Yes—DroidDeck can run Steam and some Windows PC games locally on supported Android handhelds. It launches Valve’s Steam client in Big Picture and uses Valve’s ARM64 Proton compatibility layer; it is not simply streaming a game from another PC. Whether it works well depends on the Android device, its GPU and drivers, and the individual game. DroidDeck is an independent project, not an official Valve app.
What DroidDeck does—and what it does not
DroidDeck provides a Steam Deck-like front end on supported Android hardware. Its documented approach runs the Steam client on the Android device and uses Proton to run Windows games. Steam and Proton assets are fetched from Valve on-device; the project says Valve owns Steam and Proton and that DroidDeck is not affiliated with Valve. The project README describes this setup.

That makes DroidDeck different from Steam Link-style remote play: local execution does not require a separate gaming PC to render and stream the game. It also does not mean Android can run every Windows game. Proton compatibility, GPU drivers, device performance, game requirements, and software updates all affect the result. The project says hardware validation is limited, so check evidence for both your device and the specific game rather than assuming a title will work.

The current README specifies Android 9 or newer and supported Adreno GPUs. The GPU category matters more than the general label “Android phone” or “gaming handheld.”

These are project-stated eligibility categories, not a guarantee that every game runs or performs acceptably. The README does not certify particular commercial device models. If you are considering a Snapdragon Android gaming handheld, verify its exact GPU and Android version, then look for current reports for the games you intend to play. Do not treat a product listing or a broadly similar device as proof of compatibility.
Install DroidDeck and start Steam
Download the APK only from the official Droid-Deck GitHub releases. The README says DroidDeck has no standalone website and warns against download links from sites claiming to represent the team.

- Install the release APK. Use the APK provided through the official releases page.
- Install the Linux runtime in DroidDeck. The project estimates about 3 GB for the runtime. Leave additional room for Steam, games, and updates.
- Check Android’s child-process restriction if launch setup requires it. The README says to turn off “Restrict child processes” in Android Developer options. On Android 12 and 13 devices where that setting is unavailable, the first launch presents a “Fix it for me” button to help automate setup.
- Press Play and sign in. Steam downloads on first launch, so the initial setup needs an internet connection and further storage beyond the runtime estimate.
The documented estimate for the optional Desktop & apps installation is about 1.1 GB additional. Actual free-space needs can be higher once Steam, game files, updates, and user-added applications are included.

DroidDeck is not limited to its Steam interface. The project’s 0.3.0 release notes, dated October 2, 2026, describe an optional Linux desktop, ARM64 Flathub apps, user-added AppImages and Flatpaks, and emulator access. The same notes list Steam Deck-style controls, Steam Input virtual pads, an Xbox 360 controller option, second-screen input options for dual-screen devices, a performance overlay, GPU driver pairing, and in-app update channels. These are documented features, not assurances that every option behaves identically on every supported device.

The optional desktop also has trade-offs. The README says its compositing uses software rendering and that Firefox sandboxing is reduced under proot. In other words, the desktop extends what the app can do, but it should not be mistaken for a fully equivalent, hardware-accelerated desktop Linux installation.

- GPU and Android version: compare the device’s exact specifications with the README’s supported categories.
- Your game: look for recent, device-specific compatibility reports; project-level GPU support alone cannot establish that a particular game works.
- Storage and setup: account for the runtime, first-launch Steam download, games, and any optional desktop or apps.
- Controls and form factor: consider whether the device’s built-in controls, touch input, external controller, or second screen suit the way you plan to play. The documented setup does not require a particular controller accessory.
- Current software: compatibility can change with game, driver, Proton, and app updates. Check the project’s README and release notes for the version you install.
If a problem occurs, the README says DroidDeck keeps logs in app-private storage and allows them to be shared as a scrubbed ZIP for reports. Use the project’s official repository and release information for current guidance.
