Choose a DualSense controller if you want to play on a PS5 or another compatible host; choose a handheld if you want a gaming device with controls and a screen built in. They are not two versions of the same product: Sony’s official name is the DualSense wireless controller, while a PlayStation Portal streams compatible PS5 games and a Steam Deck OLED runs PC games as a handheld. The right fit depends chiefly on where your games run, what you already own, and whether you want to rely on a PS5 and Wi-Fi.
First, what does “DualSense 2.0” mean?
Sony’s official product material identifies the controller as the DualSense wireless controller; it does not establish “DualSense 2.0” as an official product name. This comparison therefore treats the phrase as a question about a separate controller versus a handheld gaming device—not as a matchup between two similarly named consoles.
A DualSense is an input device. It connects to a compatible host, such as a PS5, computer, or mobile device, and the host runs the game. A handheld such as Steam Deck OLED has its own screen and integrated controls. PlayStation Portal sits between those categories: it is a dedicated player for games streamed from a PS5 over Wi-Fi, with selected cloud-streaming features subject to Sony’s current requirements.
How the three options differ
| Option | Where the game runs | What you need | Best starting point |
|---|---|---|---|
| DualSense wireless controller | On a connected host, such as PS5 or a compatible computer or mobile device | A compatible host and a game that supports the desired controller features | You already play on a PS5 or compatible device and want a separate controller |
| PlayStation Portal | Usually on a paired PS5, streamed over Wi-Fi; selected cloud games may be available subject to current requirements | A PS5 and account for Remote Play, broadband Wi-Fi, or qualifying cloud-streaming access for eligible titles | You own a PS5 and want to play compatible games away from its TV |
| Steam Deck OLED | Locally on a handheld gaming PC running SteamOS | The handheld and games compatible with Steam Deck; check compatibility title by title | You want a portable PC form with integrated controls and access to your PC game library |
What you get with a DualSense controller
DualSense makes sense when you already have a device that runs the games you want to play. Sony lists USB-C and Bluetooth connections for compatible computers and mobile devices, as well as use with PS5. Feature availability depends on the game and platform; haptics and adaptive triggers are not guaranteed in every title or connection setup. Sony notes that some PC features may require a USB connection. Check Sony’s compatibility and feature details for the device and game you plan to use.

- Multi-device connectivity - Connect using a USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth technology and easily play on more devices including Windows PC and Mac computers.
- Elevate PC gaming with advanced features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in a range of blockbuster PC titles.
The controller’s distinctive features are tactile effects and variable trigger resistance. Sony described haptics as a way to convey sensations such as driving through mud, and adaptive triggers as a way to feel tension when drawing a bow. Those examples explain the design intent, not a promise that every game uses the effects equally.
As a controller, DualSense does not supply a screen, a game library, or a standalone way to run games. It can be the straightforward choice for a PS5 player who wants another controller; it does not replace a handheld when the goal is to play away from a host device.
What PlayStation Portal does—and what it does not
Portal is built around PS5 Remote Play. Compatible games installed on a paired PS5 are streamed to the device over Wi-Fi, allowing play away from the television while the PS5 remains the game-running host. Sony describes it as access to games on a PS5 over Wi-Fi, not as a portable console that independently runs a PS5 library.

Sony lists an 8-inch LCD and streaming up to 1080p at 60 frames per second. Those are product capabilities, not a guarantee of actual image quality or frame rate: results can vary with the game and network. Portal retains DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers in games that support them.

Network and access requirements
Sony’s current Portal FAQ says broadband Wi-Fi of at least 5 Mbps is required and recommends 15 Mbps or more for a better experience. A stronger connection does not guarantee a fixed result, since connection quality can vary. Remote Play requires a PS5 and account; see Sony’s Portal requirements and current FAQ before relying on a particular setup.
Cloud streaming is a separate, changeable option
Sony also lists cloud streaming for a changing selection of eligible games, with PlayStation Plus Premium and other current service, regional, and title requirements applying. Do not assume that every PS5 game can be streamed directly to Portal without a PS5, or that availability is identical across regions. Confirm the current Portal page and the eligibility of the specific game before buying for cloud play.

- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
What Steam Deck OLED adds
Steam Deck OLED is a portable gaming PC rather than a controller or a PS5 streaming screen. It has integrated controls, trackpads, gyro, and SteamOS, so it can run compatible PC games on the device. Valve lists 512 GB and 1 TB NVMe SSD configurations and microSD expansion; the exact storage option depends on the model sold.
Valve’s current specifications list a 7.4-inch, 1280 × 800 OLED display with a refresh rate up to 90 Hz, 16 GB of RAM, and a 50 Wh battery. Valve estimates 3–12 hours of gameplay, with actual battery life dependent on use. The listed mass is approximately 640 g. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results.

Which fits your play style?
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Playing PS5 games on a television with a separate controller | DualSense | It is a PS5 controller with haptics and adaptive triggers in supported games. |
| Playing compatible PS5 games away from the television | PlayStation Portal | It streams from a paired PS5 over Wi-Fi and retains supported DualSense features. |
| A portable device with integrated controls that runs PC games | Steam Deck OLED | It is a handheld PC with SteamOS and built-in controls. |
| Less reliance on owning a PS5 or using Remote Play | Investigate local-play handhelds such as Steam Deck | Portal’s core Remote Play use depends on a PS5 and Wi-Fi; Steam Deck is a portable PC, though game compatibility still varies by title. |
| Buying mainly for haptics or adaptive triggers | Compare the games and platform you will actually use | DualSense and Portal offer those features only where the game and platform support them; Portal also depends on its streaming role. |
Check before you buy
- Start with your games. List the titles you intend to play and identify where each runs: PS5, PC, or both. A controller does not provide games, and the Portal and Steam Deck do not access identical libraries.
- Account for devices you own. If you have a PS5 and want another way to play its compatible games, Portal has a clear role. If you already have a gaming PC or Steam library, assess the Deck against the compatibility of your specific titles.
- Check your connection for Portal. Compare your Wi-Fi conditions with Sony’s stated minimum and recommendation, and remember that real connection quality can fluctuate.
- Choose the control format you want. DualSense is a separate controller; Portal and Steam Deck have built-in controls and displays. Steam Deck also includes trackpads and gyro, while Portal emphasizes a familiar DualSense-style setup.
- Compare the complete cost. Include the device or controller, any host hardware you still need, game purchases, and any subscription required for the feature you intend to use. The relevant requirements differ, especially for Portal cloud streaming.
Is Portal worth it if you already have a Steam Deck OLED?
Only if you have a distinct use for PS5 Remote Play or Portal’s eligible cloud-streaming option. The Portal is not an upgrade to a Steam Deck for PC games: it serves PS5 streaming, while the Deck is a handheld PC. Portal’s supported DualSense effects may matter if the games you play use them, but that feature alone does not erase the difference in game source, network dependence, or device role. If your priority is your Steam library and local handheld play, Portal adds a second use case rather than replacing the Deck.
Verdict
There is no universal winner because these products solve different problems. Choose DualSense for a compatible host that already runs your games, Portal for PS5 play streamed away from the TV, and Steam Deck OLED for a handheld PC experience. Let your library, existing hardware, and tolerance for network dependence decide the fit—not the misleading impression that “DualSense 2.0” names a competing handheld.
