Choose Dragon Quest VIII first if its curse-breaking quest and older console-era presentation appeal more, or if you already have access to the version you want. Neither game needs to be played first for the other’s story to make sense.
Which should you play first?
Start with Dragon Quest XI S if you are choosing mainly on present-day access and edition flexibility. Its official platform listing covers Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. Square Enix’s platform announcement lists the release options; check your local store for current availability and price.
Pick Dragon Quest VIII first if the premise of pursuing the mage Dhoulmagus to undo a curse sounds like the adventure you would rather begin, or if you already own or can readily access a version you prefer. Its current availability and pricing can vary by region and were not established across legacy platforms, so check the relevant local storefront or used-game market before planning a purchase.
This is a practical recommendation, not a claim that XI S is objectively better. They are separate adventures, and the available official descriptions do not establish that a newcomer needs to play one before the other.

Dragon Quest XI S: a destiny-led journey
XI S follows the Luminary on a large-scale fantasy journey. The Definitive Edition adds character-specific scenarios that let you spend more time with individual party members. For newcomers drawn to a broad fantasy premise and extra character-focused episodes, those are useful reasons to begin here. The official edition page describes these additions.
Dragon Quest VIII: break the curse
VIII begins with a direct crisis: Dhoulmagus transforms the people of Trodain, while the King and princess are cursed. The hero sets out with traveling companions including Yangus, Jessica, and Angelo. If you want a quest with a clear antagonist and a named ensemble at its center, this hook may be the stronger fit. Square Enix’s description of Dragon Quest VIII outlines the premise and characters.

What the XI S edition adds
The S version’s appeal is not just its platform reach. Its documented edition features include character-specific scenarios, a choice of music that includes an orchestral arrangement, Japanese voice acting, and the ability to switch between 2D and 3D modes. These options make XI S the more flexible choice if you value alternate presentation or want additional character-focused material. Square Enix’s official feature listing covers the Definitive Edition additions.
Square Enix’s FAQ says the story and remaining game content are the same across the current platform versions it lists. That makes platform choice a matter of access and preference rather than a reason to expect a different core story. Read the official XI S FAQ for the publisher’s content-parity statement.

Choose based on what matters most
- Want the easiest modern purchase path? XI S has an official listing across current consoles and PC storefronts; confirm availability in your region.
- Want presentation options and extra character scenarios? XI S includes the documented 2D/3D switch, orchestral music option, Japanese voice acting, and character-specific scenarios.
- More interested in a curse-breaking pursuit? VIII’s premise centers on stopping Dhoulmagus and helping the cursed royal family.
- Already have access to one game? Start with the one you can play without an unnecessary hunt for a particular legacy version.
- Deciding by difficulty, length, combat depth, or graphics? The official descriptions cited here do not establish a reliable comparison on those points, so they are not a sound basis for this recommendation.

No required order is established for these two standalone choices. Pick the game whose story hook and available version suit you; you can approach the other separately rather than treating one as a prerequisite.
