Dressmaker commission vs non-commission dresses: rewards, costs, and workload

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a commission when you need reliable money or progression; choose a non-commission, off-the-rack dress when you want complete design control or need to turn spare materials into coin. A commission pays twice—once when accepted and again when the finished dress is handed over—while an off-the-rack dress pays only when it sells. Commissions also drive story, reputation, and unlock progress, but they impose a customer brief and fitting work. Off-the-rack work removes the client measurement step, yet you buy materials before knowing the sale offer and receive less progression value.

Commission and non-commission dresses at a glance

Factor Commission Non-commission (off the rack)
Payment timing Two payments: an advance when you accept the job and a reward when you hand over the completed dress. One payment when the finished dress is sold.
Design control Limited by the customer’s brief and its required fit, style, quality, or other conditions. Self-directed; there is no customer brief.
Material risk The advance helps fund fabric and trims before construction begins. You purchase fabric and trims before the sale amount is known.
Construction steps Design, source materials, cut, sew, accessorize, finish, measure or fit, then deliver. Design, source materials, cut, sew, accessorize, finish, then sell; the client-measurement step is removed.
Progression Supports story progress, reputation, and unlocks as well as coin. Primarily generates coin and can contribute reputation, but does not provide the same story and unlock value.
Best use Predictable funding, clear objectives, and advancement. Experimentation, personal designs, spare materials, or downtime between clients.

The game does not publish an official price equation or a definitive unlock table. Treat any sale-price thresholds or multiplier claims as community observations rather than guaranteed rules.

How commission payments work

A commission has two cash-flow events. Accepting the commission grants coin up front, explicitly intended to cover the fabric and other supplies. Handing the completed dress to the customer grants a second payment as the work reward. That timing makes commissions the dependable option when your wallet is low: you are not financing the entire garment from previous sales.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The advance is not a bonus for skipping work. You still have to satisfy the brief, complete the garment, and deliver it. If the dress does not meet the requested conditions, the client-oriented objective can fail or provide less value than a correctly completed commission. Read the brief before buying anything so the first payment is spent on a design you can actually deliver.

What the brief changes

The brief supplies the target for the job. It can constrain fit, style, quality, or other requested characteristics, so your creative decisions must serve those requirements. A visually striking design that ignores the brief is a poor commission even if its construction is technically sound. In practice, the brief turns each job into a checklist: identify every required property, plan the silhouette and materials around it, and verify the finished dress before hand-in.

Why the second payment matters

The hand-over payment is the reward for completing the requested work, not a resale offer that you must gamble on. Because you know a commission has an advance and a completion payment, its minimum cash-flow shape is documented even when the exact amount varies by job. This predictability is valuable for buying materials, funding the next commission, and avoiding a situation in which an expensive experiment consumes your entire balance.

How an off-the-rack dress is made and sold

Non-commission work starts with no customer request. You own the concept, choose the materials, and decide when the garment is good enough to put up for sale. The documented sequence is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Design in the sketchbook. Select the silhouette and details you want to test; there is no brief to satisfy.
  2. Buy fabric and trims. Pay for the required materials before you know the eventual sale offer.
  3. Cut the pattern. Accurate cutting, including cutting on the grain, is associated with better quality in community testing.
  4. Assemble and sew on the mannequin. Complete the garment’s construction and seams.
  5. Add accessories. Trims and accessories are part of the build and may affect the eventual value.
  6. Finish the dress. Complete the finishing work, then inspect the result.
  7. Sell it. The sale is the single coin payment for the garment.

Measurement is the major step removed from this route. You do not need to fit a named client, but every other construction stage remains. Off-the-rack therefore saves client-facing time rather than eliminating dressmaking work.

When this route is useful

  • Testing a silhouette or color combination without committing a commission to it.
  • Using leftover fabric, trims, or accessories that would otherwise sit unused.
  • Making a design that reflects your own taste rather than a customer’s request.
  • Continuing to sew when no appealing commission is available.

The sale-offer check

Before committing valuable materials, compare the displayed sale amount with what you will spend on fabric and trims. The game exposes the sale only after you have chosen to make the garment, so the risk is yours. A high-quality, prestigious dress can sell well, but there is no developer-published formula that lets you calculate the result with certainty. If the displayed amount does not cover your material outlay, stop treating that design as an income strategy; reserve it for experimentation or wait for a commission.

What determines a dress’s sale value?

Community testing identifies four apparent drivers of an off-the-rack sale price: material, labour, quality, and prestige. The developers have not published the calculation, so these are useful signals rather than guaranteed thresholds.

Observed factor What players report How to use it
Material The fabric, trims, and other supplies used in the garment affect the offer. Track the purchase cost and avoid assuming expensive materials will automatically return a profit.
Labour Preliminary testing suggests a relationship with seams and accessory additions. Treat the observation as directional; no confirmed labour formula exists.
Quality Community reports describe a quality multiplier that can reach 150%. Quality is linked to cutting on the grain and sewing at 100%. Follow the best construction technique available, but do not treat 150% as a guaranteed payout.
Prestige Community reports describe a prestige multiplier that can also reach 150%, linked to rank. Higher rank may improve value, but the authoritative thresholds are not published.

The two “up to 150%” figures are community-derived descriptions of observed multipliers, not official promises. They should inform comparisons between two designs, not justify spending money you cannot afford to lose. Likewise, the labour observation is preliminary: more seams or accessories may correlate with a different offer, but the exact contribution has not been established.

Workload: what you actually do in each route

Commission workload

Commissions add client-oriented work to the normal design-and-construction loop. You must parse the brief, plan around its constraints, check measurements or fit, and verify that the finished garment satisfies the requested properties before hand-over. This extra checking is the price of the commission’s predictable payment and progression value.

The brief can make a simple-looking dress demanding if it requires a particular fit or quality level. Conversely, a more elaborate design may be manageable when it aligns naturally with the requested style. Judge the job by its requirements, not only by the number of decorative elements.

Off-the-rack workload

Off-the-rack removes customer measurement and fitting, but it retains design, purchasing, cutting, assembly, sewing, accessories, finishing, and selling. It is faster only when the absent fitting work was the bottleneck. A detailed self-directed dress can still require as much construction time as a commission.

What the choice means for your play session

Use commissions for structured sessions: the brief tells you what to make and the two-payment sequence gives the work a clear economic endpoint. Use off-the-rack when you want an open-ended creative session and are comfortable deciding the design, materials, and stopping point yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cash flow, costs, and risk

Why commissions are safer for a small balance

The commission advance reduces the amount of personal coin tied up in materials. You still need to choose supplies sensibly, but the first payment arrives before cutting and sewing. The completion payment then replenishes your funds after delivery. This two-stage structure makes commissions the reliable way to finance continued progress.

Why off-the-rack work can lose money

With an off-the-rack dress, the purchase happens before the sale offer is known. Your exposure is therefore the full material cost plus the time spent constructing the garment. If the eventual offer is low, the loss is not merely theoretical: those materials cannot be recovered through a second commission payment. Keep a reserve for active commissions and buy experimental supplies only when the downside is acceptable.

A practical pre-build calculation

  1. Record the total price of every fabric, trim, and accessory you plan to use.
  2. Compare that total with the displayed sale amount once the game provides it.
  3. Subtract material cost from the offer to see the coin remaining before considering your time.
  4. Proceed when the result supports your goal—profit, experimentation, or material clearing—and cancel or redesign when it does not.

This is a decision aid, not a hidden-price formula. It cannot predict how quality, prestige, labour, or later game changes will affect the offer.

Story, reputation, and unlock value

Commissions are tied to the game’s progression loop. Completing them supports story progress, reputation, and unlocks in addition to coin. That makes a commission worthwhile even when an off-the-rack design might appear capable of a similar single-sale amount. If your immediate objective is to open new content or advance a narrative task, prioritize the available commission that you can complete correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Off-the-rack dresses are primarily a self-directed sale. They can provide coin and may contribute reputation, but they do not replace the commission’s customer-driven progression value. Choose them to fill downtime or pursue a design goal, not as a universal substitute for story work.

No authoritative source establishes a fixed number of dresses required for an unlock. Community reports sometimes suggest approximate counts, but those reports should not be presented as a guaranteed table. Plan around the progression signals the game actually displays rather than a remembered threshold.

Creative freedom versus brief compliance

What commissions let you explore

A brief does not remove all creativity. You can still choose the interpretation, silhouette details, material combination, and accessories that satisfy the customer’s request. The constraint is that those choices must remain inside the requested boundaries. This is the better mode for practicing how to translate a design specification into a finished garment.

What off-the-rack unlocks

Without a client, you can change direction at any point: try an unusual silhouette, build around a leftover trim, or repeat a design with different materials. There is no requirement to justify the result to a customer. That freedom is the main reward, even when the coin return is uncertain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decision guide: which should you make?

Your situation Better choice Reason
You need coin to buy materials for the next job. Commission The advance arrives before construction and a second payment follows hand-over.
You are trying to advance story, reputation, or unlocks. Commission Customer work is connected to the progression loop.
You have an active commission with requirements you can meet. Commission The objective and reward are known more clearly than an experimental sale.
You want to design without a brief. Off the rack You control the concept, materials, and finish.
You have spare materials and no urgent commission. Off the rack You can convert supplies into a sale without waiting for a client.
You want to test a silhouette. Off the rack An experiment does not risk failing a customer’s requirements.
Your balance cannot absorb an uncertain material purchase. Commission Off-the-rack work exposes you to the sale amount only after spending on supplies.

Ways to avoid common mistakes

  • Do not confuse the advance with profit. A commission still requires construction and a successful hand-over before the full reward is earned.
  • Do not skip the brief. Check every requested property before buying materials or beginning construction.
  • Do not assume a costly off-the-rack dress will sell for more. Material price is only one reported input, and the formula is unpublished.
  • Do not count measurement as the entire off-the-rack saving. Cutting, sewing, accessories, finishing, and selling remain.
  • Do not treat community multipliers as guarantees. The reported 150% quality and prestige ceilings and the labour observations are not developer-confirmed rules.
  • Do not spend your commission reserve on experiments. Keep enough coin to fulfill active customer work before using off-the-rack designs to test ideas.

Real-world dressmaking costs are a different calculation

Real-world pricing helps explain why commissions feel more labour-intensive, but these figures are not prices or mechanics from Dressmaker. Costumary’s Lila Torres advises: “If that number feels too high to quote to the client, the right response is to evaluate whether you’re the right maker for this commission, not to lower your rate below sustainable levels.”

Her illustrative hourly bands are $15–25 for hobby sewists, $30–50 for experienced sewists, $50–100 for professional couture or bridal work, and $75–150 for specialty skills. A maker also has overhead: machine maintenance, needles, pressing supplies, patterns, and electricity. Those costs explain why a real commission cannot be priced from fabric alone.

Hidden labour can be substantial. A fitting appointment may take 30–90 minutes; client communication may add 1–3 hours; custom pattern drafting can take 2–10 hours; and muslin development adds both time and fabric. Rush work may justify a 20–50% premium. A common payment arrangement is a 50% deposit before work and a 50% balance at completion, which resembles the game’s two-stage commission cash flow but should not be treated as evidence that the game uses real-world rates.

Bottom line for your next dress

Make the commission when money, story progress, reputation, or unlocks matter most. Its brief and fitting requirements add workload, but the advance plus hand-over reward makes the result predictable. Make an off-the-rack dress when creative ownership, spare-material use, or silhouette testing is the goal—and check the displayed sale against your material cost before committing. Commissions are the dependable progression route; non-commission dresses are the flexible, higher-risk outlet for experimentation.
