What Square Enix announced
Square Enix announced DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined on September 12, 2025, as a remake of DRAGON QUEST VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, originally released in 2000. The planned release date was February 5, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Microsoft Store on Windows. The announcement set Steam’s release for February 6, one day later. The official launch notice confirmed that schedule. Square Enix’s announcement described a warm, hand-crafted 3D CG diorama aesthetic and said the remake reconstructs the scenario, battles, side quests, and systems—not just the graphics.

What the story and gameplay are about
The protagonist is a young fisherman’s son who has spent his life on Estard, a small island kingdom. With childhood friends, he investigates the Shrine of Mysteries and discovers a way to travel into the past. The journey reveals that whole lands have been sealed away; restoring them and seeing how those changes affect the present gives the adventure its broad structure. Nintendo’s product description frames the plot as a sequence of story vignettes within a larger narrative, with the main story streamlined.
Vocations and battle options
Nintendo’s listing highlights vocation-specific abilities and Moonlighting, which lets a character use two vocations at once and draw on both sets of skills, spells, and perks. Players can also adjust battle speed and use auto-battle. On the field, pre-emptive attacks can defeat weaker monsters instantly, offering a way to move past encounters that are no longer challenging.

A new Kiefer scenario
A November 2025 follow-up announcement described an added scenario in which the protagonists reunite with Kiefer and fight alongside him in a land they are visiting for the first time. The published description does not establish further details about that scenario. Square Enix’s follow-up announcement includes the update and its trailer.
Switch 2 and Switch are separate editions
Nintendo’s store listing is for the Nintendo Switch version and explicitly notes that a separate Nintendo Switch 2 version is available. Check the selected edition before buying: the compatibility note for the Switch edition says its behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch when played on Switch 2, but that does not make it the Switch 2 edition.

Nintendo’s listing does not establish a comparative resolution, frame rate, or performance advantage for the Switch 2 edition. The equal listed file sizes also do not establish that the editions have identical technical performance.
Release status, regional prices, and rating
The official Dragon Quest launch notice confirms the February 5, 2026 release for Switch 2, Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Microsoft Store on Windows; Steam was scheduled for February 6. Its prices apply to Japan and should not be read as current US or worldwide pricing.

Square Enix’s update notice says version 1.2.0 for the Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch versions was released on April 7, 2026. The notice, last updated April 8, lists fixes for two progression problems:
