There is no universally best beginner vocation in the official guidance; pick a style that feels comfortable and learn its particular toolkit.
What should you do in your first fights?
- Learn your vocation’s basic controls. Check how to attack, defend or evade, and activate weapon skills before you get surrounded. Capcom’s PS5 Official Web Manual lists shortcuts for weapon skills. Its button glyphs are specific to PS5, and your layout may differ by platform or after remapping.
- Use skills instead of relying on basic attacks. Skills are part of each vocation’s combat approach. Try them in manageable encounters and notice their reach, timing, and positioning demands; the useful choice depends on the situation, not simply on which action deals damage.
- Keep moving with a purpose. Positioning can create an advantage for you and your allies. Look for a safer angle or an opening rather than staying in front of an enemy and repeating the same attack.
- Give your pawns commands. Pawns are not just extra attackers: command them to respond to the fight and spread out when that is useful. Their behavior can vary with circumstances.
- Pay attention to what allies say. A sufficiently knowledgeable pawn may tell you about an enemy’s resistances and weaknesses. Treat that information as a tactical clue and adjust your approach when an opening presents itself.
Which vocation should a new player choose?
Choose by the kind of fighting you want to do, rather than looking for a single “best” starter class. PlayStation describes vocations as distinct combat approaches, each with dedicated skills to unlock, but its overview does not establish a universally easiest choice.

This is a way to assess your preferences, not a detailed matchup ranking. The official overview confirms different styles and skills; it does not say that a particular vocation is best for every beginner. Read the PlayStation Dragon’s Dogma 2 overview for its description of vocations.
How should you use pawn commands?
Use commands deliberately instead of assuming your pawns will always take the action you want. Capcom notes that commands can work differently depending on circumstances. In combat, the “Go!” command tells pawns to spread out across the battlefield, which can help you position the group rather than crowding one spot.

Pawn knowledge can also inform your decisions: Capcom’s manual says that a pawn with sufficient knowledge may tell the Arisen about an enemy’s resistances and weaknesses during a fight. The qualification matters—do not assume every pawn knows every enemy. Listen when they offer guidance, then use it to look for an opportunity for yourself and your allies.

When is climbing a large enemy worth trying?
Clinging can be an option against larger foes, not a required answer to every encounter. Capcom’s PS5 manual describes clinging by contacting a larger enemy in mid-air while holding the relevant input. It also notes that dashing before jumping and clinging may knock a foe off balance. Try it when the opening and enemy make sense, and remember that the exact input depends on your platform and control mapping.

If a skill shortcut or other action feels awkward, you do not have to keep the default layout. On PS5, Capcom’s manual gives the path as Options > Controls > Button Mapping for reassigning actions. Button prompts vary by platform, so use the control guidance for your system rather than assuming PS5 glyphs apply everywhere.
