’s direction, though whether the trade-offs suit you depends on how much you value the original’s full-length structure.

What changed in Dragon Quest VII Reimagined?

Square Enix describes Dragon Quest VII Reimagined as a remake of Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, which first released on PlayStation in 2000. Producer Takeshi Ichikawa says the team revisited every element and rebuilt the game for new and returning players. Its guiding idea, he told PlayStation.Blog, was “nostalgic yet innovative.” Square Enix’s game page and the producer interview describe the changes and the aims behind them.

Area What the remake changes Why it matters
Story Keeps the island-and-tablet premise, while trimming or condensing some sections and adding scenarios, including a reunion with an adult Kiefer. It aims to make a sprawling adventure more focused without simply reproducing every original beat.
Visuals Replaces the original presentation with handcrafted-looking 3D characters and diorama-like environments. The remake has a visual identity of its own rather than relying on higher-resolution versions of the old assets.
Menus and navigation Introduces a tab-based menu and updated interface. Information is organized for easier access; no measured navigation-time improvement is reported.
Combat Adds adjustable battle speed, auto-battle, continuous tactics and field attacks against weaker enemies. Routine encounters can take less attention, leaving more deliberate turn-based play for tougher fights.
Vocations Adds Moonlighting, Let Loose perks and the Monster Master vocation. More skills and perks can be combined, creating additional tactical choices.

Is Dragon Quest VII Reimagined a remake or a remaster?

It is a remake. Square Enix uses that term, and Ichikawa says the team rebuilt the game from the ground up rather than limiting the project to a visual refresh. That distinction matters: the story structure, interface and combat systems have all been reworked alongside the graphics. The original’s recognizable premise and turn-based RPG foundations remain, but this is not simply the 2000 PlayStation game with updated textures.

How does the story change?

The central journey still begins on Estard, where the young hero and friends discover tablet fragments that open paths to other worlds and times. That past-and-present structure remains the backbone of the adventure. The remake does not, however, preserve every story section unchanged: Ichikawa says the team cut or condensed parts it regarded as redundant or less important to the central narrative, while also adding scenarios. One example is a reunion with an adult Kiefer.

Square Enix’s official materials do not provide a complete list of what was removed or added, so it is not possible to make a scene-by-scene comparison from those sources. The intended trade-off is clearer: reduce stretches that slow the central story while adding material that gives returning characters or events a new place in it. Players who prize the original’s full structure may see the cuts differently from newcomers seeking a more focused version.

Why does the remake look like a miniature world?

The art direction gives the remake a tactile, staged quality: characters resemble handcrafted figurines, while towns, dungeons and landscapes are arranged like dioramas. Ichikawa says Square Enix commissioned Japanese doll studio Studio Nova to handcraft dolls of the main characters, then scanned them to capture their texture. The result is more than a general “cute” style; it makes the world feel like a set of carefully composed little places, fitting an adventure built around discovering separate islands and stories.

How does Reimagined make combat faster without abandoning turn-based play?

Combat remains turn-based, but players have several ways to reduce the time and attention routine encounters demand. Battle speed can be adjusted, auto-battle can handle actions, and tactics can let combat continue between turns without pausing. Field attacks can also defeat weaker enemies while exploring, avoiding a conventional battle for those encounters.

Ichikawa described the aim as keeping regular battles “quick and snappy” while making tougher encounters “more intense and deliberate.” That is a design goal, not a guarantee that every fight will feel easy or that the full adventure takes a particular amount of time. The useful distinction is that players can streamline some low-stakes encounters without removing the turn-based decisions that matter in harder ones.

How does Moonlighting work?

After progressing far enough to access the vocation system, characters can master vocations and change them. Moonlighting later allows a character to equip two vocations at once and use skills and perks from either, combining their attributes as well. It turns vocation choice into a broader build decision: instead of choosing only which role to pursue, players can look for useful pairings.

Two other additions add options around that system. Let Loose perks activate when characters are sufficiently “worked up,” and the Monster Master vocation includes Positive Reinforcement, which summons monsters to attack enemies. Official descriptions establish what these systems do, but do not identify a universally strongest vocation combination; the right pairing depends on the skills and tactics a player wants to use.

What else is new beyond the main story and battles?

The remake also updates the menu with a tab-based layout intended to make information easier to reach. Ichikawa says series creator Yuji Horii gave feedback on the interface, including the shopping interface. These details show that the remake’s modernization reaches everyday navigation as well as headline systems, though Square Enix does not publish measurements showing how much faster or easier the interface is to use.

Optional diversions include the Battle Arena and Lucky Panel, which can award rare items. In the new Battle Arena mode, one character fights alone, with better rewards available for completing challenges within a set number of turns. That adds a distinct challenge format for players who want more to do than advance the central story.
