dtsrcfle.dll is a Microsoft Money application DLL, not a normal Windows component. If Windows reports that dtsrcfle.dll is missing, not found, or cannot load, repair or reinstall the Microsoft Money installation that needs it instead of downloading a loose DLL.
What dtsrcfle.dll is
The file is identified as “Data source file” and is associated with Microsoft Money and Microsoft Corporation. Available file records describe it as a 32-bit application DLL. That means a 64-bit Windows installation can run the program, but Windows should not normally expect to find this file in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
The exact Money edition that originally installed this file is not established by a current Microsoft file manifest. Treat it as a Money-specific component and use the installer for the same Money edition whenever possible.

Microsoft Money is discontinued. Microsoft Q&A responses indicate that Money Plus Sunset was removed from current Microsoft download servers, so do not assume that a new official download is still available. Use original installation media or an installer you already obtained through a legitimate Microsoft source, and verify any archived installer before running it.

Which error are you seeing
The wording helps identify where the load process failed. Common variants include:
- “This application failed to start because dtsrcfle.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because dtsrcfle.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading dtsrcfle.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library dtsrcfle.dll.”
- “dtsrcfle.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Cannot register dtsrcfle.dll.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing.
A missing or not found message usually means Money’s installation is incomplete, the file was deleted, or the program was copied from another computer without being installed properly.
“The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by dtsrcfle.dll is missing. Replacing only the named file may therefore leave the real problem untouched.
A procedure entry point error usually indicates that the DLL and the program are from incompatible builds. An invalid or not designed to run message can indicate corruption, a wrong-architecture file, or a modified file.

First confirm that Microsoft Money is the program showing the error. If another application is requesting dtsrcfle.dll, do not assume that copying Money’s DLL into that application’s folder is safe.
Before repairing Money, back up your data
Repairing an application normally preserves its data, but uninstalling, resetting, or reinstalling can change settings and file associations. Protect your Money files first.
- Close Microsoft Money.
- Open File Explorer with
Windows + E. - Search your user folders for:
*.mny*.mbf- Copy the results to an external drive or another folder that is not part of the Money installation.
- If Money still opens, use its own backup command as well, if available.
- Do not overwrite the backup while testing repairs.
The .mny file is typically the active Money data file. .mbf files are Money backup files. Keep the originals unchanged until Money opens successfully and the data has been checked.

Fix 1: Repair Microsoft Money from Windows
Try the built-in repair path before uninstalling anything.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Money.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and launch Money.
Not every traditional desktop program exposes the Advanced options or Repair button. If Windows displays a repair process, it may restore missing application files without removing your Money data.
Control Panel
If the Settings route is unavailable:
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select Microsoft Money in Programs and Features.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart the computer and try Money again.
If Money starts after the repair, open your backed-up data file or use the normal Money file-open command. Check that accounts and transactions appear before deleting any old installation files.
Fix 2: Reinstall the same Microsoft Money edition
If no Repair option exists, reinstalling the complete application is the most reliable fix. This restores the executable, dtsrcfle.dll, and any related Money DLLs together.
- Locate the original Money CD, setup files, or a properly verified installer.
- Confirm that it matches the Money edition and language previously used.
- Keep your
.mnyand.mbfbackups outside the installation folder. - Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select Microsoft Money.
- Choose Uninstall only after confirming that your data is backed up.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the trusted installer as an administrator.
- Start Money once before opening your old data file.
- Open the backed-up
.mnyfile and confirm that it loads.
Do not copy the program folder from another PC. An installed desktop application may depend on registry entries, configuration files, shared components, and a matching set of DLLs. Copying one DLL or an entire folder can produce a different error while leaving the installation incomplete.
If you do not have installation media, be cautious with archived installers. Microsoft’s current Money download availability is limited, and a search result claiming to offer “the official DLL” is not proof that the file is genuine.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security Protection history
Microsoft Defender may have removed or quarantined a genuine old application file. Do not restore it automatically. First establish that it came from your legitimate Money installer.

- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Select a detection related to Microsoft Money, if present.
- Read the file path and detection details.
- If the file came from a trusted Money installation, scan the installer and the computer before considering Restore or Allow on device.
If the file was downloaded from an unknown DLL site, do not allow it merely because its filename is correct. Remove the untrusted file and reinstall Money from legitimate media instead.
After a legitimate restore, restart Windows and test Money. If Defender quarantines the file again, leave it quarantined until the detection is investigated. Repeated detections can indicate an altered installer, a damaged file, or malware.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also malfunctioning
dtsrcfle.dll appears to be an application DLL, not a protected Windows system file. Therefore, System File Checker is not the primary way to recreate it. Run Windows component repair when you also have failed Windows updates, damaged built-in apps, installer failures, or broader system instability.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands complete.
- Test the Money installer and Microsoft Money again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command is expected to download or recreate a missing Money DLL.

If DISM or SFC reports that it could not complete repairs, restart and run the commands again from an elevated terminal. If the same failure continues, focus on Windows servicing or recovery rather than downloading dtsrcfle.dll.

A message naming dtsrcfle.dll does not prove that the file itself is absent. Money may be finding the file but failing to load a DLL that it needs.
Use the complete Money repair or reinstall first. Avoid downloading Visual C++ packages, DirectX, .NET, or unrelated runtimes unless the exact error names that component.

Also check the installation directory:
- Press
Windows + E. - Locate the Microsoft Money program folder.
- Look for
dtsrcfle.dllthere. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the Details and Digital Signatures tabs when available.
- Do not replace it with a file from another source just because the filename matches.
A file that exists but cannot load may be corrupted, blocked, the wrong build, or dependent on another missing Money component. Reinstalling the application as a matched set is safer than assembling DLLs manually.
Fix 6: Check compatibility and architecture
The available identification for dtsrcfle.dll points to a 32-bit Microsoft Money component. That is not inherently a problem on 64-bit Windows. Windows 11 and Windows 10 can run many 32-bit desktop programs through their compatibility subsystem.

- 64-bit Windows with a properly installed 32-bit Money program: generally expected to work.
- A random DLL from a different build: unsafe and potentially incompatible.
- A copied Money folder without installation: may lack required configuration or dependencies.
- A mismatched Money edition or language: may produce entry-point or load errors.
Do not place a replacement file in System32 or SysWOW64 to force Windows to find it. A 32-bit application normally searches its own installation directory first, and a global substitute can create version conflicts.
If the error began after moving Money to a new computer, install Money properly on the new computer, then copy only your backed-up .mny or .mbf data files.
Fix 7: Investigate drivers only when the error points to a driver
Graphics, chipset, storage, and audio drivers are not indicated by the available evidence for dtsrcfle.dll. Do not update drivers as a generic response to a Money DLL error.
Check Device Manager only if Money fails alongside hardware errors or Windows reports a driver fault:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
For a known faulty device, use the hardware manufacturer’s verified driver package rather than a random driver archive. Do not change Windows Features for this error. Enabling legacy components, DirectPlay, .NET features, or other optional Windows packages is not supported by evidence for dtsrcfle.dll unless a separate error explicitly identifies that feature.

What not to do
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, a modified file, the wrong architecture, or a build that does not match your Money installation. Even a clean file with the right name may not fix a missing dependency or damaged installer.
Use original Money media or a properly verified Money installer. If you already downloaded a replacement, delete it, scan the computer, and reinstall the application as a complete package.

Those directories contain Windows components and shared system files. dtsrcfle.dll is associated with Microsoft Money, so placing it globally is not the normal repair path and can cause another program to load an incompatible copy.
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that dtsrcfle.dll is a COM or ActiveX server that requires registration.
Running:
regsvr32 dtsrcfle.dll
will not restore a missing application file. It may instead report that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. Repair Money through its installer.
Do not use registry cleaners
A registry cleaner cannot reliably reconstruct a damaged Money installation and may remove information that an older desktop program needs. Repair or reinstall the owning application instead.

Work through this escalation checklist:
- Confirm the error is produced by Microsoft Money, not another executable.
- Confirm that the correct Money edition is installed.
- Check the Money installation folder for the file.
- Check Windows Security Protection history.
- Repair or reinstall Money from trusted media.
- Run DISM and SFC only if Windows itself shows corruption or installers fail.
- Open Event Viewer:
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Check errors recorded at the time Money failed.
- Note the faulting application and faulting module.
- Test Money with a clean Windows user profile to rule out damaged per-user settings.
- Consider System Restore only if the issue clearly began after a system change:
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem.
- Review the affected programs before confirming.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, installed programs, and settings. It is not a replacement for backing up personal Money data.
If Money launches but a .mny file will not open, stop treating that as a DLL problem. The data file may be incompatible with the installed Money edition or may be damaged. Try a known-good backup copy and keep the original untouched.
Finally, Money Plus Sunset and similar releases cannot restore discontinued online banking, activation, or other services. A successful DLL repair can restore local application startup, but it cannot bring discontinued online services back.
