To complete Dressmaker’s Burlap Challenge, finish the first three commissions, unlock off-the-rack construction, and create three different off-the-rack dresses. Every fabric piece that belongs to the garment itself must be Burlap; accessories may use other materials. The three early commissions unlock the feature but do not count toward the challenge total. The game checks the finished requirements when you deliver each dress, so inspect every live bar before submission.
What the Burlap Challenge actually requires
The challenge combines a progression gate with a production target. You are not being asked to make three arbitrary Burlap garments in the normal commission flow. You must use the off-the-rack system, and the game must recognize the creations as three separate designs.

The progression gate
Complete the first three commissions required by your current progression. Those commissions are prerequisites for the off-the-rack feature, not part of the three-dress count. A player wiki describes the unlock point more specifically: off-the-rack dresses become available once Fierce Funeral is over, whether that dress succeeds or fails. Names or ordering can differ between builds, so the construction option visible in your current game is the final authority.
The three-dress count
Start three separate off-the-rack dresses and make them different enough for the game to record three unique designs. Because the challenge fixes the garment fabric, changing the fabric is not how you create variety. Use different silhouettes, bodice or skirt pieces, sleeve and collar choices, trim arrangements, or accessory sets. Before leaving a design, confirm that it is a separate dress rather than an edit to a previous one.

The Burlap rule
Every garment fabric piece must be Burlap. That includes pieces such as a bodice, skirt, sleeve, collar, lining, or other cloth component that the pattern treats as part of the dress. Accessories are permitted and can be made from other materials, but replacing even one required garment piece with another fabric can invalidate a Burlap-only build.
Unlock off-the-rack construction safely
- Finish the required early commissions. Follow the progression currently shown in your save rather than relying on an older guide’s mission names.
- Check the dress-construction menu. Off-the-rack must be selectable before you begin the challenge dresses. If the option is missing, another commission or progression event is still outstanding.
- Confirm the unlock after Fierce Funeral. The player-wiki wording says the feature unlocks after that event regardless of pass or fail. If your build labels the event differently, use the menu state and the current objective text.
- Create three new off-the-rack projects. Keep each project separate and alter the design components so the game can distinguish them.
Burlap’s properties and their scoring effect
Burlap is available from the start and has no gold cost per metre. Its extracted game-data tags are Brown, Uncomfortable +50, and Patterned +10. The same data indicates that Burlap reduces 16 of the game’s 22 tracked style tags. Those figures come from DressmakerCompanion’s extracted data, game-data build 25482629 and public build 410, and can move after a patch.

Think of Burlap as a constraint, not an automatic high score. Its strong Uncomfortable contribution can carry a brief, while the broad reductions make it a poor fit for requirements built around polished or romantic styles. Since the values are extracted rather than published as a permanent developer specification, compare them with the tags displayed in your current build.

The challenge and ordinary commissions can evaluate several independent categories. Passing one does not compensate for failing another.
Style bars
Style requirements are tested against the completed design’s tag totals. A line such as “at least 40 Workwear” passes at 40 or higher. Burlap’s Uncomfortable and Patterned values can help those specific bars, but its reductions to other tags may require a carefully chosen pattern and accessories.

At-least and at-most conditions
Directional wording matters. “At least” means your result must meet or exceed the displayed threshold. “At most” means it must be at or below the threshold; exceeding an upper limit fails even if the rest of the dress is strong. Read the operator beside every requirement instead of treating all numbers as minimums.
Fabric-share requirements
When a brief specifies a percentage of a fabric, the game measures the area cut for each fabric. A tiny trim or lining may not satisfy a large share requirement, and a visually dominant-looking piece can still fall short if its cut area is small. For a Burlap challenge dress, assigning Burlap to every garment section is the safest way to avoid an accidental share failure.

Distinct-colour objectives count colour groups, not the number of pieces. Adding several pieces of the same colour does not create several colours. If a brief asks for three different colours, select three actual colour groups and verify that the accessories or garment pieces are not merely repeated shades counted as one group.
Accessories, trims, and budget
Some commissions impose minimum or maximum accessory and trim counts, and others set a gold budget. Accessories are allowed in the Burlap Challenge, but they are not free by default. Add them only when they improve a target, sale value, colour count, or required accessory total without pushing the budget over its limit.
Quality is separate from the recipe
The design recipe determines composition and style, while quality is determined by grain, fit, and sewing accuracy. A correct fabric-and-pattern combination can still fail a Quality 70 or Quality 80 requirement if the construction is poor. No recipe can guarantee the final quality number.

A reliable build procedure
- Read the live brief first. Record every style threshold, fabric percentage, colour count, accessory or trim limit, budget, and quality requirement. The Burlap-only challenge rule does not override the separate conditions on an ordinary commission.
- Choose a distinct silhouette for the first dress. Select the pattern pieces before cutting, then assign Burlap to every garment fabric slot.
- Check the material map. Inspect bodice, skirt, sleeve, collar, lining, and any other cloth component individually. Do not assume that selecting Burlap once fills every slot.
- Add only purposeful accessories. Use them to satisfy a stated count or support a needed style or colour. Leave them out when they create an unnecessary cost or an unwanted tag.
- Repeat with two visibly different designs. Change the component combination or accessory arrangement enough for the game to register unique dresses, while retaining Burlap in all garment fabric slots.
- Cut on grain. Grain alignment contributes to quality and should be handled before sewing.
- Maintain fit. Follow the fitting controls carefully; a design that meets every style bar can still miss its quality threshold.
- Sew seams accurately. Construction precision is the third quality input.
- Review before delivery. Confirm each requirement bar and the displayed quality result. Requirements are checked on delivery, not merely when the Finish Dress button becomes available.
Validated examples that show how scoring works
These examples illustrate the scoring model rather than replace the live brief. They are useful because they separate a pure Burlap approach from a mixed-material design.

A validated Not Haughty recipe uses an Apron Bodice, Empire Princess Skirt, No Sleeves, and Widow’s Peak Collar, with Burlap at 100 percent. Its estimated material cost is 0. The recorded results are:

The Uncomfortable result is attributed to Burlap’s +50 contribution plus pattern contributions. The design clears the listed style bars, but the maker must still reach Quality 70 through grain, fit, and sewing.
Mixed-material example: Daring Heist
A validated Daring Heist recipe uses Burlap at 75 percent, Strawberry Sequins at 20 percent, Violet Sequins at 5 percent, and seven Black Silk Square Bows. Its estimated material cost is 26. The recorded results are:

This build demonstrates why the live brief matters. Burlap remains the majority fabric by area, while sequins and bows supply the glamour, playful, sequin-share, and colour requirements. It also shows that meeting composition and style thresholds does not remove the separate Quality 80 test.

Common failure modes and fixes
The game does not count a dress
Usually the project was made before off-the-rack unlocked, was edited instead of started as a separate dress, or was too similar for the game to register as a new design. Return to the off-the-rack menu, create a fresh project, and change multiple construction choices rather than only renaming it.
A garment is rejected despite looking Burlap
Inspect every fabric slot. A sleeve, collar, lining, or trim classified as garment cloth may still contain another material. Visual appearance is not a substitute for the material assignment shown in the build screen.
A percentage requirement fails
Check cut area, not the number of pieces. Increase the specified fabric’s area in the pattern or replace small sections that do not contribute enough square measure.
A colour requirement fails
Count colour groups in the requirement panel. Multiple black or brown pieces remain one colour group; add a genuinely different group if the brief requires more.

Look for an independent accessory, trim, budget, fabric-share, or quality line. Then verify the dress after delivery. A design can pass its visible style bars and still fail another category.

The quality number is too low
Rebuild or remake the dress with careful grain alignment, accurate fitting, and cleaner seam work. Changing the recipe alone does not solve a construction-quality failure.
Version and source limitations
The available figures come from unofficial player guides and extracted game-data references, not an official developer challenge specification. The player wiki identifies itself as unofficial and unaffiliated with Cozy Lives or Free Lives. DressmakerCompanion lists game-data build 25482629 and public build 410 for its Burlap page and warns that patches can move values. No official developer quote or official challenge specification is established here.
For that reason, use the current in-game brief, unlock state, and score bars over an older guide. If a mission name, tag value, threshold, or unlock timing differs, treat the live game as authoritative and apply the same checks: three unique off-the-rack designs, Burlap in every garment fabric slot, and a separate review of style, composition, budget, accessories, and quality.
What you do not need in the real world
Buying burlap cloth, pins, scissors, or a sewing machine cannot advance a Dressmaker save. Those are real-world analogues only; completion depends entirely on the in-game construction and delivery checks.
