For the clearest store-wide offline promise, choose GOG. Its published terms and quality-assurance rules require single-player games to work without an internet connection or the Galaxy client, and purchased games have downloadable offline backup installers. itch.io is also platform-DRM-free, but each creator controls the files and instructions. Humble can offer a genuine standalone installer for particular games, yet no store-wide DRM-free guarantee is established here.
The practical test is not simply whether a store uses the words “DRM-free.” Check what you receive, whether a launcher or account check is required, and which features still depend on online services.

Quick comparison
| Store | What you can download | Activation and launcher position | Evidence for offline play | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GOG | Offline backup installers from the website | Galaxy is optional for single-player content | Store terms and developer QA require offline single-player access | Multiplayer and other online features; any exception shown on the individual listing |
| itch.io | Files uploaded by the creator | No platform DRM and no alteration of uploaded files | Depends on the downloaded build and the game’s own design | Creator instructions, launcher requirements, account checks and online-only systems |
| Humble Store | Delivery varies; some titles include a standalone installer | Some purchases are keys for another store | Confirmed here for Klei’s Don’t Starve installer | The exact delivery type and requirements on each product page |
This is a policy-and-workflow comparison, not a ranking by catalog size. No independently audited cross-store count of DRM-free games was established, and catalogs, regional options and delivery methods can change.

Digital rights management (DRM) is a technical or contractual control that can require a particular client, activation check, account sign-in or recurring connection before a game starts. A genuinely useful DRM-free purchase gives you an installer or game files that you can retain and launch locally, without that store’s client acting as a gatekeeper.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
That definition still has boundaries. A game can be DRM-free for its single-player campaign while requiring a connection for multiplayer matchmaking. Cloud saves, achievements, leaderboards, timed events, user-generated content and other live services are separate functions. Removing store activation does not turn those services into offline features.
“Offline” also describes a workflow, not permanent immunity from every requirement. A game may include an offline-capable campaign alongside an online-only mode, or its listing may document an exception. Read the product notes before purchasing rather than treating a store badge as a promise about every feature.
GOG: the strongest documented store-wide option
What GOG promises
GOG’s published definition of DRM-free distribution says a game has no DRM, copy-protection or online-connection requirement, except where an online connection is inherent to multiplayer elements. Its terms state that all single-player content must be playable offline unless a particular listing says otherwise.
GOG’s 2022 article, Our commitment to DRM-free gaming, puts the practical rule plainly: “The single-player mode has to be accessible offline.” The same commitment says, “The GOG GALAXY client is and will remain optional for accessing single-player offline mode.” That means Galaxy can provide conveniences such as library management or social functions, but it is not the activation gate for the offline single-player mode covered by the policy.
Offline installers and the website workflow
After buying a game, use the website’s downloads area to obtain its offline backup installer rather than relying only on a client-managed installation. Keep the installer files with any required language packs, patches or redistributable components shown for that product. The installer is the durable asset: it can be copied to external storage and used later on a compatible computer.

GOG’s developer quality-assurance documentation gives developers the corresponding requirement: “all games on GOG have to be playable offline and without the Galaxy client.” This is stronger evidence than a marketing label because it describes the acceptance condition applied to games submitted to the store.
Where the promise stops
Multiplayer servers, matchmaking and other network services remain online dependencies by design. Achievements, cloud saves or social features may also be unavailable without Galaxy or an internet connection even when the campaign launches normally. A listing can specify an exception, so inspect it before assuming every mode is covered.
itch.io: direct files, creator-by-creator responsibility
How its no-DRM policy works
itch.io says it does not impose platform DRM and delivers files exactly as creators uploaded them. Its Creator FAQ answers the common concern directly: “No. itch.io lets users download the games exactly as you uploaded them. No modifications are made to the files you upload.” For an offline buyer, that means the marketplace is not wrapping a creator’s build in a mandatory client activation layer.
Why every listing needs inspection
Because creators control the uploaded package, there is no single itch.io guarantee that every title will start without an account, launcher or network. One developer may provide a conventional standalone executable; another may include a custom launcher, an account check, a separate runtime or an online-only design. The platform’s no-DRM policy does not remove requirements embedded in the game itself.
Before buying, read the creator’s installation notes and comments, identify the operating system and architecture supported, and look for phrases such as “requires internet,” “first launch,” “online account,” “launcher,” or “server.” If the creator supplies multiple builds, download the one that matches your system and note whether the package includes all needed data or expects a separate client.

Testing an itch.io purchase for long-term use
- Download the complete package while signed in, then copy it to a temporary folder outside the store’s download directory.
- Disconnect the computer from the network or block the game temporarily with the operating system firewall.
- Launch the game from the copied files, following the creator’s documented start command if it is not a graphical executable.
- Test the mode you intend to keep, such as a saved single-player campaign, rather than stopping at the title screen.
- Record any runtime, redistributable or permission requirement in a text file stored beside the installer.
This test cannot guarantee future compatibility with a new operating system, but it confirms whether the delivered build currently depends on a sign-in or connection in your setup.

What is established
Humble’s delivery model varies by product. A purchase may provide a direct download, a standalone installer or a key that must be redeemed on another store. The evidence available for DRM-free use is specific rather than store-wide.
Klei’s support article, updated May 22, 2025, instructs buyers of Don’t Starve to open their Humble purchase page and download a platform-specific standalone installer. That is a concrete DRM-free path: the buyer receives an installer rather than being limited to a launcher-managed package.
How to check a Humble product
- Open the purchase page for the exact edition and platform.
- Read the delivery labels and distinguish a downloadable installer from a redemption key.
- Open the developer’s installation instructions, if linked, and note any account, launcher or online requirement.
- Download the installer and test it offline before deleting the purchase-page information or moving the files to archival storage.
Do not generalize from the Don’t Starve example to every Humble listing. The product page is the authoritative check for that purchase, and a key for another store follows that other store’s activation rules.
How to buy a game you can keep and replay offline
1. Start with the exact edition and platform
Open the product page and confirm whether you are buying Windows, macOS, Linux or another edition. Deluxe editions, remasters and bundles can have different installers and different online components. Note the version or edition name in your records so you do not later download a different package by mistake.

- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).

- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
2. Identify the delivery type
Look for one of three outcomes: a standalone installer, a downloadable archive or executable files, or a key that must be activated elsewhere. The first two are the clearest route to local ownership. A key is not an offline installer; it transfers the activation relationship to the service where it is redeemed.
3. Read requirements beyond the DRM label
Check the listing and support notes for first-run activation, online-only modes, multiplayer servers, account checks, launchers, anti-cheat systems and required third-party runtimes. Separate the requirements for the campaign from those for optional services.
4. Download immediately after purchase
For GOG, use the website’s offline backup installers. For itch.io, save the creator-uploaded package and its instructions. For Humble, follow the exact product page and developer directions. Download while the files are available instead of assuming a future client will reconstruct them.
5. Perform an offline launch test
- Install the game on a test machine or a separate user account.
- Disconnect from the internet before the first launch, unless the documented installer itself must be downloaded first.
- Start the intended single-player mode and create a save.
- Exit, relaunch and load that save while still offline.
- Reconnect only to test features that explicitly require network services.
Record the result, installer version and any special launch option. This turns an assumption into a repeatable recovery procedure.

How to preserve installers for years
Keep at least two copies of each installer, preferably on different kinds of storage or in different locations. An external hard drive or portable SSD is practical for large game packages; a second copy protects against a failed drive. Store the installer, patches, language files, runtime components and a plain-text note containing the purchase edition, operating system and offline-test result in one clearly named folder.

Periodically verify that the files can still be read and, when practical, perform a test installation. Use checksums if you already maintain an archival workflow, and keep the original purchase receipt or account record separately. Backups preserve access to the files; they do not promise that a future operating system will run every old executable.
Common misunderstandings and failure points
“No launcher” means every feature works offline
It does not. A campaign may run locally while multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements or live events remain unavailable. Test and document the specific mode you care about.
A store’s policy covers every game on every platform
Policies can include exceptions, and a creator can package additional requirements inside a game. Read the listing, edition and platform notes each time.
A download button proves the files are standalone
Some download buttons deliver a key, a small bootstrapper or a client-managed package. Confirm the file type and launch path before treating it as an archival installer.
The installer will remain available forever
Store catalogs, regional delivery options and support pages can change. Download and back up the files while your purchase is accessible, then keep redundant copies.
An offline test failed, so the game is not DRM-free
First determine whether the failure came from a missing runtime, permissions, a launcher command or an online-only mode. Compare the behavior with the developer’s installation notes. A campaign that launches after installing a documented local dependency is different from one that insists on account activation.
Which store fits your priority?
| Your priority | Most suitable starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A documented, store-wide offline single-player policy | GOG | Its terms and QA documentation explicitly require offline play without Galaxy for single-player content. |
| Receiving the creator’s files with no platform modification | itch.io | The platform says files are delivered exactly as uploaded, while the creator determines the package. |
| A particular game offered with a standalone installer | Humble Store, after product-page verification | Some titles provide direct installers; the confirmed example is Klei’s Don’t Starve workflow. |
If your priority is long-term replay rather than social features, make the installer and your offline launch test the decision criteria. If multiplayer or cloud functionality is essential, evaluate those services separately; DRM-free single-player access does not replace them.

- Confirm the exact edition, platform and region.
- Determine whether delivery is a standalone installer, creator-uploaded files or a key for another store.
- Read the product’s launcher, account, multiplayer and online-service notes.
- Download the files immediately after purchase.
- Launch the intended single-player mode with the network disconnected.
- Save the installer, patches, runtimes and instructions on redundant storage.
- Recheck the listing when buying another title; one game’s delivery does not establish a store-wide rule.
On the evidence available, GOG is the safest default for a buyer who wants a documented path from purchase to offline installation. itch.io is the most direct file-delivery model but requires the most title-level checking. Humble can work well when the exact listing supplies a standalone installer, yet its DRM status must be established one product at a time.
