driverif.dll is an old third-party library identified with CA driverif, not a standard Windows file. If Windows says driverif.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the specific CA application that requested it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The exact parent application is not reliably documented. The safest repair is therefore to identify the program or startup entry calling the file, then restore the complete application from its original installer or legitimate installation media.

What driverif.dll is
Available file records describe the file this way:
| Item | Reported information |
|---|---|
| File name | driverif.dll |
| Internal name | driverif |
| Product label | CA driverif |
| Publisher | Computer Associates International, Inc. |
| File type | User-mode Windows DLL associated with legacy CA software |
| Architecture | Reported primarily as 32-bit Win32, but verify from the original installation |
| Current official standalone download | None identified |
The version, size, hash, and architecture information associated with this file comes from third-party catalogue records rather than a surviving official Computer Associates installer. Treat those values as identification clues, not as an authenticity guarantee.

A hardware kernel driver normally uses a .sys file. This DLL is not established as a Microsoft component, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET file.

Computer Associates later became CA Technologies and was acquired by Broadcom. That history helps explain why locating a current official package specifically named driverif.dll can be difficult.
Error messages you may see
The wording depends on which program loads the file. Common examples include:
- “This application failed to start because driverif.dll was not found.”
- “The file driverif.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: driverif.dll.”
- “Error loading driverif.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because driverif.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Failed to load driverif.dll.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly.”
- “The file is not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The message naming driverif.dll does not always mean that the file itself is absent. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that one of the DLL’s dependencies is missing.

If the error appears when opening a program
Note the application name shown in the error window. Check whether it is:
- An old CA product
- A legacy business or security application
- A program installed from older enterprise media
- An application that was recently removed or partially upgraded
Open Settings with Win+I, select Apps, then Installed apps. Search for the program name and for entries containing CA, Computer Associates, or CA Technologies.
If the error appears at startup:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for an old CA entry or an unfamiliar program.
- Right-click an entry and choose Open file location, where available.
- Record the executable path before disabling anything.
Also check scheduled tasks:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
taskschd.mscand press Enter. - Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Inspect tasks whose actions point to an old CA installation directory.
- Do not delete a task until you have confirmed that it belongs to software you no longer use.
If the error appears only during boot and no window identifies the caller, the startup entry, scheduled task, service, or orphaned shortcut is often the real source.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 1: Repair the original CA application
Repair is the best first fix when the program is still installed and you still need it.
Use Windows app repair
- Press
Win+I. - Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the CA-related application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the original application again.
Not every traditional desktop program exposes a Repair option. If the option is missing, use the application’s own installer or setup program.
Use the original installer
If you have an installation CD, network installer, backup, or approved enterprise software archive:
- Make sure the installer matches the application already installed.
- Close the affected program.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Choose Repair, Modify, or an equivalent maintenance option.
- Complete the setup.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program from its normal shortcut.
If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall the CA application from Settings → Apps → Installed apps, restart, and reinstall it from the original media. Back up application data first if the program stores local databases or configuration files.

A complete reinstall is preferable to downloading driverif.dll separately because the installer restores the correct file, registration information, dependent files, permissions, and application directory.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The application opens without the
driverif.dllmessage. - The executable and its supporting files are present in the same application directory.
- The error does not return after restarting Windows.
- The application’s normal functions work, rather than merely opening its window.
If the error returns immediately after reinstalling, the problem may be a missing dependency, blocked file, incompatible legacy application, or damaged installer package.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may have removed or quarantined an old DLL because legacy files can look suspicious or lack modern signing information.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
driverif.dllor the CA application. - Expand the event and inspect the full file path.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the original CA installation.
- Restore the file only if you are confident it came from trusted installation media and was incorrectly detected.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error. A malicious or incompatible file can use the same name. If the detection is uncertain, leave it quarantined and reinstall the complete application from known-good media instead.

Fix 3: Check the application path and dependencies
A file can exist but still fail to load.
Confirm whether the DLL exists
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Find the affected application under Processes or Details.
- Right-click it and select Open file location, if available.
- Look in that directory for
driverif.dll. - Check the file’s Properties and Digital Signatures tabs, if present.
The file should normally be restored to the application directory or to the location specified by the original installer. Do not move it to a global Windows directory simply because the filename ends in .dll.
Understand the dependency error
If driverif.dll is present but Windows reports that the specified module could not be found, another library may be missing. The missing component could be:
- Another DLL from the same CA application
- A legacy runtime installed with the original program
- A component removed by cleanup software
- A file blocked by permissions or security software
Use the application’s logs, Windows Event Viewer, or a reputable dependency-analysis tool to identify the missing module. Do not assume that replacing the named DLL will solve the problem.
Open Event Viewer by pressing Win+R, entering eventvwr.msc, and pressing Enter. Check Windows Logs → Application for an error at the time the program failed. Look for the application name, faulting module, and complete path.
Fix 4: Handle 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility correctly
The strongest available file identification describes driverif.dll as a 32-bit Win32 library, although catalogue records are inconsistent. The original installer is the authority for the copy you need.
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows can run normally through Windows compatibility layers, but it still needs the correct 32-bit DLL in the application’s loader path. A random file labelled “64-bit” is not a valid substitute.
Do not choose between System32 and SysWOW64 based on the filename alone. Those folders serve different Windows roles, and copying an unverified DLL into either location can create additional problems. Follow the original application’s installer instead.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If the program is very old:
- Right-click its shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Try Run this program in compatibility mode for an older Windows version.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the application genuinely requires it.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Test the program.
Compatibility mode does not recreate a missing DLL. It only helps when the file is present but the old application has trouble running on the current Windows release.
Fix 5: Reinstall an associated device package only when evidence points there
The name driverif.dll can make it look like a graphics, printer, audio, chipset, or other hardware driver component. There is not enough reliable evidence to assign this file to a particular device manufacturer.
If your investigation shows that the error comes from an old CA-associated device package, repair that complete package rather than replacing the DLL:
- Press
Win+X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category connected with the affected software.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider and driver date.
- Select Update Driver and choose Search automatically for drivers, or use the hardware manufacturer’s official support package.
- If the error began immediately after a driver update, select Roll Back Driver, when available.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Do not uninstall a working device merely because driverif.dll has “driver” in its name. The application path and calling executable must connect the error to that device package first.
Hunting through many device models and driver versions manually can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that shows which drivers are outdated; the repair or driver installation is handled by the full version, while the original application installer remains the definitive fix for an app-specific driverif.dll error.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They normally will not recreate a third-party CA DLL, so use them when other Windows components are also failing or when system corruption is suspected.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the affected program. If it reports that it could not repair everything, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. These commands are not a substitute for reinstalling the CA software.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the actual problem is an obsolete application installation. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that identifies reported system issues; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the original CA program remains the definitive solution when that program owns the missing file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Use System Restore if the error started suddenly
System Restore can help when the file disappeared after software removal, a cleanup operation, an update, or a driver change.
- Press
Win+R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point, if offered.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the results.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Restart Windows.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs while normally leaving personal files untouched. It may remove a recent application or update, so review the affected-program list first.

What not to do
Do not download a standalone DLL from a random site
A file with the correct name can still be:
- Malware
- The wrong architecture
- From an unrelated application
- Incompatible with the calling program
- Missing its own dependencies
- Modified or incomplete
Standalone DLL download instructions also commonly tell users to place files in System32 or SysWOW64, which is not a reliable fix for an application-specific library.
Use the original CA application installer, a known-good backup, or an approved organizational software archive instead. No current official standalone Microsoft, CA, or Broadcom download page for driverif.dll has been established.
Do not register it automatically
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that driverif.dll is an ActiveX control or COM server that requires registration.
Running:
regsvr32 driverif.dll
may produce an error saying that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That does not mean Windows needs a different copy, and registration will not repair a missing dependency.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically documents that the particular DLL must be registered.
Do not copy the file into System32
Manual copying is appropriate only when you have a verified copy from the exact original installer or a known-good backup and the application’s documentation specifies the destination. Otherwise, reinstall the complete program.
If you no longer need the CA software
If the affected application is obsolete, removing it is safer than trying to preserve a broken startup reference.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Locate the CA-related application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Check Task Manager → Startup apps for its remaining startup entry.
- Check Task Scheduler for tasks that clearly belong to the removed program.
- Remove only confirmed orphaned references.
Do not delete DLLs from Windows directories to suppress the message. If the error continues after uninstalling the parent application, identify the remaining executable, scheduled task, shortcut, or service that is still trying to load it.

Is driverif.dll part of Windows?
No evidence identifies it as a standard Windows component. Public file records associate it with the third-party label CA driverif and Computer Associates International, Inc.
Is driverif.dll a hardware driver?
The filename alone does not prove that. The available evidence describes a user-mode DLL, not a .sys kernel driver. Identify the calling application before updating hardware drivers.
Which application installed driverif.dll?
The exact parent application or suite is not reliably documented. The reliable way to identify it is to inspect the error, executable path, startup entry, scheduled task, or installed CA software.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as a file-specific fix. Install or repair those packages only when the complete error identifies a dependency belonging to that runtime. None is established as the owner of driverif.dll.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I run regsvr32 driverif.dll?
Usually no. There is no evidence that this file requires COM registration. Repair or reinstall the application that supplied it.
Where should driverif.dll be located?
Prefer the original application directory or the installer-managed location. Do not copy an unverified DLL into System32 or SysWOW64.
What if antivirus quarantined it?
Check Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history. Restore only when you can verify that the file came from trusted original CA software and the detection is a false positive. Otherwise reinstall the application.
Why does the error appear after every restart?
An old startup entry, scheduled task, service, or shortcut may still be launching a partially removed CA program. Inspect those locations and remove the orphaned reference only after confirming its ownership.
