“This application failed to start because drivelocker.dll was not found.” The drivelocker.dll error usually means an old Nero or NeroVision installation has lost, damaged, or mismatched its DriveLocker component.
Which fix applies to you

- The error appears when Nero, NeroVision, or Nero Burning ROM starts: repair or reinstall the exact Nero product first.
- The problem began after antivirus activity: check Windows Security quarantine before reinstalling anything.
- The file exists, but Windows says it is corrupted, has an invalid entry point, or is not designed to run on Windows: suspect the wrong Nero version or a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch.
- Nero’s installer fails while patching or registering DriveLocker: use a complete installer for the same Nero release instead of copying a DLL manually.
- The error names another file such as
MSVCP*.dllorVCRUNTIME*.dll: install the matching Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable architecture, not a random copy ofdrivelocker.dll. - Windows has broader corruption symptoms: run DISM followed by SFC as a secondary repair. These commands do not normally recreate a third-party Nero DLL.
- The problem affects optical-drive access as well as Nero: check the drive and its driver in Device Manager, but do not mistake a hardware-driver problem for the missing DLL itself.
What drivelocker.dll is
drivelocker.dll is the DriveLocker component of older Ahead Software AG applications. Ahead Software AG was associated with Nero-era optical-disc software, and historical NeroVision and Nero module records identify DriveLocker as part of that software family.

C:WindowsSysWOW64
A known historical installation path is:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesAheadLibDriveLocker.dll
Some older Nero programs were 32-bit applications. Therefore, a 32-bit Nero installation can need a 32-bit DriveLocker file even when it runs on 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Historical records show several DriveLocker versions rather than one universal release. That matters because replacing a file from a different Nero generation can produce a new loader error, an entry-point error, or a “not designed to run on Windows” message.
DriveLocker appears to help Nero with optical-drive or volume operations. It is not a general-purpose Windows DLL, so repairing the parent Nero installation is safer than trying to repair the filename in isolation.
Fix 1: repair or reinstall the matching Nero product
This is the most likely solution. Windows is reporting the missing file because a Nero executable still expects it, but the shared Ahead library was removed, quarantined, or replaced.
Identify the program that needs the file
- Note the application name in the error window.
- Check whether the error appears when opening Nero, NeroVision, Nero Burning ROM, or an old shortcut.
- Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, check the Target field.
- Write down the product name and installation folder.
- If the shortcut points to an old program that is no longer installed, remove the shortcut and check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for the related Nero entry.
Do not assume every drivelocker.dll error comes from the same Nero application. Several Nero-era components used related Ahead libraries.
Uninstall the damaged Nero installation
Before removing the program, save Nero projects, disc images, exported videos, and any product key or account information you still need.
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Nero, NeroVision, or the specific Ahead product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the installer’s removal instructions.
- Restart Windows.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the Nero product.
- Choose Uninstall and restart when prompted.
You can also open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the Nero entry, and choose Uninstall.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If the uninstaller is missing or fails, do not immediately delete random files from C:Program FilesCommon FilesAhead. A partial removal can leave shared components and installer records in an inconsistent state. Use Nero’s own support instructions for removing that product, then restart before reinstalling.
Reinstall from a legitimate source
Use one of these sources:
- The original Nero installation disc or downloaded installer you own
- Your Nero account or Nero Start, if the product was registered there
- Nero’s official installer-download or previous-version pages
- An organization’s legitimate software archive, if the license and installer came from that organization
Choose the same product and release when possible. A newer Nero installer is not guaranteed to contain the exact legacy DriveLocker build required by an older NeroVision or Nero 6/7 program.
After downloading or inserting the installer:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Properties.
- If a Digital Signatures tab is present, review the signer.
- Start the installer.
- Allow it to complete all shared-component and prerequisite steps.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the original Nero program.
If the application opens without the error, the repair worked. You can also check for the restored file under the Nero installation or shared Ahead folder. Do not move that file after installation.

Fix 2: check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine an old application component. That does not prove the file was safe, so verify its origin before restoring anything.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry naming
drivelocker.dll, Nero, Ahead, or the folder where Nero was installed. - Expand the detection and read the path, detection name, and action.
- Restore the file only if it came from your genuine Nero installer, original media, or a known-good backup.
- Reinstall or update Nero afterward.
- Run Scan options > Full scan.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to accept an unknown DLL download. If the file appeared in an unusual folder, has an unexpected publisher, or arrived with a suspicious executable, leave it quarantined and scan the system.
A restored file may still be the wrong version. If Nero continues to fail, uninstall and reinstall the matching product instead of repeatedly restoring the same quarantine item.
Fix 3: check the 32-bit and 64-bit match
A 64-bit version of Windows can run old 32-bit Nero software, but the application still expects its compatible 32-bit dependencies. Windows does not make every DLL interchangeable just because both files have the same name.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check the program architecture by examining its installation path:
- Older 32-bit applications commonly appear under
C:Program Files (x86). - 64-bit applications commonly appear under
C:Program Files.
This folder location is a useful clue, not absolute proof. The installer and product documentation are more reliable.
Do not copy a 32-bit drivelocker.dll into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or beside an unrelated program. On 64-bit Windows, those folders have specific roles, and forcing an application DLL into them can create search-order conflicts.
The safest architecture fix is:
- Uninstall the affected Nero product.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the matching Nero build.
- Use the product’s own installer to place its 32-bit files in the correct directory.
- Test Nero again.
If the message changes from “not found” to “entry point not found,” that often indicates that Windows found a DLL but it does not match the executable that loaded it. Remove the mismatched copy and reinstall the correct Nero release.
Fix 4: check for a missing Microsoft runtime dependency
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET simply because drivelocker.dll is missing. There is no evidence that DriveLocker itself is one of those Microsoft components.

Read the complete error carefully. If it specifically names a file such as:
MSVCP*.dll
VCRUNTIME*.dll
install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s official documentation. Select the x86 package for a 32-bit Nero program, even when Windows is 64-bit. An x64 package does not automatically satisfy an x86 application.
Microsoft documents the supported Visual C++ packages here: Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAfter installing the required runtime:
- Restart Windows.
- Launch Nero again.
- If
drivelocker.dllis still missing, return to the Nero repair procedure. The runtime installation does not recreate a deleted Ahead file.
If an old Nero installer explicitly requests a particular prerequisite, use the version and architecture required by that installer. Avoid collecting individual runtime DLLs from unofficial download pages.
Fix 5: repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
drivelocker.dll is not a protected Windows system file. DISM and SFC will normally not restore it from Windows component storage.
Use these commands when Windows also has symptoms such as broken built-in apps, failed updates, unexplained system-file errors, or general instability.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Nero.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component source used by SFC. The official instructions are available in Microsoft’s System File Checker guide.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Nero again, but do not expect it to recreate DriveLocker.dll. If both commands complete successfully and the Nero error remains, return to the product reinstall steps.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting feel like guesswork. Outbyte PC Repair can perform a free scan that shows what it finds; repair features are handled by the full version, and reinstalling the affected Nero product remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.
Fix 6: check the optical drive and its driver
A drive-driver problem does not normally create drivelocker.dll, but it can appear at the same time as Nero failures. Check it only if Nero also cannot detect, read, or write to the optical drive.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- Double-click the optical drive.
- Read the Device status message on the General tab.
- Select the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver update is installed.
If the device has a warning icon:
- Right-click the drive in Device Manager.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Let Windows detect the hardware again.
Do not uninstall the device merely because Nero reports drivelocker.dll missing. The DLL and the hardware driver are separate layers.

Please verify your device type before purchasing
Finding the correct driver manually can mean checking the computer or drive manufacturer, matching hardware IDs, and avoiding incompatible packages. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan to identify driver issues; driver installation features are handled by the full version, while reinstalling Nero remains the definitive fix for drivelocker.dll.
Fix 7: use System Restore after a known software change
System Restore is reasonable if the error began immediately after a Nero update, cleanup operation, or other identifiable change and a restore point exists.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore may remove a recent application change, but it is not a replacement for reinstalling Nero. Personal files are not intended to be removed, but application and driver changes can be reversed, so review the affected-program list first.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why downloading drivelocker.dll is usually the wrong fix
A standalone DLL download can fail in several ways:
- It may be from the wrong Nero generation.
- It may be the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- It may be modified, unsigned, or bundled with unwanted software.
- It may restore the filename while leaving Nero’s other files, registry entries, or installer records broken.
- It may create a DLL search-order conflict when copied beside another executable.
- It does not repair a failed Nero patch or an incompatible old application.
Never copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64. Never place it beside an unrelated game or application simply because that makes the error disappear temporarily.
The safe sources are the original Nero media, a legitimate owned-product download, your Nero account, or Nero’s official installer and support resources. Current Nero downloads may not contain the exact legacy component required by every old release, so confirm product compatibility before replacing an obsolete installation.
Should you run regsvr32?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the COM registration entry point required by the command, such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal repair command for runtime or helper DLLs. Historical Nero installers attempted to register DriveLocker in some installations and reported registration failures, but that does not mean manual registration is required.
Only use registration if official documentation for the exact Nero build explicitly instructs you to do so. For a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows, the relevant executable would normally be the 32-bit registration tool:

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:Program FilesCommon FilesAheadLibDriveLocker.dll"
Do not run this command just because the file exists. If it reports that the entry point is missing, the DLL is not a self-registering COM component, and registration is not the solution. Return to Nero repair or reinstall instead.
Windows Features are not a general DLL repair
Turning Windows Features on and off will not normally restore DriveLocker. Do not enable legacy components speculatively.
Use Settings > Optional features > More Windows features only when the complete error or the affected application specifically requires a Windows feature such as .NET Framework 3.5. If an old Nero installer requests that feature, enable it, restart if prompted, and run the Nero installer again.

What to do if reinstalling Nero does not work
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm which executable produces the error.
- Remove obsolete Nero shortcuts that point to deleted programs.
- Check whether antivirus quarantined the original file.
- Obtain a complete installer for the same Nero release.
- Confirm that the installer matches the application’s architecture.
- Check the full error for a separate missing dependency.
- Review Event Viewer:
- Press
Win + X. - Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time Nero failed.
- Test a new Windows user profile if only one account has the problem.
- Scan the computer if the file or its parent executable appears in an unusual location.
- If the old release is incompatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11, remove it and use a supported Nero release or contact Nero support with the exact product version and installer error.
Do not keep mixing files from Nero 6, Nero 7, NeroVision, and newer Nero releases. A matching complete installation is more reliable than assembling individual components.
FAQ
Is drivelocker.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with Ahead Software AG and older Nero software. It should not normally be installed in the Windows system folders.
Which programs use drivelocker.dll?
Historical evidence links it with NeroVision, Nero Burning ROM, Nero 6/7, and related optical-disc components. The exact parent program depends on the installation.
Can I download the file from a DLL website?
That is unsafe and often ineffective. The file may be altered, the wrong architecture, or the wrong version. Use the matching Nero installer or legitimate original media instead.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Copying an application DLL into System32 or SysWOW64 can create conflicts and does not repair the Nero installation.
Will SFC fix drivelocker.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. Use it only when Windows has broader corruption symptoms, and run DISM before SFC.
Do I need Visual C++ Redistributable?
Only if the complete error names a Visual C++ dependency or Nero’s installer requests it. Choose x86 for a 32-bit Nero program.
Is drivelocker.dll malware?
The filename is associated with legitimate historical Nero software, but that does not prove every copy is safe. Check its location, origin, signature, and antivirus result before restoring it.
Why does the error appear after Nero was uninstalled?
A leftover shortcut, startup entry, file association, or Nero component may still be calling the removed program. Remove the obsolete installation cleanly, restart, and reinstall only the product you still need.
What is the final fix when the old Nero version is unavailable?
Do not assemble the program from random DLLs. Contact Nero support, use a legitimate owned-product installer if available, or replace the obsolete application with a supported release after confirming that your projects and hardware remain compatible.
