“This application failed to start because drv.dll was not found.”
The drv.dll error usually points to the old Fantom CD application, not to Windows itself. The safest repair is to restore the complete Fantom CD or bundled Copystar installation rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
Which fix applies to you
Choose the situation that best matches what you see:
- The error appears when starting an old CD-writing or virtual-disc program: identify that program and reinstall it from its original installer or installation media.
- Fantom CD was recently removed, reinstalled, or moved: reinstall it to restore its application files and related components.
- Windows Security recently quarantined a file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- The error appears after a Windows upgrade or on a newer 64-bit PC: the old application may need compatibility settings, and its 32-bit components may not work correctly in the current environment.
- The message appears after uninstalling Fantom CD at every boot: locate the orphaned startup entry or scheduled task, then remove only the entry that clearly points to the old program.
- Several Windows programs also report missing or damaged system files: run DISM and SFC, but do not expect them to recreate
drv.dll. - You found
drv.dllin a temporary or user-writable folder: scan the file and the computer before attempting a repair.
What drv.dll is
Public historical file metadata identifies drv.dll as the Fantom CD Device Support Library, developed by An Chen Computer Co., Ltd. It belongs to the old Fantom CD software family and is not identified as a normal Windows component.

Historical records associate Fantom CD with files including fcdm.exe, fcdcmd.exe, fcdchs.dll, fcdcht.dll, and copystar.dll. Some installations used a path similar to:
D:Program FilesCopystarFantom CDdrv.dll
That path is an example of a historical installation location, not a path you should create manually.

The differing historical builds matter. Copying a DLL from another Fantom CD release can create a new error involving an entry point, bad image, or incompatible dependency.
Windows normally searches an application’s own directory before system directories. That is why the correct copy of an application DLL normally belongs beside the executable that uses it, not in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Before repairing anything, find the parent application.
Check the error window and shortcut
- Start the program that produces the error.
- Note the title bar and the complete message.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Select Open File Location if that button is available.
- Inspect the folder for Fantom CD-related files or a Copystar installation.
If the shortcut points to an old CD utility, virtual-device program, or a bundled optical-disc application, repair that program first.
Search for existing copies
- Press
Win+Eto open File Explorer. - Select This PC.
- In the search box, enter:

- Wait for the search to finish.
- Right-click each result and select Open file location.
- Record the complete path and examine the surrounding files.
A copy inside the original Fantom CD program directory is more consistent with the historical software. A copy in a temporary folder, Downloads folder, or an unfamiliar user-writable directory should be treated cautiously.
Do not overwrite an existing copy until you know which executable is loading it.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Fantom CD
This is the primary fix because drv.dll is an application DLL.
Try the installed-program repair option
- Press
Win+Ito open Settings. - Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Fantom CD, Copystar, or the CD-writing application that shows the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
Not every legacy program provides a Repair button. If the option is absent or does not resolve the error, continue with a complete reinstall.

Reinstall from original media
- Locate the original Fantom CD or Copystar installer, CD, backup, or organization-provided software package.
- If the program is still listed, open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select its three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer.
- If Windows blocks access to the installation folder, right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation without copying individual DLL files from elsewhere.
- Restart again.
- Start the original application from its newly installed shortcut.
If the installer is on optical media, copy the installer files to a local folder first if the disc is readable, then run the setup program from that folder as administrator.
There is no verified current official An Chen redistributable for drv.dll. The safest sources are your original installation media, a backup made from a trusted installation, or software supplied by the organization that originally deployed the application. An old uninstall record or product listing is not a substitute for an official current installer.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair worked if:
- the original program opens without the
drv.dllmessage - the program’s executable and its DLLs are together in the installation directory
- the error does not return after restarting Windows
- the application can reach the CD or virtual-device function it was installed to provide
If the message changes to another missing file, do not download that file individually. The application installation is incomplete or its additional legacy dependencies are unavailable. Reinstall the complete program again and check whether its device component is supported on the current version of Windows.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Security software can remove or quarantine an old application DLL. It can also correctly identify a modified or malicious file, so restoration must not be automatic.
Review Protection history
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection that mentions
drv.dllor the Fantom CD program. - Check the detected file’s full path and detection name.

Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:

- the file is in the expected Fantom CD application directory
- the installer or media came from a trusted source
- the parent application is known and intentionally installed
- you have checked the detection details and understand why it was flagged
- a current security scan does not identify broader malware
If any condition is uncertain, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the complete application from trusted media. Do not create a blanket antivirus exclusion for an old program merely to suppress the error.
Fix 3: Check the application’s architecture and compatibility
Historical metadata identifies drv.dll as a 32-bit DLL. A 32-bit DLL is intended to load into a compatible 32-bit process. It is not interchangeable with a 64-bit DLL, and placing a 32-bit file beside a 64-bit executable will not make the application compatible.
Windows can run many 32-bit applications through its compatibility layer, but that does not guarantee that old optical-disc drivers or device components will work on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Set compatibility options
- Right-click the Fantom CD executable or shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version only if the application’s original documentation or deployment environment indicates one.
- Select Run this program as an administrator if the program needs privileged access.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the application again.
If the program installs a device driver, compatibility mode may not be enough. A legacy driver can be blocked, fail to start, or be incompatible with current Windows security requirements.

Do not replace drv.dll with a file from another architecture or another Fantom CD build. If the program reports “bad image,” an entry-point error, or a load failure after replacement, reinstall the matching application package instead.
Fix 4: Inspect related drivers in Device Manager
drv.dll itself is a user-mode application library, not something you normally install through Device Manager. Device Manager is useful for checking whether the old application’s related optical or virtual-device component is missing, disabled, or reporting an error.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- Expand Storage controllers and any category that matches the installed application.
- Look for a yellow warning icon or an unknown device.
- Right-click a clearly related device and select Properties.
- Read the Device status message on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab to review the provider, date, and status.
- Use Update Driver only when Windows or the hardware vendor provides a matching driver.
- Restart Windows after a driver change.
Do not uninstall an unknown storage controller or delete a driver merely because its name is unfamiliar. If the application’s installer originally supplied the device component, rerun that installer instead.
When Windows cannot identify an old device driver, the practical solution may be to use the original program on a supported older system or replace the legacy application with a current optical-disc utility.
When you manually inspect Device Manager, the hard part is knowing which of many drivers is genuinely stale or unrelated. Fix 5: Run DISM and System File Checker for Windows corruption
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore drv.dll, because available evidence does not identify it as a Windows file.
Use these tools when other Windows programs also show system-file errors, Windows features are failing, or the problem began with broader system corruption.

- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:

- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:

sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the parent application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker instructions.
Possible outcomes include:
- No integrity violations: Windows protected files are not the likely cause. Repair Fantom CD instead.
- Corrupt files repaired: restart and test again.
- Some files could not be repaired: run Windows Update, restart, and repeat the commands. If the
drv.dllmessage remains, treat it as an application-repair issue.
Repeating SFC will not manufacture a third-party DLL that Windows never supplied.

Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET are not interchangeable replacements for drv.dll. There is no evidence that a Microsoft runtime package contains this Fantom CD library.
You can still review Windows optional features if the application documentation specifically requires an older Windows component:
- Press

- Enable a feature only when the application’s documentation identifies it as required.
- Select OK.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable or disable features at random to resolve an application DLL message. If a runtime installer is supplied with the original Fantom CD package, use that package rather than downloading a similarly named file from an unrelated source.

System Restore can help when Fantom CD worked recently and the failure began immediately after a driver installation, program removal, or Windows configuration change.
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:

- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the programs and drivers that will be affected.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
Microsoft describes the process and limitations in its System Restore guidance. System Restore normally does not remove personal files, but it can roll back installed programs, drivers, and system settings.
If the error began because antivirus quarantined drv.dll, System Restore is not a substitute for validating the file and reinstalling the application.
Do not copy drv.dll into System32
Avoid these common mistakes:
- downloading
drv.dllfrom a random DLL site - copying it into
C:WindowsSystem32 - copying it into
C:WindowsSysWOW64 - replacing a 32-bit DLL with a 64-bit file
- mixing files from different Fantom CD releases
- using a registry cleaner
- registering the file blindly with
regsvr32
Manual DLL downloads are risky because the file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different build, or lack related drivers and dependencies. A successful copy can also hide the original installation problem and introduce DLL search-path or hijacking risks. Microsoft explains these risks in its DLL security guidance.
The safe source is the complete original Fantom CD or Copystar installer, not an isolated replacement file.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that this device-support library is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component.

regsvr32 drv.dll
It may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found,” and it will not recreate a missing file or install a device driver. Microsoft’s Regsvr32 reference explains when registration is appropriate.
Is drv.dll malware
The filename alone cannot answer that question.
Check:
- The full file path.
- The parent executable.
- The file’s digital signature, if present.
- The antivirus detection name.
- Whether the file came from original Fantom CD media.
- Whether a full Windows Security scan detects other threats.
A file inside the expected Fantom CD directory is more consistent with the historical application. A copy in a temporary, Downloads, or user-writable folder deserves additional scrutiny. If the file is detected, do not restore it simply because deleting it causes an error. Quarantine the file, scan the system, and reinstall the parent application from trusted media.

If the error appears after uninstalling Fantom CD
An old startup entry may still be calling the removed program.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for an entry associated with Fantom CD, Copystar, or a clearly matching installation path.
- Right-click it and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Also check Task Scheduler:
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that clearly reference the removed application.
- Open a task’s Actions tab to verify its executable path.
- Disable or delete the task only when the path unmistakably belongs to the uninstalled program.
Do not delete arbitrary registry entries based only on the filename drv.dll.

Should I copy drv.dll to System32?
No. Keep the application’s matching DLL beside the executable that uses it. System-directory copying can cause conflicts and security problems.

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while drv.dll is identified as a third-party application library.
Why does a 32-bit DLL appear on a 64-bit PC?
Windows can run many 32-bit programs through its compatibility layer. However, the entire legacy application, including its device drivers, still has to function on the current Windows release.
What if reinstalling Fantom CD does not help?
Record the exact executable, complete error text, Windows version, drv.dll path, antivirus detection name, and whether the original installer is available. The remaining issue may be an unsupported legacy application or a missing device component rather than a simple DLL file.
Prevention
Keep a backup of the original Fantom CD installer and its license or deployment documentation. Do not move individual DLLs between computers, and do not use system folders as storage for application libraries.
If the program is essential, consider running it in an environment that supports its original device components. If it is no longer supported, replacing it with a current optical-disc application is safer than repeatedly reconstructing old installation files.
