Dragon’s Dogma 2 calls its character classes “vocations.” There are 10 in the roster: four available at the start and six to unlock later. The game’s four starting vocations are Fighter, Archer, Mage, and Thief. A commonly used guide taxonomy groups the roster into four base, two advanced, and four hybrid vocations; those category labels come from secondary coverage, not an official classification. Capcom’s manual and the PlayStation game page describe the starting choices and vocation abilities.
All Dragon’s Dogma 2 vocations at a glance
The table uses the base/advanced/hybrid labels presented by Beebom’s October 15, 2025 guide; they are a useful secondary-source taxonomy rather than official game categories. Eligibility distinguishes vocations available to both the Arisen and Pawns from those reserved for the Arisen.

The roster count and category split—10 total, with four base, two advanced, and four hybrid—are Beebom’s guide framing from October 15, 2025. PlayStation’s official vocation descriptions identify the roles and explicitly mark Magick Archer, Mystic Spearhand, and Trickster as Arisen-only; GameSpot and Beebom also identify Warfarer as Arisen-only.
Which vocation should you choose?
Choose by the job you want to do in combat, not by a universal ranking. The official descriptions distinguish the vocations’ tools and intended roles but do not establish one as best in every situation.

- For close-range defense: Fighter pairs melee attacks with a shield and protection for allies.
- For physical attacks at range: Archer uses a bow, including against elevated enemies.
- For healing and enchantments: Mage brings party support alongside staff magick, with a casting-time tradeoff for stronger spells.
- For speed and mobility: Thief relies on quick dagger attacks, evasion, and opportunities created by climbing or grappling.
- For heavy direct hits: Warrior uses charged attacks with a greatsword or hammer.
- For longer-range spell damage: Sorcerer’s longer casts make positioning and timing important.
- For ranged magick and support: Magick Archer can attack, heal, or assist allies, but its powerful area attack has a maximum-HP cost.
- For mixed melee and magick: Mystic Spearhand combines the two and can control enemies with paralysis or thrown objects.
- For deception and Pawn enhancement: Trickster uses censer smoke to create illusions and temporarily strengthen Pawns.
- For weapon flexibility: Warfarer can switch among vocation weapon types, but flexibility has a build and equipment tradeoff.
Pawn eligibility matters if you are assembling a party: the four starting vocations and the unlockable Warrior and Sorcerer are available to Pawns, while the four hybrid vocations are Arisen-only.
How to unlock all vocations
The four starting choices—Fighter, Archer, Mage, and Thief—are available by default. The routes below for the other six are secondary-source walkthrough details from GameSpot; some involve quest discoveries and campaign progress. They can reveal locations or events, so stop at the overview if you want to avoid spoilers.

- Warrior and Sorcerer: Complete the Vocation Frustration task. GameSpot’s guide says to retrieve a greatsword and an archistaff, then return them to the Vocation Guild in Vernworth.
- Trickster: Speak with Luz during the Flickering Shadows quest.
- Mystic Spearhand: Speak with Sigurd. GameSpot notes there are several possible encounters with him.
- Magick Archer: Follow the Gautstafr and “Put a Spring in Thy Step” quest chain near the Volcanic Island.
- Warfarer: Complete Lamond’s request for three Newt Liqueurs at the Volcanic Island Camp.
These are route summaries, not a guarantee that every player will encounter each NPC or quest in the same order. For exact quest prerequisites and current route details, consult GameSpot’s vocation unlock guide.
Maisters, vocation unlocks, and teachings
Capcom producer Ken Mendoza’s PlayStation Blog article explains that Maisters may grant tomes that unlock vocations or award Maister’s Teachings after the player earns their approval. It names Lennart as the Fighter Maister and Sigurd as the Mystic Spearhand Maister. The article does not make every unlock route interchangeable: the specific vocation and quest circumstances still matter.

Warfarer’s flexibility comes with a tradeoff
Warfarer is the roster’s weapon-switching option. Mendoza writes that “Warfarers can use all weapon types and learn the core skills of all vocations.” The same official article cautions that Warfarer’s basic stats are not high and that carrying many weapons is part of using its options. It suits players who value access to different weapon styles enough to accept those costs; it is not simply a stronger version of every other vocation.
