Dungeons 4 is a well-regarded, familiar-feeling strategy sequel: critics generally enjoy its dungeon-building and management, but some find its overworld combat underdeveloped and its changes from Dungeons 3 incremental. It is most appealing if you want more of the series’ established dungeon loop, not a major reinvention.
What the review scores say
On Metacritic’s PC critic page, Dungeons 4 has a 74 Metascore from 12 reviews, captured October 8, 2026: seven are positive, five mixed, and none negative. Metacritic’s product page shows a 7.8 user score from 30 ratings on the same date. That user-rating sample is small, so treat it as an indication rather than a broad consensus. Steam’s listing showed 84% positive from 1,209 English-language reviews on October 8, 2026. Its separate recent-review snapshot was 73% positive from 23 reviews. These figures use different samples and rating systems from Metacritic’s, and the recent-review window can change. They describe review sentiment, not sales or the size of the player base. What critics like about Dungeons 4
The dungeon-management loop
Positive reviews describe an enjoyable dungeon manager and RTS built around managing resources and developing a dungeon. TheGamer’s review highlights the resource-management emphasis and challenge; GameSpace calls it a strong return for the series. Those are individual outlet assessments, but they reflect the sequel’s clearest strength: giving players a satisfying continuation of its established management formula. Metacritic critic reviews

Approachable strategy and humor
Some critics find the strategy accessible and the humor effective. Neither response is universal: the game’s tone is part of its appeal for some reviewers, while others consider the writing or jokes dated or less successful.
What reviewers criticize
Familiarity rather than reinvention
Several reviews describe Dungeons 4 as iterative compared with Dungeons 3. That is not necessarily a problem if you want more of the same dungeon-management style, but it matters if your priority is a substantially new set of mechanics.

Overworld combat and presentation
Reviewers also criticize the overworld’s RTS combat as underdeveloped or primitive, and some point to visual clutter. If battles outside the dungeon are a major part of what you want from a strategy game, these reservations deserve particular weight. Metacritic critic reviews
Is Dungeons 4 worth playing?
It is a reasonable choice for players who enjoy building and managing a dungeon and are comfortable with a sequel that refines a familiar formula. The case is weaker if you expect a major departure from Dungeons 3, polished or deep overworld battles, or humor that reliably lands for every player. The available reviews point to a split in emphasis, not a single feature that will suit everyone.

Dungeons 4 vs. Dungeons 3: what to compare
Reviews characterize Dungeons 4 as iterative, but the available evidence does not establish a controlled, feature-by-feature comparison. If you are deciding between the two, consider what matters most to you:
- Dungeon building and management: Is continuing the series’ central loop enough, or are you looking for a substantial mechanical change?
- Overworld battles: How important is satisfying RTS combat outside the dungeon?
- Novelty: Would a familiar sequel feel welcome or too similar?
- Humor and writing: Reviews differ on whether the tone works.
- Platform features: Check the listing for the version you plan to play rather than assuming every platform has the same options.
