Mage is a support-focused vocation built around healing, weapon enchantments, cleansing, protection, and movement support, with offensive spells as another option. This guide covers how to play Mage, which skills do what, and how to handle Trysha’s overlapping grimoire quest safely.
What does a Mage do in Dragon’s Dogma 2?
Mage is one of the four vocations available at the start. Mages wield staves and learn stronger spells as their mastery grows; you can also change vocation later at a vocation guild hall. Capcom’s English PS5 manual describes those basic vocation mechanics.

In a party, Mage’s main value is flexible support. A Mage can heal, enchant weapons, remove debilitations, protect allies, improve movement, and contribute elemental or holy damage. Guides characterize Mage as less focused on raw damage than Sorcerer, whose repertoire is more oriented toward high-damage spellcasting. Treat that as a difference in role, not a universal ranking: the better fit depends on what your party needs.
Longer, more advanced incantations leave a Mage exposed and can be interrupted by enemy attacks. Stay behind the frontline, avoid beginning a long cast while enemies are closing, and use defensive or support spells to keep the party functioning. Quickspell can shorten a cast at a stamina cost; Levitate is useful for mobility and reaching places ordinary movement may not.

Which Mage skills are available?
The Mage kit is divided into Weapon Skills, Core Skills, and Augments. Weapon Skills use stamina and can be changed at vocation guilds; skills become available through vocation rank or Maister scrolls. The list below follows a reviewed vocation guide. Spell labels have inconsistencies across secondary references, so check the spelling and availability in your in-game skill menu.

Core Skills
- Curative Magick / Anodyne: Creates a healing sigil.
- Auxiliary Incanting: Lets a Mage assist another caster using the same spell.
- Focused Bolt: Fires a charged burst of magick.
- Quickspell: Speeds up casting while consuming stamina.
- Levitate: Allows temporary floating for mobility and traversal.
Augments
- Apotropaism: Increases magick defense.
- Beatitude: Improves recovery from curatives and curative magicks.
- Intervention: Reduces the duration of debilitations.
- Perpetuation: Extends enchantments and invigorations.
- Exaltation: Improves stamina recovery.
Augments can be equipped across vocations, and a character can equip up to six. That makes Mage training useful even if you later switch to another vocation.

How should you choose Mage skills?
Build around the party’s gaps rather than filling every slot with damage spells. A Pawn Mage benefits from reliable healing, an enchantment suited to the region’s enemies, a cleansing spell for likely debilitations, and one defensive or movement-support option. Add damage or control if the party already has dependable healing. For a player-controlled Mage, the same support tools remain useful; choose offense around enemy weaknesses and protect your casting windows.
- Need to stay alive: prioritize healing and a defensive option such as Palladium.
- Facing a debilitating threat: bring Halidom.
- Want to boost a melee-heavy party: choose an appropriate boon or affinity.
- Have time and a safe position to cast: use a longer offensive spell; do not start one with enemies already bearing down.
- Need faster spell timing: use Quickspell when its stamina cost is acceptable.

Trysha is at Eini’s Home northwest of Melve. Go to the house on your map rather than relying on a compass direction after travel. Speak with her there to begin Spellbound.

How do you complete Trysha’s Spellbound quest?
Trysha asks for five grimoires. The same book pool is involved in Myrddin’s Sorcerer’s Appraisal quest in Checkpoint Rest Town. Secondary walkthroughs differ over how many original books each quest requires, so avoid making an irreversible choice with originals until you have protected both rewards.
- Start Spellbound with Trysha at Eini’s Home and check your quest log for the current request.
- Collect the requested grimoires. One guide identifies Let There Be Light, Fulminous Shield, and Towering Earth among the books. It says Nation’s Death Knell and Howling Blizzard can be found in a chest in Waterfall Cave, east of Trysha. Availability can depend on quest state, so confirm your own inventory and quest log.
- Make forged copies before handing over originals. Ibrahim’s Scrap Store can forge grimoires. Gamer Guides recommends forging all five before dividing books between the quests; another walkthrough describes a route using three originals for one Maister and the remaining originals or forged copies for the other. The safest course is to preserve the originals and verify each quest’s current requirements before allocation. - Deliver the books and follow the quest updates. After the hand-in, allow time to pass and return when the quest advances.
- When Trysha’s magic becomes dangerous, avoid attacking her. Watch for an opening to restrain or calm her. One walkthrough’s route is to grab her, rest for two more days, then return; follow your quest updates if your situation differs.
Once the aftermath resolves, Trysha awards two distinct Maister skills: Celestial Paean for Mage and Meteoron for Sorcerer. Do not mistake Meteoron for the Mage reward.

What does Celestial Paean do?
Celestial Paean summons a wave of holy light. Allies touched by it recover stamina and move faster, and take reduced damage. The cost is severe for the caster: the Mage uses all remaining stamina and is knocked down. Use it when allies can capitalize on the boost and the Mage has room to recover, not when you need an immediate heal or escape.
