For a Drupal 11 site on a VPS in 2026, start with PHP 8.3 or newer, MySQL 8.0+, MariaDB 10.6+, PostgreSQL 16+ with pg_trgm, or SQLite 3.45+ for development only. Treat 1 GB of RAM as the practical floor, 2 GB as the safer size when Composer, several contributed modules, or a cache service run on the same machine, and set PHP’s production memory_limit to at least 256M.

Those are the immediate platform decisions. You also need the required PHP extensions, InnoDB for MySQL-compatible databases, shell access for maintenance, and a reliable cron job. If the server still runs Drupal 10, schedule the move before its 9 December 2026 end of life. Drupal 12 is scheduled for the week of 7 December 2026, but its final platform requirements should be checked against Drupal’s own announcement before you buy hardware for 2027.

PHP: the non-negotiable version and memory settings
PHP 8.3 is Drupal 11’s floor
Drupal 11 requires PHP 8.3 or newer. A VPS running PHP 8.2, 8.1, or an older branch may still serve another application, but it is not a supported Drupal 11 platform. Drupal follows upstream PHP support, so a later Drupal 11 minor release can raise the floor after an older PHP branch leaves upstream support. Check the requirements for the exact Drupal minor release you intend to deploy rather than assuming the 8.3 floor will remain unchanged forever.

Before installing Drupal, confirm the command-line and web-server PHP versions separately. Run php -v over SSH for the CLI version, then create a temporary diagnostic page or use your hosting panel to confirm the PHP version used by the web process. Composer and Drush use the CLI binary; a mismatch can make a site appear compatible in the browser while dependency commands fail.
Choose a realistic memory_limit
Drupal core lists 64M as the minimum PHP memory_limit. That figure leaves room for contributed modules, but it is not a sensible target for a production gaming community, news site, or catalog with administrative tools. Drupal’s older overview says 128M or 256M is typical in production. A practical baseline is therefore 256M, provided the VPS has enough physical RAM to support it.

The PHP packages guidance suggests setting memory_limit = 512M in php.ini while troubleshooting white-screen errors. That is a diagnostic ceiling, not a reason to give every request unlimited memory. Raising the limit can hide an inefficient module or an undersized VPS; inspect the failing request and logs after the emergency change, then return to a value appropriate for the workload.
Check the effective setting with php -i | grep memory_limit for CLI PHP and with the PHP information view for the web SAPI. Restart or reload the PHP service after changing configuration, because an edited file does not alter already-running workers.
Install the extensions Drupal and modules expect
The listed PHP extensions are PDO, XML, GD, OpenSSL, JSON, cURL, mbstring, and zlib. PDO provides database access; XML, JSON, and mbstring are used by core and common packages; GD handles image operations; OpenSSL and cURL support encrypted transport and HTTP requests; zlib provides compression functions. Your exact package names depend on the Linux distribution and PHP packaging source, and contributed modules can add requirements.

After installation, verify extensions with php -m and test the same list through the web SAPI. Composer can also check platform requirements with composer check-platform-reqs. Treat a missing extension as a deployment error rather than disabling a module to make the installer proceed.

Drupal’s supported database choices are not interchangeable in operational terms. Version floors, extensions, storage engines, and managed-service policies affect whether a provider will work.

MySQL and MariaDB: use InnoDB
Drupal depends on transactions and row-level locking, so MySQL and MariaDB must use the InnoDB storage engine. Check the server default and the engine of Drupal’s tables after installation. A provider that silently defaults to a non-InnoDB engine can produce subtle failures during updates or concurrent content edits.
PostgreSQL: verify pg_trgm and extension permissions
PostgreSQL 16 or newer is supported when the pg_trgm extension is available. The database account or managed service must permit CREATE EXTENSION (or have an administrator enable it for you). Some hosted PostgreSQL products restrict extension creation; that policy makes the service unsuitable even if its advertised PostgreSQL version is high enough.
SQLite: useful for development, not production editing
SQLite 3.45 or newer is a development option. It is convenient for a local build or a disposable test site, but it is not a production choice once several editors are saving content. Move to MySQL, MariaDB, or PostgreSQL before launch rather than treating a SQLite site as a scalable starting point.

How much RAM does a Drupal VPS need?
1 GB is a practical starting point
Drupal does not publish a universal system-RAM minimum. A third-party hosting guide gives 1 GB for Drupal 11, which is a useful lower bound for a small site with modest traffic and no heavy build process. On a 1 GB machine, leave enough headroom for the operating system, database, PHP workers, and web server; do not assume all memory can be assigned to PHP.
Choose 2 GB for maintenance and real workloads
Use 2 GB when Composer runs on the VPS, when the site has several contributed modules, or when you add an external object-cache layer. Composer alone is cited as needing about 1 GB of memory, so a 1 GB instance can fail during dependency resolution even if ordinary page requests work. A logged-in gaming community, forum, or editorial team also creates more concurrent uncached requests than a simple anonymous brochure site.
RAM is workload guidance, not a promise of a particular visitor count. Monitor memory pressure during imports, cache rebuilds, updates, and peak editorial activity. If the kernel kills PHP or the database, increase the VPS size before raising per-process limits further.
Operational additions that make a small VPS workable
Practical hosting guidance commonly adds OPcache, shell access for Composer and Drush, a real system cron, and an external object cache once logged-in users exist. These are not Drupal core minimums, but they address predictable operational needs: OPcache reduces repeated PHP compilation, shell access enables repeatable deployment commands, cron runs scheduled maintenance, and an external cache avoids forcing every logged-in request through the database. Treat them as workload-dependent improvements rather than checkboxes that make an unsupported platform supported.
Provisioning checklist for a Drupal 11 VPS
- Select the operating system and access model. Use a maintained Linux VPS image and ensure you have administrative access, SSH, and a way to schedule system cron. The hosting plan must let you install the required PHP extensions and database version.
- Confirm PHP twice. Run
php -vfor CLI PHP and verify the web SAPI separately. Both must meet the Drupal 11 PHP floor; Composer and Drush follow the CLI binary. - Set memory deliberately. Keep the core minimum of 64M in perspective. Set production PHP to at least 256M, document any temporary 512M troubleshooting change, and reload PHP after editing configuration.
- Install and test the database. Choose MySQL 8.0+, MariaDB 10.6+, or PostgreSQL 16+. For MySQL-compatible services, verify InnoDB. For PostgreSQL, verify
pg_trgmand extension-creation permissions. Reserve SQLite 3.45+ for development. - Install the PHP extensions. Check PDO, XML, GD, OpenSSL, JSON, cURL, mbstring, and zlib with
php -m, then run Composer’s platform check. Add module-specific extensions as Composer reports them. - Test Composer before the first deployment. Run the dependency install or update under the same user and PHP binary that deployment will use. If the process is killed for memory, move to a 2 GB VPS or run Composer in a build environment rather than repeatedly increasing request limits.
- Configure scheduled maintenance. Create a real system cron entry for Drupal’s scheduled tasks and verify that it executes successfully. Do not rely on occasional human page loads for maintenance on a site with logged-in users.
- Add caching according to traffic. Enable OPcache and consider an external object cache when authenticated traffic or module count makes database-backed caching a bottleneck. Validate cache invalidation after publishing content.
- Run a production-like test. Exercise login, image handling, content publishing, cron, cache rebuilds, database updates, and a Composer operation. These paths expose missing extensions and memory limits that a home page check will not.

Drupal 10 support is tied to 9 December 2026, not to the date Drupal 12 happens to ship. The schedule currently places Drupal 12.0.0 and Drupal 11.5.0 in the week of 7 December 2026, replacing an earlier mid-to-late-2026 expectation. Release dates can move, so verify the live core schedule when planning a maintenance window.

The Drupal 12 migration path has two easily missed details. First, a site on Drupal 11.3.x or earlier must update to 11.4.0 or later before moving to Drupal 12. Second, Migrate Drupal and Migrate Drupal UI were removed from core, so migration tooling must be reviewed before the upgrade rather than assumed to be present.
Do not size a 2027 VPS from unconfirmed claims about Drupal 12’s PHP or database floors. Final Drupal 12 platform requirements should come from Drupal’s official announcement and requirements page. Until then, size for the supported Drupal 11 stack and leave capacity for a future PHP or database change.
Troubleshooting common VPS failures
The installer rejects PHP
Confirm both CLI and web PHP versions. If they differ, update the web-server PHP handler or the command-line alternative so Drupal and Composer evaluate the same supported version. Do not bypass the requirement with compatibility flags.
A blank page or white-screen error appears
Check PHP and web-server logs first. Confirm extensions, then test a temporary memory_limit = 512M setting as recommended in Drupal’s PHP package guidance. If the error disappears, identify the module or operation consuming memory and resize the VPS or correct the underlying configuration instead of leaving an unnecessarily high limit permanently.
PostgreSQL installation fails during setup
Ask the provider to enable pg_trgm or grant the required extension permission. A PostgreSQL version above 16 does not compensate for a managed service that blocks CREATE EXTENSION.

Content saves fail or updates behave unpredictably on MySQL-compatible hosting
Inspect the table engines and confirm InnoDB. Drupal’s transactions and row-level locking require it; changing the engine is a database administration task that should be tested on a backup before production.

Composer’s approximately 1 GB memory requirement can exceed a 1 GB VPS once the operating system and services are included. Run the command on a 2 GB instance or in a separate build environment, then deploy the generated code and lock file.
SQLite works locally but fails for editors
That behavior is expected when a development database is promoted to a multi-editor production site. Export the site and move to MySQL, MariaDB, or PostgreSQL before launch.
Final sizing decision
For a new Drupal 11 gaming, community, or content site in 2026, provision PHP 8.3+, a supported production database, all required extensions, 1 GB RAM only for a genuinely small workload, and 2 GB when server-side Composer, several contributed modules, or authenticated traffic are part of the plan. Set PHP memory to 256M in production, verify the database’s engine or extension policies, and schedule the Drupal 10-to-11 migration before 9 December 2026. Treat Drupal 12’s platform requirements as a future compatibility check, not as settled facts until Drupal publishes them.
