Yes—the Draupnir Spear carries into New Game Plus (NG+) in God of War Ragnarök when it was present in the save you used to start the new run. You can use the weapon as part of your carried-over arsenal, but NG+ does not remove the story gates that control exploration. A door, passage, or interaction that requires the spear may remain unavailable until the main quest reaches the relevant point.
That distinction explains the most common apparent contradiction: the spear can be available for combat while a spear-dependent route is still closed.

What the official NG+ rules establish
Santa Monica Studio’s announcement for the mode says that equipment, weapons and skills carry over from the previous save, explicitly naming the Draupnir Spear. The wording is broad enough to cover using the weapon early in the new journey, but it is tied to the save from which NG+ was created. It does not promise a spear for a source save in which you never acquired one.
The same announcement makes a separate qualification about progression. You do not begin NG+ with the Sonic and Hex arrows, and areas that require those arrows or the Draupnir Spear remain unavailable until the main quest reaches the point at which the relevant tools become available. This is described in the official post, “God of War Ragnarök New Game Plus is available now,” published April 5, 2023.

“Your equipment, weapons (including the Draupnir Spear), and skills will carry over from your previous save, so you’ll be able to use your entire arsenal from the beginning of your journey.” — Grace Orlady, Communications Director, Santa Monica Studio
Read the sentence together with the traversal qualification. “From the beginning” describes the carried-over arsenal; it does not mean that every story-dependent interaction is enabled in the opening sequence.
Carry-over and progression are separate systems
| What you are checking | NG+ behavior | What that means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Weapons in the previous save | Carry over into the new run | The Draupnir Spear can be part of your usable weapon set at the start of NG+. |
| Draupnir Spear specifically | Named by the developer as a carried-over weapon | You are not expected to reacquire it merely because you began NG+. |
| Sonic and Hex arrows | Not available at the start of NG+ | Arrow-dependent interactions remain tied to the story sequence. |
| Areas requiring the spear or either arrow type | Remain locked until the relevant main-quest milestone | A blocked route does not, by itself, show that the spear failed to transfer. |
The table’s key point is that inventory continuity does not equal unrestricted map access. NG+ lets you bring forward combat progression while retaining the campaign’s sequence of tool-based access.

What you can do with the spear early in NG+
Use it as a carried-over weapon
If your source save included the spear, the official wording supports treating it as available from the beginning of the new journey. That is the combat benefit NG+ is giving you: you can draw on the equipment and skills that belonged to the earlier save instead of rebuilding the arsenal from the opening hours.
The exact display of the weapon depends on your platform, language and current loadout, so menu labels may not match word for word. The practical test is simple: enter a normal combat encounter, open the game’s weapon or equipment selection, and check whether Draupnir is listed among your weapons. Being able to select it in combat is consistent with the announced carry-over rule.
Do not treat every environmental use as an opening ability
A spear being selectable does not authorize every spear-related environmental interaction immediately. The announcement specifically preserves restrictions on areas that require the Draupnir Spear. Therefore, an obstacle can remain inactive even when the weapon is present in your inventory.

This is not a contradiction in the NG+ rules. Combat availability answers “Can I use this weapon in the arsenal I carried over?” Story progression answers “Has the campaign reached the point where this route or interaction is allowed?” Those questions can have different answers at the same time.

Story milestones remain in force
NG+ starts a new campaign progression even though it imports selected power and equipment from the previous save. The official qualification says that access to areas requiring the spear waits for the main quest to reach the appropriate point. Until then, the game can recognize the weapon for combat and still refuse to activate a particular traversal prompt, mechanism or passage.
Do not infer from one inaccessible route that the entire weapon transfer failed. First identify what the obstacle is checking. If it is a story-gated interaction, the expected solution is campaign progress rather than reobtaining the weapon.

Sonic and Hex arrow gates are an additional source of confusion
The announcement also says that you do not start NG+ with Sonic and Hex arrows. Some players therefore encounter an early location that appears to demand one of several tools and assume that all of them should already be available because their previous equipment carried over. The rules do not work that way: the arrow tools have their own story availability, and locations depending on them remain closed until the main quest supplies the required access.
When a route seems impossible, distinguish between a spear requirement and an arrow requirement. The visual appearance of an obstacle is not enough to establish which tool the campaign expects. The relevant fact is whether the main quest has reached the point where that tool is made available.

How to check your NG+ save without losing progress
- Confirm the source save. NG+ carry-over is described as applying to weapons from the previous save. Make sure you selected the completed or otherwise intended save that actually contained Draupnir.
- Load into the new run and inspect your equipment. Use the weapon or equipment screen available in your version of the game. Look for Draupnir among the weapons rather than assuming that a locked environmental prompt is an inventory error.
- Test the weapon in combat. A regular encounter is a safer verification than a puzzle or sealed passage because environmental access is explicitly subject to story gates.
- Classify the blocked interaction. If combat use works but a route does not, treat the two systems separately. Check whether the location is described or presented as requiring the spear, Sonic arrows or Hex arrows.
- Advance the main quest. Continue the campaign until it reaches the milestone at which the required tool becomes available. The official rule says the area unlock is tied to that point, not to an additional weapon pickup.
- Revisit the route after the milestone. Return once the story has supplied the relevant access. If the weapon was present in the source save and usable in combat, the earlier lock was consistent with progression gating rather than proof that NG+ removed it.
Common situations and the correct interpretation
“I can equip Draupnir, but the passage is still sealed.”
This is the expected combination when the route is story-gated. Carry-over gives you the weapon, while the campaign withholds the environmental access until its main-quest checkpoint. Keep progressing instead of searching for a second copy of the spear.
Best Value
“The game says I need a tool I had before, so why is it missing?”
Not every tool follows the same carry-over rule. The official announcement specifically distinguishes the weapons that transfer from the Sonic and Hex arrows that are not available at the start. A previous-save item can therefore be absent early in NG+ without indicating corruption.
“I started NG+ and cannot find Draupnir anywhere.”
Check whether the selected source save contained the weapon. The stated rule is carry-over from the previous save; it is not a guarantee that a weapon absent from that save will be granted automatically. If the correct source save did include it, verify the current loadout and restart from that intended save only after protecting any progress you want to keep.
“Does this mean the spear is unusable until the story gives it back?”
No. The announced carry-over is precisely why the spear can be part of the early NG+ arsenal. The limitation concerns certain progression routes, not a blanket ban on combat use.

What NG+ changes—and what it deliberately preserves
The carry-over design changes the opening’s power curve: equipment, weapons and skills from the previous save can be used immediately, including Draupnir. At the same time, the campaign still controls when tool-dependent exploration becomes possible. That combination lets a returning player begin with an established arsenal without allowing early sequence breaks through every gated area.
For planning purposes, think of NG+ as two timelines running together. Your character’s equipment timeline starts with the previous save’s weapons and skills. The world’s access timeline starts with the new campaign and waits for its main-quest milestones. A mismatch between those timelines is normal under the published rules.
A concise decision guide
- Spear listed and usable in combat: the weapon carried over as expected.
- Spear usable, route blocked: continue the main quest; the location is likely observing its progression gate.
- Route asks for Sonic or Hex arrows: remember that those arrows are not granted at the start of NG+.
- Spear absent from the equipment list: verify that the NG+ run was created from a previous save containing Draupnir.
- Nothing changes after the relevant story milestone: recheck the required tool and source save before concluding that there is a technical problem; the published rule does not promise that every interaction unlocks at the opening.
Bottom line for a new NG+ run
Draupnir is a carried-over weapon in God of War Ragnarök New Game Plus when it existed in the previous save. You can therefore use it as part of the imported arsenal, but the game still withholds spear-, Sonic-arrow- and Hex-arrow-dependent areas until the main quest reaches their required milestones. If the spear works in battle yet cannot open a particular route, that behavior matches the official NG+ design.
