Choose the School whose combat style sounds enjoyable: Trooper for ranged weapons and explosives, Swordmaster for close combat, Bene Gesserit for mobility and control, or Mentat for tactical devices. Funcom’s 2025 beginner FAQ described those four as the initial choices, with trainers enabling players to mix abilities across Schools later. Planetologist was described as a later trainer unlock, not a character-creation option, so check the current in-game screen for any changes.
Which starting class should you choose?
Funcom calls these character paths “Schools” in its School showcases and “archetypes” in its broader overview. The official overview describes each School by a broad role, while the 2025 ability showcases provide examples rather than a comparative ranking. The choice below is therefore a playstyle recommendation, not a claim about which School wins more often or is easiest to master.
| Starting School | Best fit | Showcased strengths | What the sources do not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trooper | Ranged weapons, explosives, and technology | Funcom’s May 16, 2025 showcase describes the Shigawire Claw for movement and staggering, an Anti-gravity Field that can lift enemies or prevent fall damage, and improved disruptor damage. | The showcase does not quantify damage, cooldowns, defensive weaknesses, or current-patch balance. |
| Swordmaster | Close-quarters combat and disciplined fighting | Funcom’s May 30, 2025 showcase describes Knee Charge for closing distance and staggering, Deflection for temporarily deflecting incoming ranged projectiles, and Eye of the Storm for damaging nearby opponents. | These examples do not establish current PvP superiority or how easy the School is to learn. |
| Bene Gesserit | Mobility, target control, and resilience | Funcom’s May 12, 2025 showcase describes Bindu Sprint for a burst of speed, Compel for pulling a target after a short registration period, and Recovery for increasing health regeneration after severe injury. | The post does not quantify counters, cooldowns, or matchups; Compel should not be treated as guaranteed crowd control. |
| Mentat | Tactical devices and area control | Funcom’s May 22, 2025 showcase describes the Sentinel, a motion-detecting dart projector; Poison Capsule, which creates a poison cloud; and Shield Wall, which provides cover and slows enemies trying to cross it. | The showcase does not provide current comparative damage or ease-of-use figures. |
How each starting School plays
Trooper: ranged firepower and demolition
Choose Trooper if you want your starting identity to center on ranged weapons, explosives, and technology. The showcased tools suggest a mix of disruption and movement utility, but they are examples of abilities, not proof that Trooper is the strongest option in a particular mode or patch.
Swordmaster: commit to close combat
Swordmaster suits players who want to fight at close range. Knee Charge offers an approach-and-stagger example, while Deflection and Eye of the Storm illustrate defensive and nearby-damage tools. The showcase does not establish how those abilities perform against every opponent or in the current balance environment.

Bene Gesserit: movement and control
Bene Gesserit is the natural fit if you are drawn to physical mastery and mental manipulation. Bindu Sprint highlights movement, Compel offers a way to pull a target, and Recovery provides a resilience example after severe injury. Those descriptions alone do not show how reliable the control is against different targets.
Mentat: gadgets and tactical positioning
Mentat is aimed at reconnaissance and strategy. Its showcased devices point toward monitoring movement, creating a poison cloud, and shaping an approach with cover. Pick it if planning around tactical tools sounds more appealing than specializing first in ranged firepower or direct melee.

Planetologist is a later School, not one of the four listed starting choices
Funcom’s June 9, 2025 Planetologist showcase says the School is not available in character creation and is learned later through a trainer. Its broad role is traversal and cartography; showcased examples include Cartographer sinkcharts, increased dew yield, and a Suspensor Pad for traversal. Funcom also describes the School in terms of harvesting, vehicle maintenance, and water discipline. Because this progression information comes from a 2025 post, confirm the current client’s character-creation options and trainer path before relying on it.
Your first choice is a starting direction, not necessarily a permanent build
Funcom’s Large-Scale Beta Weekend FAQ described four initial choices—Trooper, Bene Gesserit, Mentat, and Swordmaster—and said trainers would let players combine abilities across archetypes. The FAQ’s wording was, “At launch, you can find trainers that allow you to start mixing and matching abilities across these archetypes.” That is launch-era guidance from 2025, not confirmation of today’s exact progression rules; the current client is the authority if the system has changed.

Is any class objectively best for beginners?
The official material cited here does not provide current win rates, a balance ranking, or a quantified comparison of difficulty. It supports choosing by the role and abilities that appeal to you, not declaring a universal winner. Historical beta selection percentages would not establish present-day popularity or strength, so they are not a sound basis for a tier list.
