Where can I see ducks near me?
Look for nearby national wildlife refuges, state wildlife areas, marshes, and wetlands with public access. Search the official site for visitor information, maps, wildlife drives, overlooks, and recent sightings. A location roundup can suggest places to investigate, but the site’s own page is the better source for current access and closures.
The refuges below offer examples of different ways to watch ducks. They are not a complete list or a national ranking; choose based on your location, travel distance, access, and the refuge’s current conditions.
DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge
DeSoto, on the Iowa–Nebraska border, offers viewing windows at its visitor center, an auto tour route, and the Bob Starr Wildlife Overlook. The refuge says typical peak waterfowl movement occurs in November and again in early March. Check its visitor activities page and visitor information for its map, sighting board, and current route or seasonal-access details.

Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge
In Oregon’s Willamette Valley, Ankeny’s Rail Trail Boardwalk loops by Wood Duck Pond; Eagle Marsh and Pintail Marsh are other birding areas. The refuge gives mid-March through mid-May as its spring migration window and September through November as its fall window. It notes that most waterfowl can be found on wetlands along the auto tour route. Malheur National Wildlife Refuge
In southeastern Oregon, Malheur lists several birding locations, including Refuge Headquarters, Buena Vista Ponds, Krumbo Reservoir, Benson Pond, Knox Ponds, Historic P Ranch, and Historic Sod House Ranch. The Sod House Ranch has a seasonal opening window, so check the refuge’s birding and activities page for current access before planning around it. Malheur recommends early morning or late evening for observation and says a vehicle can serve as a blind.

When is the best time to watch ducks?
Use local migration guidance rather than assuming there is one best month across the country. DeSoto describes typical peak waterfowl movement in November and early March, while Ankeny identifies broader spring and fall windows. These dates are refuge-specific guidance, not guarantees that ducks will be present on a particular day. Weather, water conditions, and recent movement can affect what visitors see.
Check the refuge’s current reports or sighting board shortly before traveling. If the location publishes no recent sightings, treat seasonal dates as a planning aid rather than a promise of a particular species or viewing experience.

Compare sites using practical trip details, not an assumed ranking of how many ducks they hold.
- Distance and geography: Start with places within a realistic travel range.
- Access: Confirm current hours, fees, route availability, and seasonal closures on the official page.
- Viewing format: Decide whether a boardwalk, overlook, visitor-center window, or auto tour route best suits your visit.
- Season and sightings: Use that refuge’s migration guidance and the latest available sighting information.
- Accessibility and equipment: Look for accessible viewing options and ask whether loaner binoculars are available.
How to watch ducks without disturbing them
Use designated viewing areas and stay on open routes. Observe quietly, be patient, and follow posted instructions or closures. At Ankeny, refuge guidance recommends quiet observation; Malheur advises that remaining in a vehicle where possible can help avoid scaring wildlife. When driving, stop only in legal designated viewing areas and do not obstruct traffic.

What to bring for duck watching
