Drain the Galaxy: How Oil Studio’s Idle Mining Game Works, Demo Scope and 2026 Release

By VGSources Team 8 min read

Drain the Galaxy is Oil Studio’s incremental mining game about sending space dwarves onto procedurally generated planets, moving the ore they extract into a ship’s cargo hold, and reinvesting each haul in upgrades. The developer presents it as a low-pressure, single-player idle game with optional hands-on actions: you can let miners work autonomously, or personally break open new areas with rockets and other tools.

A free Windows demo is available now according to Oil Studio’s October 2026 announcements. It contains two planets and is described by the developer as roughly an hour of content. Oil Studio and the Steam listing give November 5, 2026 as the planned full-game release date; Steam still marks the title as not yet available, so that date should be treated as a schedule rather than confirmation that launch has happened.

What is Drain the Galaxy?

Drain the Galaxy is built around a compact incremental-game loop: mine a planet, load the ore into your ship, convert the haul into permanent or run-based improvements, and return to mining with a stronger operation. Oil Studio describes the game as a solo-developed, chill experience rather than a competitive multiplayer title. Steam’s store copy calls it “a chill incremental game,” which is the publisher’s positioning rather than an independently measured difficulty or pacing claim.

The setting gives the familiar idle-mining formula a large scale. Your workers are space dwarves, the resources come from procedurally generated planets, and each run is constrained by practical limits: a countdown timer and the capacity of your ship’s cargo hold. Steam’s description additionally mentions miners, demolishers and snipers; ore veins and planet cores; pickaxe combo multipliers; a laser cutter and missile launcher; planet modifiers; exploration, artifacts, persistent buffs and clan leaderboards. Those details come from the store description and may represent planned content as well as currently playable systems.

How does a run work?

The developer outlines a run as a sequence of hands-on mining, automation and extraction decisions. The exact balance between active play and idling will depend on the final build, but the announced flow is:

  1. Start by hand mining. You break into the planet manually and collect the first ore needed to get the operation moving.
  2. Buy the first upgrades. Ore earned early in a run is spent on the upgrade tree. The first major unlocks are the drill, rockets and additional dwarf workers.
  3. Open more tile faces. A planet is presented as mineable faces or sections. Dwarves can work automatically on each open face, while rockets can be aimed and fired manually to expose new faces faster.
  4. Expand the autonomous crew. Up to three dwarves can work on each open tile face, according to Oil Studio’s description. More open faces and more workers increase the amount of ore entering the ship without requiring constant clicking.
  5. Choose bonus cards when the crew deals enough damage. Once the team reaches the required damage threshold, the run pauses and offers a choice of three bonus cards. This creates a short decision point inside an otherwise idle loop.
  6. End the run when a limit is reached. A run finishes when its timer expires or when the cargo hold is full. The game then moves you to the between-run upgrade phase.
  7. Reinvest the haul. Ore from the completed run is spent in the upgrade tree, improving the next attempt and gradually increasing the amount of automation available.

That structure means the cargo hold is not merely storage. It is one of the run’s stopping conditions: filling it ends the attempt even if the timer still has time left. Conversely, a long timer does not guarantee a long run if your ship reaches capacity first.

What the active actions are for

Hand mining and manually fired rockets give you something to do while the incremental systems ramp up. The developer specifically says rockets can be aimed and fired to open faces faster, so active play appears to be a way to accelerate access to more mining space rather than a separate combat campaign. The announced laser cutter and missile launcher are listed by Steam, while Oil Studio separately announces additional ship abilities for the full game; the final control scheme and progression order are not yet established.

How the upgrade tree changes the loop

The upgrade tree is where a completed run becomes future speed. Early purchases unlock the drill, rockets and the dwarf crew, changing the operation from manual extraction toward autonomous production. Oil Studio also announces prestige for the full game, which would add a longer-term reset-and-rebuild layer, but the developer has not published enough detail to define its costs, rewards or reset rules.

What is in the demo?

The current demo is a free Windows download. Oil Studio says it includes two planets—one small and one medium—and that seeing everything in the demo takes about an hour. The developer’s demo page lists keyboard and mouse as the inputs.

The two-planet scope is important when evaluating what the demo can answer. It lets you see the core mining, cargo, upgrade and crew loop, but it is not evidence that the full game’s larger progression systems are already present. The announced full release adds more planets, ship tiers, prestige and a much larger possible crew, none of which should be assumed to be included in the demo unless the build itself states otherwise.

  • Planets: two, described as small and medium.
  • Estimated scope: about one hour to see everything, according to the developer.
  • Controls: keyboard and mouse are listed.

What is planned for the full game?

Oil Studio’s full-game description expands the scale rather than replacing the demo’s basic loop. Announced additions include ships in different tiers, more planets, prestige and a crew of up to 10,000 dwarves. The developer also names extra ship abilities: lasers, a scanner, a gatling gun and a tunneling automaton. These are announced features, not independently verified features of a released build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam’s listing adds a broader set of terms for the planned game: miners, demolishers and snipers; ore veins and planet cores; pickaxe combo multipliers; a laser cutter and missile launcher; planet modifiers; exploration, artifacts, persistent buffs and clan leaderboards. Because store descriptions can cover content planned for launch or later updates, treat this list as the publisher’s stated scope rather than a guarantee that every item is available in the demo or on day one.

How to decide whether the demo is for you

Choose it if you like visible progression

The demo is aimed at players who enjoy turning a small manual operation into an increasingly automated one. Each run feeds the upgrade tree, while the crew, open faces and ship capacity create clear steps in the growth of the mining setup.

Choose it if you want optional interaction

It is not presented as a completely hands-off background application. You begin by hand mining, can aim rockets yourself and make bonus-card choices when the damage threshold is reached. At the same time, dwarves mine autonomously once their tile faces are open, so you can let the operation run between active decisions.

Wait for more information if you need a finished content map

The demo does not establish the final number of planets, the exact prestige rules, the balance of the 10,000-dwarf ceiling or how every announced weapon and exploration system works. Those details belong to the planned full game and may change before release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical first-run approach

Because the announced loop has two different constraints, a sensible first attempt is to watch both the timer and cargo capacity rather than focusing only on damage. Start with the manual mining required to unlock the first automation tools, then use rockets to expose faces where additional dwarves can work. When a three-card bonus choice appears, compare the immediate increase to mining speed or damage with anything that improves the ability to keep the cargo hold productive. Finish by spending the run’s ore in the upgrade tree so the next attempt begins with more capability.

This is a way to read the systems described by Oil Studio, not a claim about an optimal build. The developer has not published a definitive upgrade order, card tier list or tested strategy guide.

What is confirmed—and what is not

  • Confirmed in current listings: a Windows demo, two demo planets, the mining-and-upgrade loop, Windows system requirements, and a planned Steam date of November 5, 2026.
  • Announced for the full game: more planets, tiered ships, prestige, up to 10,000 dwarves and additional ship abilities.
  • Listed by Steam but not independently verified here: demolishers, snipers, planet cores, combo multipliers, artifacts, persistent buffs, modifiers and clan leaderboards.
  • Not established: final price, launch-day feature completeness, performance benchmarks, critical reception and whether the planned date will hold.
