dreamweaverctrls.dll is the Macromedia Dreamweaver MX custom-controls assembly for .NET. It is not a Windows component, and the correct repair is normally to restore the original file from Dreamweaver MX to the affected ASP.NET website’s bin folder, not to download a replacement into System32.
The 60-second answer
First determine where the error appears.
If it appears while an ASP.NET page loads, restore the original file from:

What dreamweaverctrls.dll does
Dreamweaver MX generated ASP.NET pages that used custom tags. Those tags were provided by an assembly named DreamweaverCtrls. A generated page could contain a registration directive similar to this:
<%@ Register TagPrefix="MM"
Namespace="DreamweaverCtrls"
Assembly="DreamweaverCtrls,version=1.0.0.0,publicKeyToken=836f606ede05d46a,culture=neutral" %>
This directive tells ASP.NET where the custom controls belong and which assembly supplies them. When the application compiles the page, ASP.NET must be able to resolve DreamweaverCtrls.dll.

A generic message saying “the specified module could not be found” can refer to the named DLL or to a dependency. It does not always identify the exact missing component.
Fix 1: Restore the assembly to the ASP.NET site
Use this fix when the error appears in a browser, IIS, an ASP.NET development server, or while compiling a Dreamweaver-generated page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems1. Find the original Dreamweaver file
Open File Explorer and browse to the Dreamweaver MX installation folder.
The documented source path is:
Dreamweaver MXConfigurationServerBehaviorsSharedASP.NetScripts
Look for:
DreamweaverCtrls.dll
Windows normally ignores capitalization in file paths, so DreamweaverCtrls.dll and dreamweaverctrls.dll refer to the same filename. The assembly identity referenced by the ASP.NET page still needs to match the copy supplied by the appropriate Dreamweaver release.
If the file is not present, do not download a random replacement. Continue to the reinstall section.
2. Locate the correct website
Find the ASP.NET application directory used by the failing page. It may be:
- A local project folder
- An IIS website directory
- A virtual-directory folder
- A development-server project directory
The application may already contain a folder named:
bin
If it does not, create one in the application’s root directory:
- Right-click inside the website folder.
- Select New.
- Select Folder.
- Name it
bin.
Do not place the file beside the Windows executable, in System32, or in an unrelated project directory.
3. Copy the original file
- Right-click
DreamweaverCtrls.dllin the DreamweaverScriptsfolder. - Select Copy.
- Open the ASP.NET application’s
binfolder. - Right-click an empty area.
- Select Paste.
- Approve the administrator prompt if Windows requests it.
If the application is configured as a separate IIS application, copy the assembly into that application’s own bin folder. A parent website’s bin folder may not be used by a child application with its own application boundary.
4. Restart the application
After copying the file:
- Close the browser and development tools.
- If using IIS, open IIS Manager.
- Select the server or application.
- Select Restart or recycle the relevant application pool.
- If using a development server, stop and start it again.
- Reload the ASP.NET page.
A successful repair usually changes the error immediately. The page should get past the DreamweaverCtrls assembly or parser error.
If the same error remains, inspect the full path in the error and confirm that it points to the site you just repaired. A common mistake is restoring the file to one copy of the project while IIS is serving another copy.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall Dreamweaver MX
Use this method when:
- Dreamweaver itself reports that the file is missing.
- The original
Scriptsfolder is empty. - The installation was interrupted.
- The file was deleted from the program directory.
- The project was moved to a new computer without the Dreamweaver support files.
Back up your websites, preferences, extensions, and license information first.
If the installer offers repair
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Macromedia Dreamweaver MX.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Older Dreamweaver installers may instead be listed in Control Panel:

- Press Enter.
- Select Macromedia Dreamweaver MX.
- Choose Change.
- Select the repair option if offered.
After repair, check whether this file has returned:

If repair does not restore it
Use the original legitimate Dreamweaver MX installer or installation media. Adobe’s surviving archived support material documents Dreamweaver MX updates and ASP.NET-related fixes, but it does not guarantee a current full-product installer for every user.
If you must remove the existing installation:
- Back up your site folders.
- Export or record important Dreamweaver settings.
- Uninstall Dreamweaver MX from Installed apps or Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall from your original trusted media.
- Apply the appropriate official update available for your licensed product.
- Restore the website assembly to the application’s
binfolder.
The definitive fix for a missing application-owned DLL is restoring the matching application installation. A current .NET runtime cannot recreate this file.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine carefully
Security software can remove an old DLL, particularly when the file is unusual or comes from legacy software. That does not prove that the file was a false positive.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

To check Microsoft Defender:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry whose path matches the Dreamweaver installation or your website’s
binfolder.
Do not restore the file merely because its name matches. First verify that:
- It came from your original Dreamweaver installation.
- The installer or media is trusted.
- The detection is not associated with a modified or downloaded replacement.
- The file is not being recreated by an untrusted program.
If you confirm that the original file was quarantined, use the security product’s restore process, then copy the restored original into the site’s bin folder if required. Rescan the installer or media before continuing.
There is no verified file-specific modern antivirus false positive that should be assumed for every copy of dreamweaverctrls.dll.
Fix 4: Remove stale or incorrect copies
The file may exist but still fail because the application is loading the wrong copy.
Search for copies of the file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Search for:
text
DreamweaverCtrls.dll
- Record each location before deleting anything.
Pay particular attention to:
- The ASP.NET application’s
binfolder - The website root
- A different copy of the same project
- The Dreamweaver installation directory
- The Global Assembly Cache, if the application was deliberately installed there
Do not delete copies blindly. First identify which application is failing and which directory IIS or the development server is actually using.
A website may contain the DLL in its root folder while ASP.NET expects it under bin. Copying it to the documented location is usually safer than changing the application configuration.
If the error reports an assembly version mismatch, the application may be finding a different copy than the one supplied by the matching Dreamweaver release. Remove stale copies only after backing them up and confirming which copy the application should use.
Restart IIS or the development server after changing assemblies. A running application can retain the old assembly until it restarts.

Fix 5: Check legacy .NET compatibility
Dreamweaver MX’s ASP.NET tooling belongs to the .NET Framework 1.1 era. Current Windows versions may not run the complete Dreamweaver MX and old ASP.NET toolchain reliably, even after the missing DLL is restored.
Installing a current .NET runtime does not install DreamweaverCtrls.dll.

- Review the available .NET Framework features.
- Enable only the framework feature required by the application.
- Select OK.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
Do not assume that enabling a modern framework version makes an application targeting .NET Framework 1.1 compatible. Microsoft documents migration limitations for applications built for the old framework. The practical choices may be:

- Migrate the ASP.NET application to a supported framework.
- Keep the original Dreamweaver installation only for maintaining old source files.
- Use the old project’s documented deployment environment.
If the missing assembly error disappears but the application then produces unrelated parser, compiler, or framework errors, the remaining problem is likely compatibility rather than the DLL itself.
Fix 6: Understand the BC30037 error correctly
Dreamweaver’s release documentation also describes an ASP.NET compiler error:
Compiler Error Message: BC30037: Character is not valid.
That error can result from an incorrectly appended semicolon in generated Visual Basic ASP.NET code. It is not proof that DreamweaverCtrls.dll is missing.
If the page now finds the assembly but reports BC30037:
- Open the generated ASP.NET page.
- Inspect the line identified by the compiler.
- Look for an incorrectly appended semicolon or malformed generated VB code.
- Correct the generated source or regenerate the page with the offending Dreamweaver behavior removed.
- Recompile the application.
Do not replace the DLL repeatedly for a source-code syntax error.

SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party Dreamweaver assembly.
Use them when Windows itself shows other corruption symptoms, system components fail, or multiple unrelated Windows files are damaged.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow

These commands can repair Windows-protected components. They will not recreate the original file in the Dreamweaver installation or copy it into an ASP.NET site’s bin directory.

Fix 8: Do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose native COM registration functions. It is not the normal deployment method for this managed ASP.NET assembly.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Running commands such as these is not the correct repair:
regsvr32 dreamweaverctrls.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32dreamweaverctrls.dll
They may produce an entry-point error, an architecture error, or misleadingly suggest that registration succeeded without fixing ASP.NET assembly resolution.
Microsoft’s Regasm.exe applies to managed assemblies being exposed to COM clients. That is a different scenario. Do not use Regasm.exe merely because an ASP.NET page cannot find DreamweaverCtrls.
The documented deployment approaches are:
- Copy the assembly into the application’s
bindirectory. - Use the Global Assembly Cache only when the application was deliberately designed and configured for that deployment model.
- Restore the file from the matching Dreamweaver installation.
Fix 9: Do not install unrelated runtimes or drivers
There is no evidence that Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, a printer driver, or a graphics driver will restore this file. Installing unrelated packages can add complexity without changing the missing assembly.

It manages hardware drivers, while dreamweaverctrls.dll belongs to Macromedia Dreamweaver MX and ASP.NET.
If you are separately repairing hardware drivers after a wider Windows migration:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver from the hardware manufacturer.
Do not expect that process to repair Dreamweaver.
If manually checking many hardware vendors and driver versions is slowing down a separate driver repair, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported driver issues; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is unrelated to restoring the Dreamweaver assembly itself.
32-bit and 64-bit Windows
Dreamweaver MX is legacy software, and its components may behave differently on 64-bit Windows. Do not infer that 64-bit Windows requires a second 64-bit copy of the file.
The important rules are:
- Use the file supplied by the matching Dreamweaver installation.
- Keep it with the ASP.NET application that needs it.
- Do not move it into
System32orSysWOW64. - Do not replace it with a file from another release.
- Treat “not designed to run on Windows” as a possible loader, architecture, corruption, or compatibility message, not as proof of a Dreamweaver-specific defect.
If a restored file still produces a loader error, verify its provenance and inspect the complete path requested by the application. A damaged file or missing dependency can produce a message that looks like a simple missing-DLL error.
What if the original installer or CD is unavailable
Do not use a random DLL download website. An arbitrary replacement can contain malware, have the wrong assembly identity, be damaged, or fail to match the ASP.NET page. It also leaves the incomplete Dreamweaver installation unresolved.
Safer options are:
- Search your own backed-up Dreamweaver installation folders.
- Check original installation media.
- Ask the organization that maintains the site for its approved installer and deployment files.
- Check the application’s source-control or deployment archive for the original
bincopy. - Use a supported migration or a controlled legacy environment.
- Contact the software owner or administrator responsible for the licensed product.
Do not trust a file solely because its filename is correct.
Final diagnostic checklist
Work through this list before making further changes:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Does the error appear in Dreamweaver or while an ASP.NET page runs?
- Is the original file present under the Dreamweaver
Scriptspath? - Is the file in the failing application’s
binfolder? - Is IIS serving the same project folder you repaired?
- Does a separate virtual directory have its own
binfolder? - Did you restart IIS or the development server?
- Are there stale copies in the project root or another deployment folder?
- Was the file quarantined by security software?
- Does the assembly version in the page directive match the supplied application copy?
- Is the remaining message actually a compiler or parser error?
- Is the application dependent on an obsolete .NET Framework version?
- Are you trying to use
regsvr32on a managed assembly? - Are you mistakenly treating this as a Windows system file?
The safest repair is to restore the original Macromedia Dreamweaver MX assembly to the ASP.NET application’s bin directory, or repair the Dreamweaver installation when the original file is missing. If that restores assembly resolution but the old project still fails, the next issue is likely legacy framework or application compatibility rather than dreamweaverctrls.dll itself.
