DREADMOOR beginner guide: essential tips for your first hours

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with short, purposeful expeditions. In DREADMOOR, you leave a settlement, fish and scavenge, manage a limited hold and your supplies, then return to trade, craft and improve the boat. That loop becomes dangerous after dark or when mutated creatures turn a routine stop into a fight. Learn the loop safely in the demo before committing to long routes, and treat every upgrade as a solution to a specific problem rather than chasing an unverified “best” build.

The public demo released on Steam on October 6, 2026. The full game is planned for Early Access on November 9, 2026. Systems, balance, item values and route efficiency can still change between builds.

What to do first in DREADMOOR

Your first objective is not to find the rarest fish or reach the farthest island. It is to establish a repeatable expedition rhythm that leaves you with enough fuel, cargo space and escape options to get home.

  1. Choose one purpose before casting off. Decide whether the trip is mainly for fish, scrap, a blueprint, or a nearby location. A clear purpose prevents you from filling the hold with low-priority items while still being too far from safety.
  2. Leave room for the return trip. The official descriptions emphasize sorting catches and watching the hold. Keep capacity for better fish or a blueprint found later rather than treating every early item as equally valuable.
  3. Work a compact area first. Fish and scavenge near the settlement until you understand movement, turning, fuel use, docking and the transition to land. Longer routes add exposure before you have the equipment to recover from mistakes.
  4. Return while the trip is still routine. Dock, trade fish, craft what you can and inspect available ship improvements. A successful early run is one that funds the next capability, not one that ends with a full hold and no safe way home.

The demo’s intended opening follows this pattern: fish unfamiliar waters, search for useful materials, meet a local engineer and upgrade the ship at the dry dock. Use that sequence to learn the game’s pacing instead of treating the opening as a race.

How the expedition loop works

DREADMOOR combines water travel and fishing with on-foot exploration, crafting and real-time combat. Each activity changes what the next one requires.

Activity Immediate benefit What it consumes or risks Beginner decision
Fishing Fish to trade and a reason to explore new water Time, cargo space and exposure while away from shelter Favor dependable catches until you know the return distance
Scavenging Scrap, crafting materials and blueprints Hold capacity and possible encounters at buildings, caves and wrecks Take high-value progression items before filling the hold with common material
Trading Cash or other immediate economic progress Gives up fish that might otherwise occupy the hold Sell enough to fund the next practical upgrade; do not assume every catch has the same value
Crafting Survival gear and equipment that expand your options Scrap and other materials that could be needed for a different recipe Craft for a known problem, such as visibility or a difficult land encounter
Boat upgrades More speed, control, protection, fuel or visibility Resources and the opportunity cost of choosing one system first Match the part to your current failure: slow travel, poor escape ability, damage or darkness

Think of each return to a settlement or dry dock as a conversion point. Fish become money, scrap becomes equipment, and blueprints become future capability. If a trip produces only more cargo but no progress toward a problem you are encountering, shorten the next route and change the objective.

Boat upgrades: choose by the problem you need to solve

The official Steam description lists improvements for the engine, propeller, hull, fuel capacity, spotlight and afterburner. These systems affect different parts of an expedition, so there is no published universal order that can be called optimal while the game is still approaching Early Access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Upgrade area Primary benefit Useful when Trade-off to consider
Engine Higher travel performance Routes take too long or you regularly return late Mobility helps only if fuel and navigation remain under control
Propeller Improved manoeuvrability You struggle to turn around hazards, line up docks or evade threats Control is most valuable when you can see the danger and have room to react
Hull Greater survivability Contact with hazards or creatures leaves too little margin for error Protection does not replace an escape route or a safe return time
Fuel capacity More range before refuelling Promising locations are beyond the comfort range of your current boat Extra range can encourage longer exposure; keep a return reserve
Spotlight Better visibility in darkness Night travel or poorly lit approaches are your main obstacle Visibility improves decisions, but darkness still brings creatures and events
Afterburner An additional movement or escape option You need to break contact or cross a dangerous stretch quickly Reserve it for a deliberate escape rather than spending it on ordinary travel

A practical first-upgrade test

  1. Write down the last reason an expedition became unsafe: slow travel, difficult turning, damage, darkness or insufficient range.
  2. At the dry dock, identify the listed component that addresses that exact failure.
  3. Keep enough resources for basic supplies and one safe return rather than spending every material immediately.
  4. Take the upgraded boat on a short route and check whether the original problem is actually reduced.
  5. Only then extend the route or invest in a second category.

This approach is more reliable than copying a build order from an unfinished game. A player who stays close to shore may value protection or control first; a player whose local waters are safe but far apart may gain more from range or speed. The correct choice depends on the danger you are repeatedly meeting.

Cargo, supplies and the return-trip rule

The game asks you to sort catches, watch the hold and search abandoned buildings, caves and shipwrecks. Exact inventory limits and item prices have not been published, so do not plan around an assumed number of slots or a guaranteed fish value.

Separate cargo into three groups

  • Progression items: blueprints and scarce materials that unlock or support crafting and upgrades.
  • Immediate income: fish you intend to trade on the next safe return.
  • Expendable supplies: resources needed to stay mobile, survive a fight or complete the trip home.

When the hold begins to fill, protect progression items and the supplies required for the return. Replace ordinary fish first if a newly discovered blueprint or useful scrap competes for space. If you cannot explain what an item will do for your next upgrade or craft, it is a candidate for selling or leaving behind.

Use a return reserve

Before leaving, set a personal stopping point: a fuel reserve, a time at which you turn around, or a maximum number of locations to visit. The game does not publish a single safe threshold, and changing weather or encounters can alter the risk. The important habit is to decide before temptation makes the choice for you.

Fishing and scavenging without overextending

Fishing

Begin with familiar water and learn how long a cast, retrieval and sorting cycle takes. Routine catches provide a dependable way to fund trading while you learn the boat. Rare species may offer greater value, but exact rewards are not established, so treat a rare-catch run as a risk decision rather than guaranteed profit.

  • Fish near a known return route until you can estimate how much of the trip remains after the hold is partly full.
  • Leave space for a better catch discovered later instead of filling every slot immediately.
  • Turn back when the remaining fuel, light or time makes the return less forgiving than the catch is worth to you.

Scavenging

Abandoned buildings, caves and shipwrecks can contain scrap and blueprints. They also move you from the boat into locations where creatures may be present. Approach a site as a separate phase of the expedition: secure the boat, check your supplies, enter with a clear objective and leave before your reserves are exhausted.

  • Buildings: search methodically and avoid wandering into a fight simply because a room is available.
  • Caves: treat limited visibility and the return path as part of the cost of every item.
  • Shipwrecks: collect progression materials first if space is tight, then decide whether common scrap justifies additional exposure.

There is no published item table that proves one location always beats another. Until the Early Access build settles, route recommendations should be treated as provisional and adjusted to what your current equipment can safely handle.

Prepare differently for land excursions

On-foot exploration is not simply fishing with the boat parked nearby. Movement, sight lines and real-time combat change the risk profile, and the official descriptions warn that creatures inhabit shores and that danger can appear unexpectedly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before stepping ashore

  • Check that the boat is positioned for a quick departure, not hidden behind an obstacle or left at an awkward angle.
  • Confirm that you have enough supplies to return; do not spend the last reserve on an optional detour.
  • Decide whether the goal is a blueprint, scrap, a route check or a story location. A defined goal limits time spent exposed.
  • Keep an escape direction in mind before entering a building, cave or wreck.

When combat starts

Real-time combat means a scavenging stop can become a survival situation without warning. Avoid treating every encounter as a mandatory fight. If the route, equipment or supplies are not ready, retreat to the boat and return after improving your gear. The value of an uncollected item is zero if obtaining it strands you away from safety.

Use the first hours to learn how quickly threats close distance, how much room you need to disengage and which supplies are consumed during a fight. Those observations are more useful than assuming that a particular weapon or damage value is final; balance is expected to change during Early Access.

What to do at night

Night is a deliberate risk-reward choice, not merely a darker version of daytime. The demo description mentions unsettling events after nightfall, while the full listing describes darkness, monsters and the need to return safely.

If you are still learning

Head back before darkness reaches the part of the route you do not know. This gives you time to dock, trade and inspect upgrades without turning a routine trip into an emergency. Early returns also teach you the value of planning fuel, light and distance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you choose to travel after dark

  1. Take a route you have already completed in daylight.
  2. Carry enough fuel and supplies for a detour or a retreat, not just the planned outward leg.
  3. Use the spotlight to identify hazards and approaches, but do not interpret better visibility as safety.
  4. Keep the afterburner, if installed, for a genuine escape rather than ordinary cruising.
  5. Turn back when the route stops offering a clear return, especially after an unexpected encounter.

Night expeditions can be worthwhile when the possible reward justifies the added exposure, but exact rewards are not published. Consider them experiments that should improve your knowledge or unlock a capability, not a default way to earn money.

Trading, crafting and the upgrade economy

Every return asks you to choose between immediate cash and future capability. Trading fish supports the economy of the next trip. Scrap and blueprints support crafting and equipment progression. Neither choice is universally correct.

Your current problem Prioritize Why
You cannot safely reach or leave locations Mobility, manoeuvrability or escape options Shorter exposure and better control can prevent losses
You are taking too much damage Hull or survival gear Protection gives more margin when avoiding contact is not possible
You lose track of hazards after dark Spotlight and a conservative night plan Visibility improves route decisions, but does not remove night threats
You repeatedly run out of fuel or cannot reach a promising area Fuel capacity, followed by a route test Range matters only when you can still reserve enough for the return
You have safe routes but lack money Routine fishing and short trading runs Lower-risk income builds resources without paying the cost of a failed deep trip

Do not sell a blueprint or a material merely because it has no immediate cash value. The published systems specifically connect scavenging to crafting and ship progression. Conversely, do not hoard every fish and scrap forever: cargo pressure is itself a risk, and trading is how a safe catch becomes the next useful capability.

A first-few-hours plan

Expedition one: learn the controls

Stay near the starting settlement. Practice steering, stopping, fishing, sorting the hold and docking. Return before nightfall. The goal is familiarity, not profit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expedition two: combine fishing and a short scavenge

Take a modest amount of fish, visit one nearby scavenging site and return with room to spare. Note how long the round trip takes and which resources are consumed. This establishes your personal return reserve.

First dry-dock decision

Inspect the engineer’s available components. Choose the part that addresses the most common failure from your first two trips. If nothing has failed yet, favor an upgrade that expands options without encouraging reckless range; the exact best order is not established.

Expedition three: test one variable

Use the upgraded boat on a route only slightly longer than your familiar loop. Change one thing—distance, darkness or a new scavenging location—so you can tell what the upgrade actually improved.

After the first successful test

Begin combining objectives: fish on the outward leg, collect a known material, then return with a deliberate cargo plan. Keep night travel optional until you have enough visibility, fuel and escape capacity to make it a controlled choice.

Common beginner mistakes and fixes

Spending every resource at the first dry dock

Problem: the boat improves, but you cannot afford supplies or a recovery attempt. Fix: keep a return reserve and fund one practical capability at a time.

Entering every scavenging site unprepared

Problem: an optional fight consumes the supplies needed to reach the boat. Fix: set a site objective, identify an exit and retreat when the cost exceeds the progression item’s value.

Treating the spotlight as a cure for night danger

Problem: improved visibility creates false confidence around monsters and unsettling events. Fix: pair the light with a known route, fuel reserve and an escape option.

Assuming demo balance is final

Problem: a route, item value or upgrade order that works in the demo may change. Fix: use the demo to learn controls and pacing, while treating numerical optimization as provisional.

Is the DREADMOOR demo worth playing?

Yes, if you want to learn the game’s core rhythm before Early Access. The demo is a separate questline that introduces fishing, movement, scavenging, the engineer, dry-dock upgrades and the transition between boat and land. It is particularly useful for discovering whether you enjoy alternating quiet water travel with sudden exploration and combat.

It should not be treated as proof of final performance, balance or content volume. The developer says the core experience and main gameplay systems are already in place, while Early Access will be used to refine balance and polish, understand how players engage with the game and shape future development. A Steam snapshot recorded 154 demo reviews with 83% positive sentiment; that figure is time-sensitive and can change as more players review the demo.

PC requirements and release timing

The listed minimum PC requirements are Windows 10 or higher, DirectX 12, 8 GB of RAM and 60 GB of storage. These are minimum specifications, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or final Early Access performance.

Milestone Date or status
Public Steam demo Released October 6, 2026
Full game Planned for Early Access on November 9, 2026
Balance and polish Subject to refinement during Early Access

Because the game has not reached a stable release, route orders, exact fish values, inventory limits, combat numbers and a definitive upgrade ranking should be checked against the current build rather than copied as permanent facts.

Quick checklist before every departure

  • What is the single main purpose of this expedition?
  • Do I have cargo room for a blueprint or better catch?
  • Can I reserve enough fuel and supplies for the return?
  • Is the route familiar, and if not, what is my retreat point?
  • Am I deliberately choosing night, or merely failing to turn back in time?
  • Does my current boat upgrade solve the problem I actually encountered?
  • If a land site becomes dangerous, can I leave without spending my last reserve?

Follow that checklist until the loop becomes automatic. Then increase only one source of risk at a time—distance, darkness, a new site or a longer stay—so each expedition teaches you something useful instead of making failure impossible to diagnose.
