Dune: Awakening is an open-world survival adventure set on Arrakis, built around exploration, crafting and a cinematic story alongside persistent-world social hubs, politics and conflict. Funcom describes it as a survival game with MMO aspects—not simply a conventional theme-park MMO. Solo play has since been reported as an option, so the original shared-world premise is no longer the only way to approach it.

What kind of game is Dune: Awakening?

Funcom frames Dune: Awakening as an open-world multiplayer survival game with MMO aspects. Its official description brings together survival and crafting, exploration, a cinematic story, persistent-world social hubs, politics and conflict. Steam similarly categorizes it as open-world survival, adventure and RPG gameplay. That combination matters: the game’s identity rests on both surviving Arrakis and encountering a world shaped by other players.

That makes “MMO” a useful shorthand for its persistent shared-world elements, but not a complete genre label. Funcom’s own support description is more specific about the survival-game foundation. The PC release arrived on Steam on June 10, 2025.

Can you play Dune: Awakening solo?

Yes, according to coverage of Update 1.5, which reported the addition of solo play, difficulty presets and adjustable settings. That coverage also described changes to systems that had previously relied on other players. These details distinguish the newer solo path from the game’s original shared-world proposition; they are reported update details rather than the result of a hands-on check here.

#1 Best Overall
Dune: Awakening - PlayStation 5
  • Step into the world of Dune and explore an immersive, open world Arrakis, from sandworm-infested deserts to the sprawling city of Arrakeen
  • Experience a unique, cinematic Dune story that gives clear meaning and purpose to your otherwise freeform survival crafting journey
  • From the slow blade to epic firepower, train and progress as a Swordmaster, Bene Gesserit, Trooper, and Mentat to unlock their signature weapons and abilities
  • Rise from survival to greatness as you grow your own piece of Arrakis from a modest crafting base into a sprawling fortress, or secure your fortune by chasing spice blows and running your own spice-refining operation
  • Play single-player and customize every aspect of your experience, or go online to team up with friends on private or public multiplayer servers

For a player deciding whether the game’s structure fits, the key question is how much of the appeal comes from Arrakis itself and how much comes from a persistent world with other people. Solo support broadens the options, but the official game description still emphasizes social hubs, politics and conflict as part of its design.

Platforms and PC requirements

The Steam listing documents the PC release. Funcom’s official announcement feed reports that PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions launched on September 22, 2026. Console availability can vary by region and storefront, so check the relevant live store listing before buying.

Who should consider Dune: Awakening?

The strongest fit is a player drawn to survival crafting and exploration in the Dune universe, and willing to engage with a persistent-world design. Solo support may suit someone who prefers a more individual route, while players interested in social hubs, politics and conflict may be more attracted to the shared-world side.

  • Survival-crafting appetite: The official genre framing puts survival and crafting at the center, rather than presenting the game solely as a story-driven adventure.
  • Play style: Solo play is reported as an option after Update 1.5; the original design also includes persistent-world multiplayer systems.
  • Setting: The game is set in Frank Herbert’s Dune universe, with Arrakis as its world.
  • Platform: PC is available through Steam; the official feed reports PS5 and Xbox Series X|S launches in September 2026.
  • PC readiness: Compare your system with the published minimum and recommended specifications above, while treating them as requirements rather than performance guarantees.

Verdict

Dune: Awakening has a clear appeal for players who want survival systems and the Dune setting combined with the scale and social structure of a persistent world. Its reported solo option makes the proposition more flexible than the original shared-world pitch, but it does not erase the game’s multiplayer-oriented foundations. The available facts establish its design, platforms and system requirements; they do not establish how well it plays or whether it is worth the asking price for a particular player. That judgment depends on whether its survival-crafting and world structure match what you want.
