It brings a classic console-RPG shape—dungeons, battles and leveling—to legacy handheld hardware. It is one documented example of new Game Boy RPGs continuing to arrive, not evidence of a measured market boom.
What is Dragonyhm?
Spacebot Interactive describes Dragonyhm as an indie RPG made for ModRetro Chromatic and compatible with Game Boy and Game Boy Color hardware. The studio dates its release to Q4 2024. The story takes place in Archend, where peace followed an ancient conflict with dragons. When dragon slayer Kurtis disappears and sealed dragons begin to awaken, players take control of his son, Kris, and set out to find him. The premise and feature descriptions come from the publisher, rather than an independent review.
How does the game play?
Dungeons, battles and progression
Incube8 lists nine main dungeons, secret areas, battles and a leveling system. Unlockable Golden Dragon modes change the game’s theme and difficulty. ModRetro and Incube8 give playtime estimates of “10+ hours” and “+- 10 hours,” respectively; these are seller and publisher estimates, not measured completion times. Classic RPG and adventure influences
In ModRetro’s developer profile, Spacebot’s Chris Beach says, “Dragonyhm is the game I always wanted Dragonborne to be.” Beach cites classic JRPGs and Zelda-style action-adventures as influences, including Grandia for real-time encounters, save shrines and parts of the battle system, and Zelda games for dungeon design and puzzles. ModRetro’s profile also characterizes the game as offering storytelling and turn-based battles for fans of series such as Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. What came with the physical collector’s edition?
Incube8’s May 2025 limited collector’s edition listing describes a clear black cartridge, a purple sealed box with exclusive artwork, a cartridge protector, an instruction booklet, a sticker sheet, two hard-enamel pins and a hand-numbered certificate. The listing states that the run is limited to 1,000 numbered copies. Dragonyhm is part of a visible set of new projects for Game Boy-compatible hardware, but available examples do not establish a complete release count or a growth rate. One other documented example is Joel J Games’ Fall from Space, described by its developer as an available open-world RPG built for real Game Boy hardware.
