ymsgip.dll is a Yahoo Messenger application DLL, not a Windows system file. If Windows reports that ymsgip.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is to repair the original Yahoo Messenger installation or remove the obsolete program and its startup references.
Do not download a loose copy of the file and place it in System32. Yahoo Messenger was discontinued in 2018, so there is no current supported Yahoo Messenger installer to recommend. Use original installation media, a trusted backup, or a known-good system image if the legacy application is genuinely required.

What ymsgip.dll is
Public file inventories identify the file as Ymsgip, published by Yahoo, and associated with Yahoo Messenger variants including AT&T Yahoo Messenger and SBC Yahoo Messenger. It was normally installed inside the program’s own directory rather than in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Reported identification details include:
- Filename:
ymsgip.dll - Internal description:
Ymsgip - Product: Yahoo Ymsgip
- Publisher: Yahoo
- Architecture: Win32, or 32-bit
- Reported version:
3.0.0.5 - Reported size: about 164 KB, or 167,936 bytes
- Reported copyright range: Yahoo, 2000–2003
Treat the version and size as clues, not as a universal fingerprint. Different Yahoo Messenger releases and branded editions may have used different builds. A matching filename alone does not prove that a file is authentic.

Because it is a 32-bit application component, it belongs beside the 32-bit program that loads it. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the 64-bit system directory and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit Windows components. Neither is the normal destination for this Yahoo DLL.
Start by identifying the caller
Before repairing anything, determine which program is requesting the file. The same error can be caused by a remaining Yahoo Messenger installation, a broken shortcut, a startup entry, or a scheduled task left behind after removal.
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because ymsgip.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because ymsgip.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading ymsgip.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load ymsgip.dll.”
- “The file ymsgip.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: ymsgip.dll. Please install the application again.”
These are common reported variants rather than an official exhaustive list.
Check the error context
Note when the message appears:
- Immediately after signing in to Windows
- When opening a Yahoo Messenger shortcut
- When launching an unrelated program
- After antivirus cleanup
- After restoring a backup
- After uninstalling Yahoo Messenger
If it appears only during startup and no longer-used Yahoo software is involved, removing the stale startup entry is usually the correct repair. If it appears when launching Messenger itself, restore the complete original application instead of replacing one DLL.
Check the executable path
If a shortcut produces the error:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Check Target and Start in.
- Look for a Yahoo Messenger directory or an unexpected temporary folder.
- Select Open File Location if available.
A legitimate old installation should normally have a coherent application directory containing its executable and supporting files. A reference from a temporary folder, random user-profile directory, or unfamiliar program deserves a malware scan and closer investigation.
Fix 1: Restore or reinstall the original Yahoo Messenger package
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on the installer or backup
This is the most likely solution when the application is still needed. A missing DLL usually means the program directory is incomplete, not that Windows needs a replacement system file.
If you have the original installer
- Disconnect from untrusted download sources and locate the original Yahoo Messenger installer.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if one is present.
- Review the signer and file details.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair if the installer offers that option.
- If repair is unavailable, uninstall the damaged copy first, then run the installer again.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the program from its newly installed shortcut.
Do not assume that an installer for one Yahoo Messenger variant can repair another. AT&T Yahoo Messenger, SBC Yahoo Messenger, and other branded editions may not contain identical files.
If the program is still listed in Windows
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Yahoo Messenger, AT&T Yahoo Messenger, or SBC Yahoo Messenger.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the entry.
- Choose Advanced options if available, then Repair or Reset.
- If those options do not exist, select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall from original media or restore the complete application from a trusted backup.
On older Windows interfaces:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the Yahoo Messenger entry.
- Choose Repair or Change if offered.
- Otherwise choose Uninstall.
If the installer restores ymsgip.dll but the error remains, the message may refer to another dependency. Do not keep copying DLLs individually. Recheck the application directory and use the installer’s log or Windows Event Viewer to identify the next missing module.
If you have a system image or backup
Restore the complete original application directory, not only ymsgip.dll. Mixing a DLL from one Yahoo Messenger release with executables and support files from another can create new load errors.
A full system image restoration is appropriate only when you understand what else will be rolled back. For a single legacy application, recovering the original program folder and installer is usually safer.
Fix 2: Remove Yahoo Messenger and its leftover startup entry
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
If you no longer use Yahoo Messenger, removing the caller is safer than trying to keep obsolete software running.

- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for Yahoo Messenger and its branded variants.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstaller.
- Restart Windows.
If no entry appears:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Check the traditional Programs and Features list.
- Remove any Yahoo Messenger entry that remains.
Do not delete the program folder first. The uninstaller may need that folder to remove services, shortcuts, or configuration entries correctly.
Disable a broken startup entry
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Yahoo Messenger or an unknown entry whose path points into the Yahoo Messenger directory.
- Right-click it.
- Select Disable.
- Restart Windows and check whether the error returns.
You can also check:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Startup.
- Turn off any confirmed Yahoo Messenger entry.
Check Task Scheduler
A scheduled task can launch a missing program even when Task Manager shows no startup item.
- Press the Windows key.
- Search for Task Scheduler.
- Open it.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks whose names or actions mention Yahoo Messenger.
- Double-click a suspicious task.
- Open the Actions tab.
- Confirm the executable path.
- If it clearly points to removed Yahoo software, right-click the task and select Disable.
- Delete it only after confirming it is obsolete.
For advanced cleanup, Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns can reveal additional startup locations, but do not remove entries merely because their names are unfamiliar. Confirm the executable path first.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may have quarantined the file. This can happen after a cleanup operation, a restored backup, or a false-positive detection.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Search for
ymsgip.dllor the Yahoo Messenger installation directory. - Open the detection details.
- Check the original path and the reason for quarantine.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:
- The original path belongs to a known Yahoo Messenger installation.
- The program came from original media, a trusted backup, or a known-good system image.
- The security product identifies the detection as a false positive.
- A current scan does not find other suspicious files in the same directory.
Do not disable antivirus protection simply to force the DLL into a program folder. If the file was detected in a temporary directory or an unexpected user-profile location, remove the associated software and run a full scan instead.
Fix 4: Check the file’s path, signature, and architecture
Time needed: 10 minutes
This step helps distinguish a missing authentic application file from a counterfeit file reference.
Check the path
If a copy exists:
- Right-click
ymsgip.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the General tab.
- Record the full location.
- Open Details.
- Check the description, product name, publisher, and reported version.
A file inside the original Yahoo Messenger directory is more plausible than one in System32, SysWOW64, a temporary folder, or an unrelated game directory.
Check for a digital signature
- In the same Properties window, open Digital Signatures.
- Select the listed signer.
- Choose Details.
- Confirm whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.
Older software may not have a signature that modern Windows can validate. An absent signature does not by itself prove malware, but it means the file must be judged by its source, location, matching application files, and antivirus results.
Check the architecture
A 32-bit Yahoo Messenger process needs 32-bit dependencies. On 64-bit Windows, do not copy the file into a Windows system directory to solve an application-level dependency. The correct location is normally the directory of the 32-bit program that loads it.
If you use a dependency-analysis utility, inspect the application executable and ymsgip.dll together. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that ymsgip.dll exists but one of its dependent modules is absent.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
ymsgip.dll is a Yahoo application file, so System File Checker does not normally restore it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows shows broader corruption, several unrelated applications fail, or Windows repair tools report damaged protected components.

- Run:
sfc /scannow

If you prefer a guided diagnostic, Outbyte PC Repair can perform a free scan that shows reported problems, while repair is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the original Yahoo Messenger package remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
When System Restore is appropriate
Use System Restore only when:
- The error began immediately after a recent software change.
- A restore point exists from before the change.
- You understand that drivers, applications, and settings installed afterward may be rolled back.
To open it:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the failure.
- Review affected programs.
- Complete the restoration and restart.
System Restore is not a source for an authentic standalone Yahoo DLL. It is also not useful when the application was already obsolete or absent before the available restore points.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 6: Install a runtime only when the error names it
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
There is no evidence that ymsgip.dll is itself a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file. Do not install random runtime packages just because a Yahoo DLL is missing.
Consider Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only when:
- The error separately names
MSVCR*.dllorVCRUNTIME*.dll. - The original application installer explicitly requires it.
- A dependency check identifies a missing Microsoft runtime.
Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads are architecture-specific. A 32-bit application needs the x86 package even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Install only the package identified by the application or dependency check, restart Windows, and test again. Installing x64 packages alone does not satisfy a 32-bit program’s x86 dependency.
Fix 7: Update a related driver only when diagnostics point to one
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A graphics, audio, network, or chipset driver is not a likely source of ymsgip.dll. Do not update drivers as a reflex when an old Yahoo application reports its own missing file.
If Event Viewer or a dependency check identifies a separate driver problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider and version.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If Windows cannot find an appropriate driver, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page and match the exact model and Windows architecture. Do not use a driver package to replace ymsgip.dll.
When manually hunting through hardware pages and comparing driver versions is the actual problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can provide a free scan showing reported driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling Yahoo Messenger when that is the real caller.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is commonly used with certain COM and ActiveX components.
A normal application-support DLL is not automatically a self-registering component. Running:
regsvr32 ymsgip.dll
will not restore missing dependencies, repair a damaged Yahoo installation, or place the file in the correct directory. It may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found.”
Only use regsvr32 when the application vendor specifically documents that the particular DLL must be registered and confirms the correct bitness and path. For this file, reinstalling or removing the parent application is the appropriate approach.

Why downloading ymsgip.dll is unsafe
A loose DLL from a random download page can:
- Contain malware or unwanted modifications.
- Have the wrong Yahoo Messenger build.
- Have the wrong architecture.
- Require other missing dependencies.
- Fail because the application expects matching support files.
- Create a misleading startup or security problem.
- Leave the original damaged installation untouched.
Never copy it to System32 or `SysWOW64 as a general fix. A DLL belongs beside the application that loads it unless the application’s own installer specifies another location.
The safe sources are original Yahoo Messenger installation media, a trusted personal backup, or a known-good system image. There is no current official Yahoo page offering a supported standalone ymsgip.dll package or a current Yahoo Messenger repair installer.
What the root cause usually is
The likely causes, in practical order, are:
| Cause | What you see | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Partial removal or damaged installation | Yahoo files remain, but the DLL is absent | Uninstall completely or restore the original package |
| Antivirus quarantine | The file disappeared after a security event | Review quarantine and restore only a trusted false positive |
| Stale startup entry | Error appears at sign-in, not when launching an app | Disable or remove the confirmed Yahoo entry |
| Incomplete backup restoration | Other old application files are also absent | Restore the complete application directory or image |
| Missing dependency | The DLL exists, but Windows says a module cannot be found | Inspect dependencies and reinstall the original package |
| Windows corruption | Several unrelated programs fail | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Counterfeit or unwanted reference | The path is unexpected or the caller is unknown | Scan the system and investigate the calling executable |
The exact Yahoo Messenger release cannot be determined from the filename alone. A reported version, size, or publisher entry can support identification, but it is not a substitute for a trusted source or cryptographic verification.
If the error remains after reinstalling
Work through these checks:
- Confirm that the error names the same executable you repaired.
- Check the shortcut’s target and working directory.
- Search Task Manager Startup apps and Task Scheduler for stale launchers.
- Check antivirus quarantine again.
- Inspect the application directory for other missing DLLs.
- Review Event Viewer:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Check entries created at the time of the failure.
- Use a dependency-analysis tool on the Yahoo executable and its DLLs.
- Remove the legacy application if no trusted complete installer is available.
If the message appears for an unrelated modern program, do not assume that program legitimately needs Yahoo Messenger. A counterfeit file reference or unwanted startup item may be involved. Verify the caller’s path and publisher before restoring anything.

FAQ
Is ymsgip.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with Yahoo Messenger software and is not a normal Windows component.
Is ymsgip.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Reported inventories identify it as Win32, or 32-bit. It should normally be used by the 32-bit Yahoo application that installed it.
Is the file from Yahoo Messenger?
Most likely, especially when the error appears while launching Yahoo Messenger or at startup on a system that once used it. AT&T Yahoo Messenger and SBC Yahoo Messenger are also associated with the file. The filename alone cannot identify the exact release.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. That is not the normal location for this application DLL and can create version, architecture, and security problems.
Will SFC restore it?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while ymsgip.dll is a third-party Yahoo application file.
Does installing Visual C++ fix it?
Not normally. Install a Visual C++ package only when another error identifies a missing Microsoft runtime or the original installer requires one.
Is regsvr32 ymsgip.dll a fix?
Usually no. The file is not automatically a COM or ActiveX server, and registration does not restore missing dependencies.
What if I no longer need Yahoo Messenger?
Uninstall it, disable its startup entries, and remove confirmed scheduled tasks that still point to it. This is safer than preserving obsolete software solely to silence a startup error.
What if I need the old application?
Use original media, a trusted backup, or a known-good system image. There is no current supported Yahoo Messenger distribution to recommend, so avoid loose DLL downloads and mismatched installers.
