As of October 13, 2026, DragonSword: Awakening officially lists 19 playable heroes. The developer has announced Ryza as the planned 20th hero for version 1.1, scheduled for October 15, but that announcement is a preview rather than confirmation that the patch has shipped. In the launch build, recruitment combines automatic story progression with selectable recruitment in the Exchange using Fate’s Invitation tickets. Chapters and Hero Quests are reported sources of additional tickets, while exact requirements for each individual hero must be checked in the current game because no reliable official character-by-character unlock list has been published.
How many playable characters are in DragonSword: Awakening?
The official Steam listing for DragonSword: Awakening describes 19 heroes in the base game. The listing identifies the roster as a set of characters with distinct Status Ailment abilities and presents team building and hero switching as core combat systems. That makes 19 the dependable current count at the October 13, 2026 reference date.

Ryza is not part of that confirmed live count yet. In an October 7 developer announcement, the DragonSword: Awakening team said that the version 1.1 update, scheduled for October 15, would add Ryza as the 20th playable hero. The announcement also warns that preview content can differ from the released update. Until version 1.1 patch notes or the live game confirm the addition, treat Ryza as announced and upcoming rather than as an already available recruit.

The number is a roster statement, not a promise that all 19 heroes are immediately available from a new save. Some can be granted during story progression, while others may require an invitation and an Exchange choice. Likewise, a character visible in a cutscene, tutorial sequence, or temporary mission should not automatically be counted as a permanent playable hero. Use the game’s roster screen and the official listing when checking whether a new entry is actually recruitable.

What the official information does—and does not—name
The official store confirms the roster size and explains why changing heroes matters, but it does not provide a complete public list pairing every hero with an unlock condition. That distinction matters when a guide claims to show every recruit. Third-party pages disagree on both roster totals and individual requirements, so a character-by-character checklist assembled from those pages would risk sending you to the wrong quest or reward screen.
This guide therefore separates confirmed facts from launch-build reporting. The confirmed facts are the 19-hero listing, the announced Ryza update, and the combat emphasis on Status Ailments and Signal Skills. The practical recruitment route comes from launch coverage and should be treated as version-sensitive. For any specific hero, the current Exchange, quest journal, reward panel, and official patch notes are more authoritative than an old web list.
That caution is especially important for returning players. A guide written around the July 22 launch can still explain the broad loop, but a later patch may move a reward, alter an Exchange category, or introduce a new prerequisite. Record the version shown on your title screen when you make a personal checklist, and update that checklist after each major patch.

Launch reporting describes two broad paths:
- Story recruitment: some heroes join automatically as you advance through the main story.
- Selectable recruitment: spend Fate’s Invitation tickets in the Exchange to choose a character when invitations are available.
The same launch reporting associates additional invitations with the Prologue, chapter completion, and Hero Quests. Those details describe the launch build, not a permanent guarantee for every later patch. Reward quantities, timing, or even the presentation of the Exchange can change, so inspect the live reward panel before planning a complete roster.
In practical terms, recruitment is a loop rather than one single summon screen: progress the story, claim rewards, complete optional character content, then decide where to spend each invitation. The sources do not establish a universal ticket price, a fixed number of tickets required for every hero, or a random-pull system. Never assume that a familiar gacha-style cost applies unless the current Exchange displays it.
Recruitment routes compared
| Route | What you do | Likely outcome | What still needs checking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main story | Complete chapters and story scenes | Some heroes join automatically; chapter rewards may include invitations | The named hero, chapter gate, and reward quantity in your version |
| Exchange | Claim a Fate’s Invitation and select from the displayed options | A chosen character, according to launch-build reporting | Current character pool, eligibility text, and any displayed cost |
| Hero Quests | Open available character quests and complete their objectives | Reported invitation rewards and character-focused progression | Quest prerequisites and whether the reward is currently an invitation |
This comparison also explains why a missing hero does not always mean you have missed a secret side quest. The character could be a story reward, an Exchange option that requires a claimed ticket, or a Hero Quest entry that is not unlocked in your current chapter. Check each route before restarting content or spending another resource.
Story progression: the automatic route
Advance the main chapters
Continue the main story instead of treating recruitment as a separate menu-only system. Launch coverage reports that some recruits are awarded automatically as story progression reaches the relevant point. Because the available official material does not publish a complete gate list, it is not safe to assign a named hero to a particular chapter without checking the current game.
Claim every chapter reward
Chapter completion is also reported as a source of Fate’s Invitation tickets. Open the completion or reward screen when a chapter ends and claim all listed items. A ticket can be easy to miss if you leave the reward panel unopened, and a later Exchange choice may depend on having claimed it.
Recheck the roster after story scenes
When a chapter or major story scene finishes, look at the hero roster and any new notifications. An automatic recruit may be added without requiring an Exchange selection. This check prevents you from spending a ticket on a character the story has already granted and gives you a clearer view of which invitations remain available.

Do not skip the post-chapter screens
If the game presents several completion panels, move through each one before returning to combat. The launch reports tie invitations to chapter completion, but they do not say that every reward is deposited without a claim action. Your safest routine is to open the chapter summary, collect the displayed items, then verify both your inventory and roster.
Fate’s Invitation tickets and the Exchange
What the ticket does
A Fate’s Invitation is used in the Exchange to select a character, according to the launch guide. It is not described as a random summon in the available evidence; the reported route is a selectable choice. Read the current Exchange description carefully because the available pool, cost, and timing can be changed by updates.

Where tickets are reported to come from
| Source | Launch-build report | What to verify in your version |
|---|---|---|
| Prologue | A Fate’s Invitation is reported after completing the Prologue. | Check the Prologue completion panel and claim status. |
| Chapter completion | Additional invitations are reported for finishing chapters. | Check each chapter’s reward list; the quantity and timing are patch-sensitive. |
| Hero Quests | Hero Quests are reported as another way to obtain invitations. | Confirm which quest currently awards a ticket and whether prerequisites are listed. |
How to use an invitation
- Finish the available story, Prologue, chapter, or Hero Quest objective that displays a Fate’s Invitation reward.
- Open the reward panel and claim the ticket rather than leaving it uncollected.
- Open the Exchange from the game’s current menu layout.
- Read the character choices and any cost or eligibility text shown there.
- Select the hero you want, confirm the exchange, and check the roster to make sure the recruit was added.
The exact menu labels can change with localization or updates. If the Exchange does not show a character you expected, do not assume the recruit is bugged: check whether the ticket was claimed, whether the story has reached the required point, and whether the current version uses a different Exchange category.
Should you save or spend a ticket?
There is no official universal priority order or tier ranking. Before confirming an Exchange choice, compare the displayed candidates with your current roster and the Status Ailments your team lacks. If you are still learning the combat system, taking a hero that fills an obvious status or Signal Skill gap can be more useful than choosing solely by name recognition. If the Exchange shows a limited pool or a visible eligibility warning, follow that text rather than assuming another invitation will arrive immediately.
Hero Quests: a second progression layer
Hero Quests serve two purposes in launch reporting: they provide character-focused progression and can award Fate’s Invitation tickets. Start any Hero Quest that appears in the quest list, read its reward preview, and complete the objectives shown in the current version. The available evidence does not establish a universal requirement such as a fixed chapter, level, or prior recruit for every Hero Quest.
- Check the quest’s reward panel before beginning so you know whether it awards an invitation or another item.
- Complete the stated objective and return to the quest screen to claim the reward.
- After claiming a ticket, revisit the Exchange and roster instead of assuming the recruit was automatic.
- If a Hero Quest is locked, use the displayed prerequisite as the authoritative condition for your build.
Hero Quests are also useful for diagnosing a stalled collection run. If the main story is not offering another recruit, inspect this list for newly available entries. Conversely, an empty Hero Quest list is not proof that the roster is complete; it may simply mean that the next entry is tied to later story progress or a future update.

Several third-party guides publish different roster counts and conflicting recruitment details. One launch-era page reports a smaller roster than the official store, while another lists 19 characters but still differs on individual conditions. Those discrepancies are enough to make a static table of all 19 names and gates misleading.
The safest rule is simple: state a specific unlock condition only when it is visible in your current game or confirmed by an official patch note. If a page says that a particular hero requires a named chapter, compare that claim with the in-game quest journal and Exchange text before spending resources or replaying content. A guide that gives no condition is not proof that the character is unavailable; it may reflect a changed patch, an omitted reward claim, or an outdated roster.
Use third-party lists as search prompts, not as final authority. Verify the spelling of the hero, the recruit status shown in the roster, and the reward wording in your own build. This approach avoids two common errors: counting a non-playable guest as a permanent hero and repeating a launch condition after an update has moved it.

A practical checklist for collecting the roster
- Finish the Prologue and inspect its reward screen for a Fate’s Invitation.
- Push through the main chapters and claim every completion reward.
- Open the hero roster after major story scenes to identify automatic recruits.
- Check the quest list for newly unlocked Hero Quests and read each reward preview.
- Claim every invitation before visiting the Exchange.
- Compare the Exchange choices with the heroes already in your roster.
- Record your own unlocks by version date if you are building a completion checklist.
- Read official patch notes after updates, especially around version 1.1, before relying on an older guide.
For a clean personal record, note the date, game version, route used, and whether the recruit was automatic or selected. Also record unclaimed rewards separately from completed objectives. That small distinction makes it easier to find a missing ticket without repeating a chapter or Hero Quest.
Choosing heroes for combat while you recruit
Recruitment is not only a collection goal. The official store says that heroes have distinct Status Ailment abilities and that you can switch heroes to chain Signal Skills. A new recruit can therefore change how your team applies conditions and how reliably it links a sequence of Signal Skills.
Compare Status Ailment coverage
When deciding which Exchange option to take, inspect the abilities shown on the current character screen. Prefer coverage that complements the ailments your existing team cannot apply, unless a particular encounter rewards repeating one effect. The official material establishes that abilities differ; it does not provide an official tier list or a universal best hero.
Look for Signal Skill compatibility
Build a team whose switching order produces useful Signal Skill chains. Test the recruit in a low-risk encounter and watch which skills become available after a switch. Because balance and skill values can change, judge the current tooltips and your own team rather than copying a permanent ranking.
Separate availability from power
A story recruit may be immediately usable, while an Exchange recruit may require a ticket that could be saved for another choice. Decide first whether you need a particular status effect or chain link now. Then weigh that combat need against the number of invitations you currently possess and the alternatives shown in the Exchange.
Why a tier list is not a substitute for testing
No official balance guide establishes a best hero for every mode. A character who looks weaker in isolation may complete a chain your current team cannot start, while a powerful status effect may be less useful if another teammate already applies it. Test the actual tooltips, switching order, and encounter requirements in your version before committing your limited invitation.
Ryza and the version 1.1 roster change
The developer’s October 7 announcement uses the phrase “20th playable hero [Ryza] joins the roster” and schedules version 1.1 for October 15, 2026. That is a forward-looking announcement. It does not establish Ryza’s exact acquisition method, ticket cost, quest gate, or final skill details.
On October 15 and afterward, check three places before assuming how Ryza is obtained:
- the version 1.1 patch notes or release announcement;
- the in-game roster and any new character or Hero Quest entry;
- the Exchange reward text, if Ryza is offered through selectable recruitment.
If the update is delayed or its contents change, continue using the 19-hero count until the live listing and patch notes confirm otherwise. The announcement’s preview disclaimer is why a scheduled date should not be presented as proof of a released feature.

Players reading this after the scheduled date should use the live game as the deciding source. A version number alone does not reveal whether Ryza is automatically granted, tied to a quest, or selectable through the Exchange. Look for an explicit reward or recruitment instruction before spending an invitation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting missing recruits and tickets
The ticket is not in your inventory
Return to the Prologue, chapter, or Hero Quest reward screen and confirm that the reward was claimed. A completed objective and an unclaimed reward are different states in many quest interfaces. Then reopen the Exchange and check the ticket count shown there.
The expected hero is not in the Exchange
Verify that you are viewing the correct Exchange category and that the current version has not changed the selectable pool. Some heroes may be automatic story recruits rather than ticket choices. Check the roster and recent story notifications before spending another ticket.
A Hero Quest is locked
Read the lock message and follow its displayed prerequisite. Do not substitute a third-party chapter number when the live game shows a different condition. If the message is unclear, consult the latest official patch notes and restart the game after an update so the quest list can refresh.

Your roster count differs from 19
Count only heroes marked playable in the current roster, not temporary allies, guest characters, tutorial appearances, or unreleased entries. The official store’s 19-hero statement is the reference count for the pre-version-1.1 listing; a later patch may legitimately change it.
You spent a ticket and cannot find the recruit
Reopen the roster, sort or filter it if those controls are available, and check for a confirmation message in the Exchange history or notification panel. If the ticket was consumed but the hero is still absent, capture the displayed version and reward text before contacting support. Avoid spending another invitation to test the same issue.
What is confirmed about merchandise?
The developer announced a limited Brave Baby Dragon plush crowdfunding campaign through Makeship on September 7. That announcement points readers to the campaign for purchase and shipping information, but it does not establish that the campaign remains open or that an Amazon physical edition exists. Merchandise availability is separate from character recruitment and does not provide an in-game unlock route.
Bottom line for completing the roster
Start with the 19 heroes officially listed for the current base game. Progress through the story for automatic recruits, claim Prologue and chapter rewards, complete Hero Quests, and spend Fate’s Invitation tickets in the Exchange when a selectable recruit fits your team. Treat those ticket sources as launch-build guidance and verify every reward in the live game. Ryza is the announced 20th hero for version 1.1 on October 15, 2026, but her release and acquisition method require confirmation from the update itself. No dependable public source currently supports a complete, permanent per-character unlock table for all existing heroes.
