Fuse Games co-founder Matt Webster identified Formula 1’s Drive to Survive as an early creative touch point for Star Wars: Galactic Racer. The result is an original Star Wars racing game with rivalries, alliances and paddock-style drama, not a Netflix television series or a licensed adaptation of the documentary.

The confusion comes from the phrase “Drive to Survive inspired.” That wording describes a creative reference for the game’s presentation and story. It does not mean Netflix produced a Star Wars racing show, that the game adapts Formula 1, or that the two properties share a licensing arrangement.

What Drive to Survive contributed
Webster, a Fuse Games co-founder, described the documentary as one of the team’s early touch points:
“One of our early touch points was Formula One’s Drive to Survive. The interest, excitement, intrigue and drama can be as exciting off the track as it is on the track.”
That statement points to a specific kind of influence. The game treats a race as only part of the competition. Driving lines, vehicle handling, takedowns and hazards are paired with conversations, rivalries, alliances and scenes around the league’s paddock. Personalities and political maneuvering help establish why a race matters before the starting signal, while the result changes relationships and future choices.
Rank #2
- Star Wars Episode I Racer: Choose from 25 playable racers including: Anakin Skywalker, Sebulba, and Ratts Tyerell
- Star Wars Episode I Racer: Race tracks spanning 8 unique worlds including: Tatooine, Baroonda, and Malastare
- Star Wars Republic Commando: Boss, Fixer, Scorch, and Sev, better known as Delta Squad, are back! Relive the legendary campaign.
- Star Wars Republic Commando: Battle a variety of highly intelligent and deadly enemies-from brutal Trandoshan mercenaries to the flying insectoid warriors of Geonosis.
In other words, the documentary’s influence is about access to the people and tensions surrounding elite competition. Galactic Racer uses that idea inside a Star Wars adventure; it does not recreate Formula 1 teams, drivers or events.
Galactic Racer’s story and principal characters
Shade, the playable racer
The campaign follows Shade, a lone racer who becomes involved with the Outer Rim league. Shade is the playable protagonist and the viewpoint through which players encounter the league’s competitors, organizers and competing interests.
Darius Pax, the league organizer
Darius Pax organizes the Galactic League. His role gives the campaign a figure who can assemble the races and connect the competitors’ personal stakes to the wider competition.

- The following games are included in the cartridge: STAR WARS Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (3.6 GB)
- STAR WARS Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (1.1 GB)
- STAR WARS Episode I Racer (254 MB)
- STAR WARS Republic Commando (2.5 GB)
- STAR WARS: The Force Unleashed (3.4 GB)
Kestar Bool, the champion rival
Kestar Bool is the reigning champion and the campaign’s principal rival. Bool’s power and schemes drive the central conflict, turning the league into more than a sequence of disconnected races.
The story therefore has two linked tracks: what happens on the course and what Shade learns or decides between events. That structure is the clearest expression of the Drive to Survive-style interest in personalities and off-track pressure, translated into an interactive Star Wars setting.
How the campaign works
Galactic Racer combines branching event choices with runs-based progression. Instead of moving through one completely fixed ladder, players choose paths through a tour and decide which events or upgrades best fit the current vehicle and strategy.
- Choose an event path. The campaign presents branching opportunities, so selecting one race or encounter can change the next available options.
- Race and manage the vehicle. Driving skill, hazards, takedowns and the handling profile of the chosen repulsorcraft determine how successfully a run develops.
- Select upgrades. Upgrades shape the vehicle and the approach to later events in that tour.
- Deal with failure. A failed tour sends the player back to rebuild rather than simply continuing from the same point.
- Carry forward lasting unlocks. Some unlocks persist between runs, giving repeated attempts a longer-term progression even when an individual tour ends.
This is a hybrid of branching campaign design and roguelike-style resets: a failed run costs progress within that tour, but it is not a total loss because certain unlocks remain available. The result should make route planning and adaptation as important as winning a single race.

The game includes several recognizable Star Wars racing classes. They are not cosmetic swaps; each has distinct handling characteristics and tactical advantages.

Because routes, hazards and upgrades interact with vehicle behavior, the best choice can depend on the event rather than on a single universally superior class.

Lucasfilm Games executive producer Craig Derrick described the project’s goal as a cinematic, skill-driven and unmistakably Star Wars racing experience. That ambition explains why Galactic Racer combines spectacle and vehicle mastery with character scenes instead of treating its story as a thin wrapper around time trials.
What the comparison does—and does not—tell you
The comparison to Drive to Survive is useful if you want to know whether the game has drama away from the starting grid. It does: rival conversations, alliances and league politics are part of the documented design. It is not useful as evidence that the game is a documentary, a Netflix production or a Formula 1 simulation.
Galactic Racer remains an original Star Wars property with its own setting, cast and fictional vehicles. Its documented connection to the Formula 1 series is a creative touch point for showing how competition can generate intrigue off the track as well as excitement during a race.
