To recruit a character who is not granted through the story, collect 10 Secret Letter Clues, exchange them for that character’s Secret Letter, then complete its Character Covert Commission and choose character-specific Thoughts. The reported unlock threshold is 30 Thoughts for that character. Letter locations and rewards rotate, so check the target’s current in-game source before you spend time farming.
First check whether the story unlocks your target
Most characters are described as unlocking through main-story progression; Secret Letters are the route for characters outside that path. Epic Games Store’s progression guide, published October 28, 2025, also describes Thoughts as a way to unlock characters and improve them. Since a character’s route can vary, check the current in-game information for your specific target rather than assuming it is Letter-only.
How the Secret Letter unlock loop works
- Earn Secret Letter Clues. Story progress and major side quests are reported early sources. Daily and weekly objectives and endgame activities such as Mystic Maze and Immersive Theater have also been reported as repeatable sources. Exact payouts and schedules can change, so use the activity rewards shown in your current game.
- Exchange 10 clues for a Secret Letter. Epic Games Store and Prima Games both reported this exchange in guides published October 28, 2025. Confirm the current cost and available Letters in the live game.
- Choose the target’s Character Letter and run its Covert Commission. Epic’s 2025 guide describes separate Character, Weapon, and Demon Wedge commission categories. Choose the Character option for character Thoughts; the other categories do not serve that purpose.
- Select a useful reward and repeat. The 2025 guide says a cleared commission offers three items from the selected Letter’s pool, from which you choose one. Character Thoughts are chance-based, so a run may not offer the Thoughts you need.
- Redeem 30 character-specific Thoughts. Epic’s guide gives 30 Thoughts as the reported threshold for a new character. Once you have enough for your target, redeem them through the game’s character interface.
These numbers and reward details come from launch-era 2025 guides, not a guarantee that every current Letter uses unchanged mechanics. Check the game’s displayed requirements and reward pool before committing clues or a run.
Where to get clues, and what not to assume
Story and major side quests are useful places to begin. Once repeatable activities are available, check daily and weekly objectives and endgame modes including Mystic Maze and Immersive Theater for their current clue rewards. Their schedules and payouts are version-dependent.

Older launch guides published specific activity rewards, rollout schedules, and drop-rate claims. Those are historical snapshots, not dependable current farming figures. In particular, a 2025 guide’s reported 10% chance for gold-tier rewards should not be treated as a verified current rate.
Find the target’s current Letter source
Secret Letter availability changes. Later version notes on the official Duet Night Abyss App Store listing record changes involving Immersive Theater, Nocturnal Echoes, and the permanent Secret Letter Shop. They establish that routes and rotations can change, but do not provide a complete current roster or location list.

Before farming, inspect the target character’s Letter or the relevant in-game event and shop notices. A Letter may be available through limited rewards, weekly boss rewards, or a permanent exchange, but which route applies depends on the current rotation. Do not rely on an old character list or launch schedule to decide where to spend clues.
Choose a route based on your progress
| Route | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Story progression | A character granted along the main-story route | The target’s current in-game unlock information; do not assume every named character is story-granted. |
| Secret Letter farming | A character outside your story route, or a target whose Letter is currently accessible | Clue sources, the target’s current Letter availability, commission requirements, and displayed reward choices. |
| Permanent shop exchange | A target whose Letter is listed in the permanent Secret Letter Shop | Whether the target is currently listed and the exchange terms shown in-game. |
The guide’s 2025 account also described Covert Commissions as level 40 content with objectives rotating hourly. Treat those as historical operational details and check the current commission screen for access and objective timing.

Are characters locked behind a purchase?
The official App Store launch listing stated, “All characters and weapons are free to unlock.” That is launch-announcement wording, not a live roster or availability table. For the unlock route described here, the relevant steps are story progress or in-game Letter and Thought systems; do not confuse optional cosmetics with character recruitment.
