nrage_dinput8.dll is the DirectInput 8 controller plugin used by some Nintendo 64 emulators. If nrage_dinput8.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, restore the NRage plugin to the emulator’s own plugins folder rather than copying it into Windows.
The file is not a Windows system file. It does not belong in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or a normal driver package. The safest repair is to reinstall the emulator or obtain the NRage plugin from its original project archive, then select it in the emulator’s input settings.
Identify the file before repairing it
| Item | Correct identification |
|---|---|
| File | nrage_dinput8.dll |
| Internal description | NRage_DInput8 |
| Program component | NRage DirectInput-Plugin |
| Purpose | Controller, keyboard, mouse, rumble, and related N64 input support |
| Typical host programs | Project64, Apollo, 1964, and TR64 |
| Correct location | The emulator’s plugins directory |
| Windows component | No |
| Registration | Normally not required |
| Architecture | Match the emulator and plugin; older builds are commonly 32-bit |
The name can be confusing because it contains dinput8. NRage uses Microsoft DirectInput 8, but nrage_dinput8.dll is not the same file as Windows’ own dinput8.dll.
What the error message means
You may see any of these messages:
- “Failed to load
nrage_dinput8.dll” - “The specified module could not be found”
- “The program can’t start because
nrage_dinput8.dllis missing” - “
nrage_dinput8.dllwas not found” - “The file is missing or corrupted”
- “This application was unable to start correctly”
A missing-file message usually means the plugin was deleted, moved, quarantined, or placed in the wrong emulator directory.

However, “the specified module could not be found” can also mean that nrage_dinput8.dll is present but one of its dependencies is missing. If the error names msvcr80.dll, msvcp70.dll, or another Microsoft runtime file, repair that dependency instead of downloading another copy of the NRage DLL.
Fix 1: Restore the plugin from the emulator package
This is the most likely solution.
If you still have the emulator installer
- Close the emulator.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the N64 emulator.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
- Run the repair option if available.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the emulator and check its input-plugin settings.
If the installer has no repair option, reinstall the emulator from the original project or vendor distribution. Back up save files and configuration files first. Do not remove those files until you know where the emulator stores them.
If you have the NRage plugin archive
- Download the plugin only from the original NRage project distribution or the emulator’s trusted package.
- Scan the downloaded archive with Windows Security before opening it.
- Right-click the archive and choose Extract All.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Locate
nrage_dinput8.dll. - Open the emulator’s installation folder.
- Open its
pluginsfolder. Common locations include apluginssubfolder beside the emulator executable, but the exact path depends on the emulator. - Copy the plugin into that folder.
- Start the emulator.
- Open its controller, input, or plugin configuration page.
- Select the NRage or DirectInput plugin.
- Save the configuration and restart the emulator.
If the emulator does not list the plugin, confirm that the DLL is directly inside the folder the emulator scans. Do not leave it buried inside the extracted archive’s extra subfolders.
How to confirm the repair
The repair worked if:
- The emulator starts without the missing-DLL message.
- NRage appears in the input-plugin list.
- The emulator opens its controller configuration page.
- A controller or other DirectInput device can be selected.
If the plugin appears but loading still fails, continue with the architecture and dependency checks below.

A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit applications. It does not mean that every DLL must be 64-bit.
Older N64 emulators and NRage builds are commonly 32-bit. A 32-bit emulator requires a compatible 32-bit plugin. A 64-bit emulator requires a plugin built for its architecture. Public catalog information for this file is inconsistent, so do not rely on a file listing that claims a particular architecture without checking the trusted package and emulator.
Check whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
This tells you the Windows architecture, not necessarily the emulator architecture.
Check the emulator executable
- Open the emulator’s installation folder.
- Right-click the emulator’s
.exefile. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and note the product information.
- If the emulator documentation or download page offers separate 32-bit and 64-bit builds, use the plugin matching that build.
If a 32-bit plugin is placed in a 64-bit emulator, or the reverse, the emulator may report that the module failed to load even though the file is visibly present.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not fix an architecture mismatch by renaming the DLL or copying it into a different Windows folder. Install a matching emulator and plugin build instead.
Fix 3: Find the missing dependency
A plugin can exist in the correct folder and still fail because Windows cannot load one of the libraries it requires.

The older NRage documentation mentions legacy Microsoft Visual C++ runtime files, including MSVCR80.dll, MSVCR70.dll, and MSVCP70.dll. If the error explicitly names one of these files, install the corresponding Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable from Microsoft or reinstall the complete emulator package.
Do not assume that the newest Visual C++ package replaces every older runtime. Different Visual C++ generations can coexist, and an old program may require a specific generation.
Use the error message first
- Start the emulator.
- Read the complete error carefully.
- Write down every filename mentioned.
- If the named file is
nrage_dinput8.dll, restore the plugin. - If the named file is
msvcr80.dll,msvcp70.dll, or another runtime, repair that runtime. - Restart the emulator after installing the correct Microsoft package.
If Windows only says “the specified module could not be found,” use the emulator’s log if it has one. You can also use a reputable dependency-analysis utility to identify which imported library is missing. The exact dependency list can differ between NRage builds.
Check the plugin path again
Before installing more software, confirm that:
- The filename is exactly
nrage_dinput8.dll. - Windows has not added a second extension such as
.dll.dll. - The file is not still inside a ZIP archive.
- The file is in the emulator’s active
pluginsdirectory. - The emulator is not using a second installation in another folder.
To display file extensions:
- Open File Explorer.
- Select View.
- Select Show.
- Turn on File name extensions.
- Inspect the plugin filename.
Fix 4: Install missing legacy DirectX components only when indicated
NRage documentation requires Windows and DirectX 8 or newer. Some older emulators also depend on legacy DirectX components that are not included in the current DirectX installation.
Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer installs older side-by-side components used by some legacy applications. It does not replace the current DirectX version in Windows.
Use it when:
- The emulator reports a missing DirectX component.
- The emulator starts but fails while initializing input or graphics.
- Reinstalling the plugin has not resolved a DirectX-related error.
Do not treat DirectX installation as the primary repair for a missing nrage_dinput8.dll. It will not recreate a deleted plugin.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine an emulator plugin, particularly when the emulator or plugin was downloaded from an old archive.
Windows Security steps
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving the emulator folder or
nrage_dinput8.dll. - Expand the entry and review the detection details.
- Restore the file only if the original archive and source are trusted.
- Run a scan of the complete emulator folder.
- Start the emulator again.
If the detection returns, do not repeatedly disable antivirus protection. Obtain a fresh copy from the original project distribution and investigate the detection. If the DLL appeared in an unexpected directory, run a full Microsoft Defender scan and inspect the entire emulator installation.
Fix 6: Use the launcher’s verify or repair function
Some emulator packages and game launchers can restore missing files automatically.
- Open the launcher used to install the emulator.
- Find the emulator in the library.
- Open its context menu or management page.
- Look for Verify files, Repair, Scan and repair, or a similar command.
- Start the verification.
- Allow the launcher to restore missing files.
- Restart Windows if the launcher requests it.
- Open the emulator and reselect the NRage input plugin.
If no verification function exists, reinstall the emulator from its original installer. Preserve save files, memory-card files, controller profiles, and configuration backups before uninstalling.

Fix 7: Update controller drivers only if input still fails
If the emulator now opens but no controller responds, the remaining problem may be the controller, DirectInput configuration, or its driver rather than nrage_dinput8.dll.
Check the device in Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices.
- Also check Sound, video and game controllers.
- Look for the controller or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the controller and test it in the emulator.
If the device has a warning icon:
- Right-click the device in Device Manager.
- Select Properties.
- Open the General tab.
- Read Device status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the reported problem.
- Use Roll Back Driver if a recent update caused the failure, or select Uninstall Device and restart Windows so it can be detected again.
Do not replace the NRage plugin with a random controller DLL. A driver problem is repaired through the device manufacturer, Windows Update, or Device Manager.
When manually hunting through hardware pages and comparing several controller drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are outdated; its free scan identifies the issue, while driver installation is handled by the full version. The emulator and NRage plugin still need to come from their original project package.

nrage_dinput8.dll is a third-party application plugin, so System File Checker will not recreate it. Use Windows repair commands only when other Windows components are also malfunctioning.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Terminal.
- Right-click Windows Terminal.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Terminal again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.
Microsoft documents DISM and SFC repair guidance and System File Checker.
These commands can repair damaged protected Windows files. They will not download or restore nrage_dinput8.dll to an emulator folder.
When repeatedly running SFC and DISM leaves you guessing about what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing reported system issues; its free scan identifies problems, while repairs are performed by the full version. For this file, reinstalling the emulator or NRage package remains the definitive repair.
What not to do
Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders contain Windows components and shared libraries. Placing an emulator plugin there does not make the emulator load it and can create confusion about which copy is being used.
The correct destination is the emulator’s own plugins directory.
Do not download a random standalone DLL
DLL collection pages can provide the wrong build, wrong architecture, altered files, or a file with an unrelated dependency problem. A downloaded DLL may also conceal the fact that the emulator installation is incomplete.
Use the original NRage project archive or the emulator’s trusted installer. Reinstall the complete package when possible.

Do not use regsvr32
NRage is normally loaded through the emulator’s plugin interface. It is not an ordinary COM or ActiveX component that needs registration.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points. Running it against this plugin will not repair a missing dependency or place the plugin in the emulator’s plugin list. Microsoft describes the utility in its Regsvr32 documentation.
Do not install .NET blindly
Old NRage documentation contains historical runtime notes, but a missing msvcr80.dll should be treated as a Visual C++ runtime issue, not automatically as a .NET issue. Install the runtime named by the error from Microsoft or reinstall the emulator package.
Frequently asked questions
Is nrage_dinput8.dll a Windows file?
No. It is part of the NRage DirectInput plugin for N64 emulators. Windows does not normally ship it.
Which emulator uses it?
The NRage documentation lists Project64, Apollo, 1964, and TR64 as compatible emulators. Other emulator builds may use different input-plugin formats.
Where should I put the DLL?
Usually in the emulator’s plugins folder. The exact path depends on the emulator installation. Confirm the active plugin directory in the emulator’s settings or documentation.
Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
The architecture must match the emulator. Older NRage and N64 emulator builds are commonly 32-bit, even on 64-bit Windows. Conflicting catalog information means you should verify the trusted package rather than rely on a filename listing.
Why does Windows say “module not found” when the DLL is present?
A required dependency may be missing. Check whether the error names msvcr80.dll, msvcp70.dll, another Visual C++ runtime, or a DirectX component.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I install both DirectX and Visual C++?
Only when the error or emulator indicates both are required. DirectX repairs missing legacy DirectX components. Visual C++ repairs missing runtime libraries. Neither package replaces the NRage plugin itself.
What if the emulator still crashes after reinstalling?
Confirm the plugin architecture, inspect the emulator log, check antivirus history, and identify the exact dependency named by the loader. If the plugin loads but controller input fails, troubleshoot the controller driver and emulator configuration separately.
What information should I collect for further troubleshooting?
Record the emulator name and build, the exact error text, the full path where nrage_dinput8.dll is installed, the Windows architecture, and whether the message also names a Microsoft runtime DLL.
