Play DREDGE if you want the most approachable fishing-first horror game: pilot a trawler, manage catches and curios, sell them, complete quests, research equipment and upgrade your boat while darkness increases the danger. Choose Sunless Sea for a far harsher, text-heavy Gothic survival RPG, or The Sinking City Remastered for open-world Lovecraftian detective work, combat and psychological horror. The three share maritime dread, but they are not interchangeable fishing games.

What each game is actually trying to do

The word “Lovecraftian” covers very different kinds of play here. DREDGE turns an ordinary commercial fishing routine into a compact horror adventure. Sunless Sea makes the entire voyage a survival role-playing game built around navigation, resources, crew morale and an enormous amount of prose. The Sinking City Remastered uses a flooded city as the setting for detective cases, combat and sanity-threatening investigation.

That distinction matters more than their shared imagery. If you want to cast lines, sort cargo and improve a boat, only DREDGE puts that loop at the center. If you want to read branching stories and accept repeated deaths as part of learning the world, Sunless Sea is the better fit. If your ideal Lovecraft game involves examining crime scenes, following clues and fighting monsters on foot, The Sinking City Remastered is the relevant choice.

Why DREDGE is the best first recommendation

A complete fishing loop, not a fishing-themed setting

DREDGE’s central activity is operating a small trawler. You find fishing spots, catch different species and curios, fit the haul into limited cargo space, then decide what to sell, keep for a quest or use to progress. Research unlocks better equipment, and boat upgrades let you reach more dangerous or distant waters. Those choices make the fishing itself meaningful: every trip is a calculation about capacity, time and risk rather than a decorative minigame.

Day and night create the pressure

The sea is safer in daylight. Staying out after dark increases the threat level, changing what you encounter and making a routine return trip increasingly hazardous. That structure gives DREDGE its horror rhythm: profitable exploration tempts you to remain at sea, while the clock tells you when caution is wiser than one more catch. You can approach the game as an atmospheric adventure first and let the supernatural elements intensify as you become more capable.

Approachable without being empty

The game’s surface presentation is colorful and readable, which makes the first hours easier to enter than a relentlessly bleak survival game. Underneath, it still offers equipment decisions, cargo management, quests and mysteries. The official description calls it a “single-player fishing adventure with a sinister undercurrent,” while the press kit classifies it as Adventure/Horror. That combination explains why it works for players who want horror tension without beginning in a dense role-playing system.

How much content is in the sea?

Black Salt Games’ official site says the game includes more than 125 deep-sea denizens (page information current in 2026). That figure describes the range of creatures and finds available to discover; it does not mean every encounter is equally dangerous or that the game is a conventional creature-collection title. The practical appeal is variety: new waters and equipment continually give you reasons to revisit the fishing loop.

Is DREDGE actually a horror game?

Yes, but it is a gradual, game-system-driven form of horror rather than a constant jump-scare experience. Fishing, selling and upgrading remain useful activities even when the sea becomes strange. Horror arrives through the contrast between a familiar working boat and what appears when visibility, time and sanity-like pressure deteriorate. The result is suspense, menace and grotesque discovery embedded in a management loop.

  • Expect: escalating danger after sunset, unsettling sea life, supernatural events, ominous exploration and a persistent sense that the profitable choice may be unsafe.
  • Do not expect: the long prose passages and role-playing penalties of Sunless Sea, or the gunplay and formal detective investigations of The Sinking City Remastered.
  • Best description: a fishing adventure whose systems gradually become a horror story.

Players who require explicit Lovecraftian investigation may find DREDGE too indirect. Players who want an approachable introduction to maritime cosmic horror will usually find its escalation more welcoming than the alternatives.

When Sunless Sea is the better choice

A survival RPG where the voyage is the story

Failbetter Games describes Sunless Sea as a “Gothic Horror RPG with a focus on exploration, exquisite storytelling and frequent death.” You steer through an underground ocean, but navigation is only one part of the problem. Supplies, trade, ship upgrades, real-time combat, crew fear and sanity all compete for your attention. A voyage can fail because you misjudged a fight, ran short of resources or pushed the crew beyond what they could endure.

The prose is the main attraction

The cited store page states that Sunless Sea contains more than 350,000 words of stories and secrets (Failbetter Games, 2015). This is not background flavor around a fishing loop: reading, choosing and remembering consequences are central activities. Ports and discoveries offer distinct narrative threads, and your decisions shape what the captain experiences. If your favorite part of DREDGE was uncovering the world’s implied history, Sunless Sea offers a much larger written universe, but asks you to read substantially more.

Why it feels harder than DREDGE

Sunless Sea is harsher because several systems can punish a single bad decision. The ship, crew and supplies are all vulnerable, combat unfolds in real time, and death is an expected possibility rather than an exceptional failure. Its interface and terminology also demand more patience. DREDGE generally teaches its fishing, cargo and upgrade loop in a gentler sequence; Sunless Sea expects you to learn through risk, experimentation and occasionally losing a captain.

Choose it after DREDGE if you specifically want more text, more interlocking survival systems and a world that treats failure as part of the narrative. Do not choose it solely because both games involve a boat and dark waters.

When The Sinking City Remastered is the better choice

Lovecraftian investigation comes first

Frogwares presents The Sinking City as an adventure and investigation game set in an open world inspired by H. P. Lovecraft. The remastered edition places you in half-submerged Oakmont as a private investigator. You examine cases, gather evidence, interpret clues and make decisions that can lead to multiple solutions. The fantasy is not “be a fisherman who finds something impossible”; it is “solve a city-wide mystery while the impossible damages your mind.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Movement and combat are broader than a boat simulator

Oakmont is explored on foot as well as by boat, and diving expands the spaces you can investigate. Combat is a regular part of the experience, so weapon handling, enemy encounters and resource use matter alongside deduction. Mental-health management reinforces the psychological-horror theme. These systems make the game a much better match for someone who wants an action-adventure detective game than for someone searching for a relaxing maritime routine.

Rank #2
Dredge [Deluxe Edition]
  • DREDGE is a singleplayer fishing adventure with a sinister undernurent
  • ERASE A MYGICE: Captain your fishing coach across a collection of remote islands, each with its own uninhabited to meet, wildlife to emerge, and stories about growing
  • Drive depths: Scour the sea for hidden solutions and complete quests to provide access to new abilies
  • Explore your craft: Research special equipment and upgrade your boat capabilities to provide access to rare fish and worthy deep-sea trips

What it does not replace

Although boats and water are important to the setting, fishing is not the core activity. You will not spend the campaign optimizing catches, arranging a hold or researching fishing equipment in the way DREDGE does. The Sinking City Remastered is the direct answer to “Which of these has the most explicit Lovecraftian investigation?” It is not the answer to “Which has the best fishing?”

Which game has the best fishing?

DREDGE, by a wide margin. It is the only game in this comparison whose primary loop is fishing, catch management and boat upgrades. The other two use maritime travel for different purposes: Sunless Sea for navigation, trade and survival; The Sinking City Remastered for transport between investigation areas and diving locations.

Fishing question Best answer Why
Which game makes catching and selling fish the main progression loop? DREDGE Catches, cargo, quests, research and trawler upgrades are interlocked.
Which game gives the deepest sea-survival simulation? Sunless Sea Supplies, crew fear and sanity, trade, combat and ship condition all affect a voyage.
Which game uses water mainly to support investigation? The Sinking City Remastered Boat travel and diving serve open-world cases rather than a fishing economy.

What should you play after DREDGE?

Choose Sunless Sea for a harder, more literary follow-up

Pick Sunless Sea if DREDGE left you wanting a larger world, more written lore and consequences that extend beyond a single fishing trip. Be ready for slower reading, more complicated resource decisions and frequent deaths. The transition is strongest for players who enjoyed the feeling of discovering a hostile ocean and want that feeling turned into a full RPG.

Choose The Sinking City Remastered for a different kind of Lovecraft horror

Pick The Sinking City Remastered if you want to investigate why a place is cursed rather than collect evidence through fishing and quests. It replaces DREDGE’s compact boat-management loop with case structure, combat, traversal and mental-health mechanics. Expect a more direct, violent and investigative experience.

Stay with DREDGE-like priorities if the boat is the point

If what you loved was arranging cargo, planning a route, finding new species and deciding whether to risk the night, neither alternative is a substitute. Sunless Sea is the nearest in maritime survival mood, but not in fishing mechanics. The Sinking City Remastered shares the Lovecraftian setting more explicitly, but not the core activity.

Difficulty, pacing and time commitment

Preference DREDGE Sunless Sea The Sinking City Remastered
You want a low-friction starting point Strong fit; the fishing loop is easy to understand and expands gradually Weak fit; systems and failure require patience Moderate fit; investigation is readable, but combat and open-world navigation add demands
You enjoy repeated failure as learning Some risk, but generally the gentlest option Strongest fit; frequent death is part of its stated identity Moderate; mistakes matter, but the structure is case and action oriented
You prefer reading to action Light-to-moderate narrative reading Strongest fit; more than 350,000 words are cited Moderate; investigation and dialogue support an action-adventure framework
You want direct combat Not the defining focus Real-time ship combat Strong fit; on-foot combat is integral

These are design differences, not quality rankings. The “best” choice depends on whether you want a fishing routine, a survival narrative or a detective campaign.

Platform and edition considerations

DREDGE

DREDGE launched on 30 March 2023 for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, according to Black Salt Games and Team17. That is the broadest documented console coverage in this comparison. Store availability can vary by region, and a platform listing may distinguish a base game from an edition that includes additional content.

Sunless Sea

The cited listing covers Windows, macOS and Linux. Check the current storefront and operating-system requirements before purchase, particularly if you are using a newer system or a handheld PC.

The Sinking City Remastered

The cited listing is for Windows. Confirm that you are selecting the remastered edition and review the current hardware requirements, since a remaster can differ from the original release’s technical profile.

Buying a physical copy of DREDGE

Official sources confirm a Nintendo Switch release and the existence of physical versions. If you are looking specifically for a DREDGE Nintendo Switch game or a DREDGE physical edition, verify the current retailer listing, region, stock status and price at the time you order. A product page can change after publication, and the availability of a physical edition does not guarantee that every regional cartridge includes identical packaging or content. Search for the exact edition rather than assuming a digital-store listing describes the boxed release.

A practical decision guide

  1. Start with your preferred activity. Choose DREDGE for fishing and boat management, Sunless Sea for navigation and written survival RPG systems, or The Sinking City Remastered for investigation and combat.
  2. Set your tolerance for punishment. If frequent death and resource pressure sound appealing, Sunless Sea is the clearest fit. If you want a smoother introduction, DREDGE is safer.
  3. Decide how explicit you want the horror to be. DREDGE builds dread through contrast and escalation; Sunless Sea sustains Gothic despair; The Sinking City Remastered presents Lovecraftian horror directly through cases, violence and psychological effects.
  4. Choose your narrative format. Environmental discovery favors DREDGE, extensive prose favors Sunless Sea, and clue-based case solving favors The Sinking City Remastered.
  5. Check your platform before committing. DREDGE has the broadest documented console range, Sunless Sea’s cited listing is computer-only, and The Sinking City Remastered’s cited listing is Windows-only.

Final recommendation by player type

  • New to Lovecraftian games: DREDGE. Its recognizable fishing routine provides a clear entry point before the horror intensifies.
  • Want the best fishing: DREDGE. No other game here makes fishing the central progression system.
  • Want the hardest sea journey: Sunless Sea. Crew, sanity, supplies, combat and frequent death create the most demanding voyage.
  • Want the most writing: Sunless Sea. Its cited 350,000-plus words make it the obvious prose-heavy choice.
  • Want a detective story in a Lovecraftian city: The Sinking City Remastered. Cases, multiple solutions, combat, boat travel and diving define it.
  • Want a console-friendly boat horror game: DREDGE, subject to regional store availability.

DREDGE is the recommendation for most players asking this exact comparison because it delivers the clearest fishing-first loop with an approachable horror curve. Sunless Sea is the superior alternative when depth means prose, survival systems and consequences. The Sinking City Remastered is the right purchase when “Lovecraftian” means investigation, combat and psychological horror rather than fishing.
