Usually, no. Buying Dragonflight and buying the World of Warcraft access time needed to play are separate transactions unless the exact edition or promotion explicitly lists game time. Blizzard did run a limited Dragonflight offer that added 30 days to every edition, but that offer ended on January 2, 2023. A later edition table for The War Within included Dragonflight with every edition and listed 30 days of game time only with the Epic Edition. Those historical bundles should not be treated as a permanent Dragonflight entitlement.
Expansion ownership and game time are different things
An expansion purchase grants an account the content entitlement described by that purchase. A subscription or prepaid game-time balance grants the paid access needed to keep playing after the free portion of the game. One does not automatically replace the other.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That distinction explains why two players can both own Dragonflight yet have different access. One may also have an active subscription or unused prepaid time, while the other may own the content but have no active game-time entitlement. The purchase receipt, account status and current edition terms—not the expansion name alone—determine what is included.

- Azeroth Awaits! Join millions of players and enter a world of myth, magic, and endless adventure.
- With a single game time purchase you can access World of Warcraft and WoW Classic, including 20th Anniversary Edition, Cataclysm Classic, Season of Discovery, and Hardcore Realms.
- Embark on your epic adventure in Azeroth for 60 days with this pre-paid game timecard.
- Simply enter your code at battle.net/code then assign this game time to any new or existing World of Warcraft account to keep the adventures going. No game purchase required.
- Includes access to World of Warcraft and WOW Classic. The most recent modern WOW expansion is sold separately.
In practical terms, think of two separate account properties:
- Content entitlement: the expansions and features your license allows you to use.
- Access entitlement: an active subscription or a remaining prepaid game-time balance that lets you continue beyond the free trial.
A purchase can change the first property without changing the second. The only exception is when the product terms explicitly add a stated amount of game time as a bonus.
What Dragonflight-related bundles have actually included
There have been two easy-to-confuse examples: a short-lived promotion attached to Dragonflight editions and a later, historical edition comparison for The War Within. Both show why you must read the specific offer instead of assuming that every Dragonflight purchase includes time.
| Offer or listing | Dragonflight content | Game-time benefit | Status and practical meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blizzard promotion announced December 15, 2022 | Dragonflight editions | 30 days with any edition; the Epic Edition was described as 30 days plus 30 bonus days, or 60 days total during the promotion | Limited offer that ended January 2, 2023. It is historical, not a standing entitlement. |
| Blizzard’s April 2024 The War Within edition table | Dragonflight listed in Base, Heroic and Epic Editions | 30 days listed for Epic Edition only; Base and Heroic did not show that benefit in the table | Historical edition terms. Use the current store listing, not this old table, for a new purchase. |
The 2022 promotion is especially important because it can still appear in old screenshots, forum posts or retailer descriptions. Its 30-day allowance—and the Epic Edition’s temporary 60-day total—were tied to a dated offer. Once January 2, 2023 passed, a buyer could no longer rely on that promotion for a new purchase.
The 2024 announcement demonstrates a different arrangement: Dragonflight was bundled as content in every listed The War Within edition, while game time was an edition-specific bonus. That is evidence that game time must be stated separately in the terms; it is not evidence that Dragonflight itself supplies recurring access.
These examples also explain why an answer copied from an older buying guide can be technically accurate for its publication date and still be wrong for a later transaction. Always match the benefit to the exact edition, region and purchase date.
What the editions do—and do not—tell you
Base, Heroic and Epic are edition labels, not automatic promises of a particular subscription period. An edition may contain cosmetics, mounts, pets, early-access rights or an expansion license without containing paid time. If game time is part of the package, the listing should identify it with a number of days or another precise duration.
The historical The War Within table is a useful comparison because all three editions listed Dragonflight, yet only Epic displayed the 30-day benefit. That arrangement proves two points:
- Dragonflight can be included as content in a newer expansion package without being sold as a separate Dragonflight transaction.
- Even inside one product family, game time can be limited to one tier rather than shared by every edition.
Do not treat a higher tier as proof that time is included today. The current store page controls the offer. A historical table can explain how an earlier bundle worked, but it cannot substitute for the terms attached to a new checkout.

What a new or returning player can play without paying for time
Blizzard’s current new-player guidance describes a free trial that covers playable content through level 20. After that point, a subscription or game time is necessary. The guide also says that upgrading makes content beyond level 20 available through level 80.
The same guidance places Dragonflight in the normal progression for fresh accounts. After the starting experience in Exile’s Reach, a new character is directed to Dragonflight content to continue leveling beyond 20. Being directed to that zone does not mean the account has been granted unlimited paid access; the guide still requires a subscription or game time past the trial threshold.

- Through level 20: the free trial covers the playable portion described in Blizzard’s guide.
- Beyond level 20: an active subscription or game-time balance is required.
- Dragonflight destination: fresh accounts can be sent there as part of progression, but the paid-access requirement still applies.
- After upgrading: Blizzard’s guide describes access to content beyond level 20 through level 80.
This is why installing the game, seeing Dragonflight in the recommended path, or owning an expansion license does not by itself prove that the account has playable time remaining. A character can be pointed toward Dragonflight while the account still needs paid access to continue leveling.
How to check whether a particular purchase includes time
When you are looking at an older key, a current store page or an account purchase, use the wording of that exact listing. Do not infer the answer from the edition’s name, the fact that Dragonflight is included, or a historical article.
- Identify the exact product. Record whether it is a standalone Dragonflight listing, a bundle that includes Dragonflight, or an edition of The War Within. Also note the Base, Heroic or Epic tier.
- Check the purchase date and region. Promotions can have an end date, and a code sold for one region may have different redemption conditions elsewhere. A dated offer is not current merely because a page or screenshot still exists.
- Find an explicit time statement. Look for wording such as “30 days of game time,” “60 days total,” or a similarly precise allowance. “Includes Dragonflight” describes content, not time.
- Read the footnotes and terms. Confirm whether the days are a one-time bonus, whether they begin on redemption, and whether the terms say that a World of Warcraft subscription or game time is required.
- Verify the account status after redemption. The account’s subscription or game-time area is the authoritative place to see whether time was actually credited. An expansion license and an active-time balance are separate account properties.
- Compare the result with the free-trial limit. If the account is at or below level 20, the trial may explain the current access. If the character must continue beyond level 20, plan for subscription or prepaid time unless the receipt clearly includes it.
If a seller advertises “Dragonflight plus game time,” preserve the listing and receipt until the code is redeemed. If the number of days, expiration date or region is not stated, treat the game-time portion as unconfirmed rather than assuming it is included.
Subscription versus prepaid game time
Blizzard’s wording treats a subscription and game time as the two ways to satisfy the paid-access requirement. The practical choice is therefore about how you want to maintain access, not about whether one option is secretly bundled with Dragonflight.
- Subscription: use this when you want continuing access under the subscription terms shown for your account and region.
- Prepaid game time: use this when you want a defined amount of access without assuming that an expansion purchase supplied it.
The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal price, duration menu or retailer policy. Those details can vary by region and can change, so check the current account page when choosing an option. What does not change is the requirement itself: beyond level 20, one of these access entitlements is needed even if Dragonflight appears in the account’s content list.
Common buying situations
You are starting a fresh account
You can use the free trial through level 20 under Blizzard’s current guide. Once you need to progress beyond that level, you need a subscription or game time. Buying an expansion may add the content entitlement described by the edition, but it does not automatically create recurring access unless the edition explicitly includes time.
Because fresh characters are directed from Exile’s Reach into Dragonflight content, a new player may encounter Dragonflight quests before understanding the account limit. That route is a progression instruction, not a promise that the trial has been extended. Plan the access purchase when you are ready to continue past level 20.

- Players are divided into two, three, or four teams; each team picks a mover and puts it on the "Planet Cranium" space. The board is laid out as a circuit, consisting of different color spaces. Each color corresponds to a question card category. Purple "Planet Cranium" spaces give the team their choice of category. The rules of Cranium state that the team with the player whose birthday is coming up next starts the game. Play then continues clockwise to the next team. Card Categories[edit] Creative Cat These blue cards are, as the name suggests, two creative activities. Cloodle cards require a team member to draw on a piece of paper while the other team member(s) attempt to guess the word or phrase, much like Pictionary. Sensosketch cards are the same but the drawer must have their eyes closed. Sculpturades requires one player to mold the included putty into shapes for the other player(s) to guess the word or phrase being sculpted. All of the blue cards have vague hints. Data Head These red cards revolve around, as the name suggests, knowledge of data and facts. Selectaquest cards ask a question and present four possible multiple choice answers, of which the player's team must choose the correct answer. Factoid cards present a question that the player's team must answer outright, and a third type of card requires the player's team to evaluate a statement to determine whether it is true or false.
- Word Worm These yellow cards are themed around words, spelling, and anagrams. Two types of spelling are involved in this category; one type involves one team member spelling a moderately difficult word (such as vacuum) correctly on the first try without writing down the word. Another type of spelling challenge in Word Worm is Gnilleps; again, a moderately difficult word (such as achieved) must be spelled correctly on the first attempt by one team member with the caveat that they must spell it backwards. Lexicon cards require teams to correctly identify the definition of a word out of four possibilities, usually a relatively unused word such as syzygy or bedizen. Blankout requires the team to use a vague hint to fill in the blank words with only some letters filled in. Finally, Zelpuz requires the player's team to use a vague hint to re-arrange the letters in an anagram to form the correct word or phrase. Star Performer These green cards are themed around acting out clues with a vague hint such as in charades, acting and speaking like a famous person or fictional character but without using proper names, or humming or whistling a popular tune to get your group to guess the song, such as with Hummdingers.
- Gameplay[edit] On each turn, a team has a chance to complete an activity on one card and advance along the board. If the team is on a purple space (as all teams are on the start space), they can choose the first card from any of the four categories. If they are on a coloured space, the first card from the corresponding category is selected. If the team successfully completes the card they have chosen, the die is then rolled to determine what space the team moves to.Whether the activity is completed successfully or not, the turn always ends after one card. If the team completes an activity successfully before timer runs out, they roll the color-faced die and move to the next space of the color they roll, or to the next Planet Cranium space, whichever is closer. If they roll purple, they go to the next Planet Cranium space. Scenic Path and Fast Track[edit] A team's first activity on a Planet Cranium space, including the start space, determines whether they will take the "scenic path" or the "fast track" to the next Planet Cranium space. If they complete their first activity on a Planet Cranium space successfully before time runs out, they will take the inside fast track to the next Planet Cranium space. If they do not complete their first activity successfully, or if time runs out, they will not be able to take the fast track, and, when they do complete an activity successfully to get off the Planet Cranium space, they will have to take the longer scenic path to the next Planet Cranium space.
- Club Cranium[edit] On some of the Creative Cat and Star Performer cards, there is a "Club Cranium" symbol. When one of these cards is drawn, every team competes and has one of its members do the activity for them. Acting is to be performed in front of all the teams. Each team may guess the answer by looking at anyone performing. The same applies to sensosketches and cloodles. Whichever team gets it first gets to roll the die and move, and play continues with the team who the Club Cranium card was originally for. If no one guesses the answer before time runs out, no one moves and play continues with the team whose turn it was. If a team gets a Club Cranium card correct while on a Planet Cranium, they may move on the fast track if it was their first activity while on the Planet Cranium; if their first activity on a Planet Cranium is a Club Cranium and they do not win it, they still try for the fast track on their next turn. The only penalty for not getting a Club Cranium right is not being able to take an extra move.
- Cranium Central[edit] Around the "Cranium Central" space in the center of the board are four black spaces, each with the name of one of the decks on it. Before a team can go into Cranium Central, they must collect one card from each deck by moving around these spaces. When a team reaches the end of the path, they must place their mover on the black space that with the deck name that corresponds to the color of their roll. If they roll purple, they may decide which black space to start on. They continue play in the normal fashion, except that when they complete an activity successfully, they keep the card, and instead of rolling the die, they move clockwise to the next black space. Once the team has a card from each deck, they may move into Cranium Central. Once they are in Cranium Central, on their turn, they will receive an activity from the deck that the other teams decide on. If they do not complete the activity successfully, they must wait until their next turn, when the other teams will pick another activity for them, either from the same deck or another deck. Once the team successfully completes an activity while in Cranium Central, they have won the game.
You own Dragonflight from an earlier purchase
Ownership alone does not tell you whether the account currently has time remaining. Check the account’s active subscription or prepaid balance. If the purchase was made during the December 2022 promotion, the 30-day bonus was tied to that promotion’s terms and end date; it should not be expected from a later purchase.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf the account has an older entitlement and no active time, buying another expansion is not a substitute for checking the access status. First confirm what content the account owns, then add the subscription or prepaid period needed to play it.
You are considering a bundle that lists Dragonflight
Read the edition table line by line. The 2024 The War Within announcement is a useful historical example: Dragonflight appeared in Base, Heroic and Epic, but the 30-day benefit appeared only in Epic. A current listing may have changed, so use the terms displayed for the product you are actually buying.
Pay attention to whether the table places “30 days of game time” in a separate row from Dragonflight. If the row is absent, do not convert the content inclusion into an assumed time allowance.
You have an old unused code
Do not assume that an old code carries an old promotion forever. Check its region, expiration or redemption conditions and the original edition. A code that grants Dragonflight content may still require separate game time; a code tied to a dated bonus may no longer deliver that bonus if the promotion has ended.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

If the description promises a specific number of days but the redemption result does not show them, those records are the details support will need to evaluate the discrepancy.
You are buying only enough access to continue after level 20
The practical requirement is subscription or prepaid game time, not another copy of an expansion you already own. Confirm the account’s content entitlement first, then choose the current access option that matches your region and the period you need. The official guidance establishes the level-20 threshold, but it does not make every expansion purchase a time purchase.
Requirements, dates and regional checks
Three details determine whether a claimed bonus applies: the edition, the date and the region. The December 2022 offer had a published end date of January 2, 2023. A buyer who sees that offer after the deadline cannot assume that the same entitlement is still attached to a newly purchased key.
Region matters because redemption conditions can differ between markets. Before paying for a code, confirm that it can be redeemed on the account’s region and that the page identifies the same edition you intend to buy. A vague “global” or “includes game time” label is not enough to establish the exact benefit without supporting terms.

For a current purchase, save the checkout page or confirmation email showing the edition and any stated days. That documentation makes it easier to distinguish an included bonus from time purchased separately and prevents a historical promotion from being mistaken for a current one.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why old answers online can be misleading
Search results often combine several different dates. A post from the 2022 promotion may accurately say that every Dragonflight edition came with 30 days, while a 2024 edition comparison may accurately say that only Epic included 30 days. Neither statement should be generalized to every purchase made today.
There is also a terminology trap. “Included with the edition” can refer to Dragonflight content, cosmetic items, early access or game time. Only a line that names a number of days establishes a time allowance. When an announcement says “Requires World of Warcraft Subscription or Game Time,” that requirement remains relevant even when Dragonflight is included in the bundle.
Finally, the current new-player flow can make the game appear to grant Dragonflight access automatically. The guide’s progression wording means that fresh characters are directed to Dragonflight content; it does not remove the subscription or game-time requirement after level 20.

A quick decision checklist
- Is the product a current listing or a historical promotion?
- Does the exact edition name appear on the receipt?
- Does the listing state a number of game-time days?
- Is there an explicit promotion end date?
- Does the offer apply to your purchase date and region?
- Does your account already show an active subscription or prepaid balance?
- Are you still within the free trial’s level-20 limit?
- Does the account already own Dragonflight through a newer bundle?
If the answer to the days-included question is no or unclear, budget for separate subscription or game time. That is the only reliable assumption when the edition terms do not promise time.
Frequently asked questions
Does every Dragonflight edition include 30 days?
No. A December 2022 promotion temporarily gave 30 days with every edition, but it ended January 2, 2023. In the historical 2024 The War Within table, 30 days appeared only with Epic Edition.
What was the 60-day Dragonflight offer?
During the December 2022 promotion, Blizzard described Epic Edition as including its 30 days plus 30 additional bonus days, for 60 days total. That total applied to the limited promotion, not to Dragonflight purchases in general.
Can I reach Dragonflight content on a free account?
Fresh accounts are directed to Dragonflight after Exile’s Reach, but Blizzard’s current guide says the free trial covers through level 20. A subscription or game time is necessary to continue beyond level 20.
Does owning Dragonflight cancel the subscription requirement?
No. Content ownership and paid access are separate. Blizzard’s edition terms explicitly state that a World of Warcraft subscription or game time is required.

Is the 2024 Epic Edition’s 30 days still guaranteed?
That was the benefit shown in Blizzard’s 2024 announcement. It is a historical listing, so a new buyer must rely on the current product page and its terms rather than assume the old benefit remains.
Does the level-20 rule apply even when Dragonflight is listed in my account?
Yes. Blizzard’s current guidance separates the destination content from the paid-access requirement. Fresh accounts can be directed to Dragonflight, but continuing beyond level 20 still requires a subscription or game time.
Should I buy another expansion if I only need game time?
Not necessarily. If the account already has the content entitlement it needs, the stated requirement is subscription or prepaid game time. Check the account first so you do not purchase an expansion solely to obtain access time that the listing does not promise.

The Bottom Line
Buying Dragonflight does not normally buy World of Warcraft game time. Treat the expansion as a content entitlement and check separately for an active subscription or prepaid balance. The 30-day-all-editions promotion ended January 2, 2023, while Blizzard’s historical 2024 table listed 30 days only for Epic Edition. For fresh accounts, the free trial runs through level 20; continuing beyond that requires a subscription or game time. Rely on the exact current edition terms, purchase date and region before assuming any days are included.
