Choose according to the combat job you want and how much exposure you are comfortable with. The four initial choices are Fighter, Mage, Archer, and Thief. They are starting options, not the full vocation roster: Warrior and Sorcerer are also vocations, and the Arisen acquires special vocations as progress is made. Capcom’s manual describes the starting vocations and switching at a vocation guild in its official manual.

Can I change vocation later?
Yes. The manual says you can change vocation at a vocation guild, so your first choice is not permanent. Treat the opening selection as a way to learn the combat role that suits you; you can switch later rather than trying to predict your ideal playstyle in advance.
How should I approach combat as a beginner?
Match your action to the opening
- As a Fighter: use the shield as part of your offense and defense. A timed block can deflect an attack, while your close-range position lets you help protect allies.
- As a Mage: choose a safe moment and position before beginning an incantation. Use elemental weaknesses, healing, and ally enchantments to contribute beyond damage.
- As an Archer: use easier Loose shots when you need a simpler aim, but understand their limited range and minimal damage. Steady Shot is the precision option; weak-point hits can deal substantial harm.
- As a Thief: do not treat speed as permission to stay in danger. Strike with daggers, then use Swift Step and judgment about timing to evade; the vocation has less heavy-armor protection.
Let the party complement your role
Think about what the party needs around your chosen vocation: a frontline presence, ranged pressure, healing or enchantments, or quick close-range attacks. Pawn commands and pawn tendencies let you influence how your companions contribute, but their responses vary with the situation. Try a command, watch what the pawns actually do in that encounter, and adjust.

Long-press pawn commands can be enabled or disabled in Game Settings. If a command produces an unexpected response, observe the party in that specific combat or exploration situation and try a different cue instead of assuming the command has a universal effect.

Inclinations are behavioral tendencies
A pawn’s inclination gives you a clue about its usual priorities, not a guarantee of how a particular fight will go:
- Kindhearted: tends to prioritize helping allies and support.
- Calm: tends to favor survival, defense, and evasion.
- Simple: tends to explore and gather.
- Straightforward: is more likely to rush into combat.
Use those tendencies to look for a companion whose likely behavior complements your role or immediate needs.

Monster badges relate to defeating a type of monster, while field badges reflect camping in a region. The manual says experienced pawns can offer beneficial advice. A badge is a useful selection cue, but it does not by itself establish that a pawn is the best choice for every party or encounter.
