Dread Delusion is a single-player, open-world RPG built around exploratory freedom, an unusual dark-fantasy setting, and choices that its publisher says can extend beyond combat. Whether it suits you depends on how much you value those ideas—and whether its retro 3D presentation appeals to you. Steam’s user-review snapshot is positive, but the available evidence here does not include firsthand gameplay testing, so this is a buying guide rather than a scored critical verdict.

The official premise describes a shattered world where an undead curse afflicts the surface and humanity survives on flying continents. Players can pursue quests or set their own direction, with decisions shaping the story. The publisher’s press kit evokes strange towns, mushroom forests, undead mausoleums, and occult secrets, and frames the larger choice as healing the world or seeking power and profit. These are the game’s official descriptions, not independent judgments about how well its world or story works.
What does the gameplay offer?
DreadXP’s Steam description lists character building, exploration, quests, faction choices, spells, smithing, and alchemy. It also advertises alternatives to fighting: charming characters, picking locks, or drawing on forbidden knowledge. The description puts it this way: “A keen mind or charming wit can prove just as useful as a sword; and your decisions will shape how the story unfolds.”
#1 Best Overall
- Embark on a world-spanning quest to decide the fate of the land. Build your character to face challenges the way you want. There’s always an alternative to combat: charm NPCs, pick locks, harness forbidden knowledge and more…
- Explore a world full of unique characters, creatures, challenges, and treasure. Use Smithing and Alchemy to upgrade equipment - turn a rusty blade into a Master Crafted Clockwork Sword.
- Gameplay inspired by classic RPGs of the 2000s. Wield a variety of powerful spells and potions to bend reality to your will. Join or oppose various Factions as they pursue their own goals. A beautiful retro 3D aesthetic
- English voice and text
That promise makes player freedom a central reason to consider the game. The listing alone, however, cannot establish how often non-combat approaches work, how consequential faction choices feel, or whether exploration and quests remain engaging over a full playthrough. Those are the practical questions to check in gameplay footage or reviews based on firsthand play before buying.
Is Dread Delusion worth playing?
Steam marked the game “Very Positive”: 90% of 3,740 English-language user reviews were positive in the snapshot accessed October 8, 2026. That is a time-sensitive storefront figure, not a critic consensus or a guarantee that the game will suit a particular player; the rating and review count can change. Based on its official feature descriptions, Dread Delusion is most likely to interest players drawn to old-school open-world RPGs, strange fantasy environments, self-directed exploration, and the possibility of resolving encounters without relying only on combat. The key uncertainty is execution: the material available here does not establish how satisfying those systems feel moment to moment. If combat variety, polished presentation, or proven quest quality is decisive for you, look for firsthand coverage that addresses those points rather than treating the feature list or Steam score as a substitute.
