It is the historical Disk Maintenance APIs component used by Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, and their ScanDisk utilities.
If Windows 11 or Windows 10 says that dskmaint.dll is missing, the message usually comes from an obsolete application, an old installer, incorrectly repackaged software, or malware. Do not download a random copy and place it in System32 or SysWOW64. First identify the program requesting the file.

Historical Microsoft documentation connects the file with ScanDisk programs such as SCANDSKW, SCANDISK, and their matching support files. A damaged or missing copy could produce a ScanDisk crash, a “cannot load or find DSKMAINT.DLL” message, or an illegal-operation error.
The file is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, hardware driver, or general-purpose modern Windows library. There is no verified current Microsoft redistributable package specifically for dskmaint.dll.

First determine which program is reporting the error
Do not begin by copying a DLL. The correct repair depends on whether the error appears on a genuine Windows 9x installation or on a current computer running old software.
If the computer runs Windows 11 or Windows 10
Look at the window title and the text surrounding the error. Record:
- The application name.
- Whether the message appears during startup or when opening a particular file.
- The folder containing the application.
- Whether the program was recently installed, copied, or restored from an old backup.
- Whether antivirus software recently quarantined a file.
You can check the application location as follows:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select the Details tab.
- If the affected program is running, right-click it.
- Select Open file location.
- Note the program folder and its publisher.
If the error appears immediately after signing in, check startup entries:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Startup.
- Turn off a suspicious or obsolete entry temporarily.
- Restart Windows.
You can also inspect Settings > Apps > Installed apps and sort by installation date. If the message began after installing an old utility, game, disk tool, or repackaged program, that program is the most likely source.
If the computer really runs Windows 95, 98, or Me
The historical location is:
C:WindowsSystem
The file should be restored from the same Windows release or from the matching Microsoft Plus. media. Do not treat a Windows 98 or Windows Me file as automatically compatible with Windows 95.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that requests the file
This is the safest first step on Windows 11 and Windows 10.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the program named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help:
- Return to the program’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart the computer.
- Obtain the application from its original vendor media or official distribution source.
- Install it again.
- Start it from its normal shortcut.
Do not install a separate DLL first. A proper installer may include several files that must match one another. Copying only dskmaint.dll can leave the program with a second missing dependency or an incompatible file version.

If the program is very old, it may not be compatible with current Windows. Try the built-in compatibility settings only after reinstalling from a trustworthy source:
- Right-click the program’s shortcut or executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an appropriate older Windows version.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Run the program again.
Compatibility mode cannot recreate the original Windows 9x ScanDisk environment. If the application genuinely requires Windows 9x components, use a properly preserved legacy computer, disk image, or virtual machine rather than scattering old DLLs through a modern Windows installation.
Fix 2: Repair current Windows system files
This repair is appropriate when Windows itself is damaged or when several built-in programs are failing. It is not proof that Windows 10 or Windows 11 normally contains dskmaint.dll.
Run DISM first, then System File Checker.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart the computer.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. If it reports that the restore operation completed successfully, continue with SFC.

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward and test the affected program.
The result will usually state whether Windows found and repaired corrupted files. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If dskmaint.dll still is not restored, that is expected when the file is not part of the current Windows component store. In that case, repair or remove the obsolete application requesting it.
When manually hunting through Windows components, it is easy to repeat repairs without knowing which file changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; its repair function requires the full version, and it is optional rather than a requirement for fixing this legacy dependency.
Microsoft’s guidance for DISM and SFC is available through its System File Checker instructions.
Fix 3: Restore the file on genuine Windows 95, 98, or Me
Use this procedure only on the original legacy operating system or a faithful virtual machine. It is not a method for adding a supported component to Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Windows 95 or Microsoft Plus. for Windows 95
You need the original installation CD or floppy media for the same edition and installation. Back up important files first.
- Restart Windows.
- Choose Restart in MS-DOS mode.
- At the DOS prompt, enter:
cd windowssystem
- Press Enter.
- Insert the matching Windows or Plus. media.
- Determine the media drive letter, commonly
D:. - For a Plus. installation, enter:
extract D:plus_2.cab dskmaint.dll
Replace D: with the actual media drive letter.
If Plus. was not installed, the matching Windows 95 installation media may contain the file in Precopy2.cab. Use the original media for that Windows release rather than a downloaded CAB or DLL.
Restart Windows after extraction and run ScanDisk again.
Recommended Free Tools
Windows 95 OSR2
For Windows 95 OSR2 media, the historical extraction form is:
extract D:win95precopy2.cab dskmaint.dll /L %windir%system
Run it from an MS-DOS prompt with the appropriate CD or floppy drive letter. The command’s destination is the legacy Windows System directory, not System32.
If ScanDisk still crashes, restore the matching scandskw.exe and scandisk.exe from the same installation media. A replacement dskmaint.dll can still fail when the ScanDisk executables belong to another Windows release.
Windows 98 or Windows Me
Use the built-in System File Checker or the original Windows installation media for the exact edition. The CAB filename and directory can differ by release and media layout, so do not assume the Windows 95 command applies unchanged.
On a genuine Windows 98 installation:
- Open Start.
- Select Programs.
- Select Accessories.
- Select System Tools.
- Open System Information.
- Open Tools.
- Select System File Checker.
- Choose Extract one file from installation disk if that option is available.
- Enter
dskmaint.dll. - Select the original Windows installation source.
- Restore the file to the Windows
Systemdirectory. - Restart the computer.
If the file is restored but ScanDisk still fails, restore the matching ScanDisk executables as a set. Avoid mixing Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me files.

Fix 4: Correct a version mismatch
A missing-file message is not always caused by deletion. ScanDisk can crash when dskmaint.dll, scandskw.exe, and scandisk.exe come from different Windows releases.
This can happen after:
- Installing a service pack or update from the wrong release.
- Booting from an unrelated Windows startup disk.
- Replacing one executable manually.
- Restoring files from a different computer.
- Mixing Windows 95, 98, and Me installation media.
- Installing an old disk utility over the original Windows files.
The reliable repair is to restore the complete matching group from the same original media:
dskmaint.dllscandskw.exescandisk.exe
Do not judge success solely by whether the missing-file message disappears. Run the actual ScanDisk operation that previously failed. If it crashes again, the files may still be mismatched, or the disk or file system may be damaged.
Fix 5: Check the disk and the old installation
On a legacy system, repeated corruption can indicate a failing disk or a damaged file system rather than a single bad DLL.
Before making further repairs:
- Back up personal files.
- Use trusted installation media or a preserved system image.
- Run the disk-checking utility appropriate to that Windows release.
- Restart and test ScanDisk again.
- If corruption returns, replace the failing storage device or restore the complete legacy image.
Do not keep replacing individual DLLs when several system files are becoming damaged. A complete restoration or clean installation from matching media is safer.

dskmaint.dll is not a device driver, so reinstalling drivers is not a first-line fix. Consider a driver only if the error began immediately after a storage-controller or disk-management change and Windows also reports hardware problems.
To check:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Disk drives.
- Expand Storage controllers.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Device status message.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver or Roll Back Driver only when the device evidence supports it.
Restart after the driver change and test the original application. Do not install a random storage driver merely because the filename ends in .dll.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Manually matching storage and chipset drivers can mean hunting through hardware identifiers and comparing versions. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify candidates; its driver installation requires the full version, and it is optional. For this particular file, repairing the requesting legacy application remains more relevant than updating a driver.
Fix 7: Check quarantine and investigate malware
If dskmaint.dll appeared recently in a modern Windows folder, especially beside an unfamiliar executable, do not assume it is a legitimate Windows restoration.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Check whether security software quarantined a file related to the affected program.
- Do not restore the file unless its origin is clear.
- Return to Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Run a Full scan.
If the file appeared alongside suspicious software, uninstall that software and investigate the application’s source. A modern program claiming that it needs a Windows 9x maintenance DLL may be incorrectly packaged or unsafe.
What not to do
Do not download an arbitrary DLL
Random DLL download sites pages can provide:
- A file from the wrong Windows release.
- A modified or malicious file.
- A file with the wrong companion dependencies.
- A file that works only on a different architecture.
- A replacement that hides the real application or security problem.
The correct source for a genuine Windows 9x installation is matching original Windows or Plus. media, or a complete repair or restoration of that legacy operating system.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Historical references place dskmaint.dll in:
%windir%System
That means the legacy Windows System directory, not the modern C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 directories. Do not choose a “32-bit” or “64-bit” download as if this were a current runtime package.
Do not register it with Regsvr32
dskmaint.dll is a support library for old disk-maintenance tools, not a typical self-registering COM or ActiveX component. Running:
regsvr32 dskmaint.dll
is not an appropriate repair and can produce a registration failure. Microsoft’s Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance explains why some DLLs cannot be registered.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
Installing Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a device driver will not normally provide this file. The filename alone does not establish a dependency on any of those packages.

Should I put dskmaint.dll in System32?
No. Its historical location is the Windows 9x System directory. There is no verified reason to copy it into modern System32 or SysWOW64.
Is dskmaint.dll a Windows 11 file?
No current Microsoft documentation establishes it as a supported Windows 11 component. It is associated with Windows 95, 98, Me, and related ScanDisk utilities.
Is dskmaint.dll safe?
The genuine historical Microsoft file is legitimate. A file downloaded from an unknown source is not automatically safe merely because its filename is correct. Verify the source and scan unexpected files.
Will SFC restore it?
Usually not on Windows 10 or Windows 11, because the file is not a normal current component. SFC can repair current Windows files, but an obsolete application requesting dskmaint.dll generally needs to be repaired, reinstalled, or removed.

Can System Restore fix the problem?
System Restore may help on a supported Windows installation if a recently installed program removed or changed files. It cannot manufacture the correct Windows 95, 98, or Me build on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Is this a driver problem?
Normally no. dskmaint.dll is a legacy disk-maintenance support library, not a device driver. Investigate drivers only when Device Manager also reports a related storage hardware problem.
What is the definitive fix on an old computer?
Restore dskmaint.dll from matching original installation media and, when necessary, restore scandskw.exe and scandisk.exe from that same Windows release. If the installation or disk is broadly damaged, restore the complete system image or reinstall the matching legacy operating system.
