Can you play with friends if a server is locked?
A lock does not necessarily mean you have to wait to play together. Funcom says you can start on another Sietch in the same World and visit your friends, or check back later for newly enabled slots. Starting on another Sietch is not the same as moving your character or base to your friends’ location.
See Funcom’s server selection guidance for its current advice. Server locks and availability can change, so use the in-game server browser for the live situation.

What does a private server let you change?
Private servers are rented from third parties, but they are not wholly separate Worlds: Funcom says a private server belongs to a World that includes other private servers. The owner can name the server and set a password. Depending on what the provider implements, the host may also be able to adjust PvP security zones, taxation, and sandstorms—for example, disabling security zones while retaining PvP pockets, turning off taxation, or disabling sandstorms.
Available controls vary by provider, so confirm the settings you need before renting. Funcom names GPORTAL, Nitrado, and xREALM as rental providers. Funcom does not set their prices; contact the provider about payment, setup, and performance. Funcom support says it cannot access private-server data or intervene in lost-item, base, or vehicle cases. Details are in Funcom’s server FAQ.

What are the self-hosting requirements?
Self-hosting means running a Dune: Awakening World on your own computer. Funcom describes the initial version as experimental: “This is an early experimental version.” Its documented setup requirements are:
- Windows Pro with Hyper-V for the initial setup.
- An SSD and 100 GB of storage.
- A machine with sufficient capacity for the number of players you expect. Funcom lists a 40-player concurrent cap for self-hosted Hagga Basin; other capacity depends on hardware.
Direct Linux installation is technically possible, but Funcom does not provide a streamlined, supported installation for it. There is no additional Funcom fee for self-hosting, though your internet provider may charge for connectivity. These are the requirements documented in Funcom’s Self-Hosting: Requirements & FAQ; because the feature is experimental, check that page’s current instructions before setting up or upgrading a machine.

Can you move a character to a private server?
According to the 1.5.03.0 update summary, characters can move in these directions:
- Official to private or self-hosted: allowed, but the character cannot return to an official server.
- Private to another private server or self-hosted: allowed, but the character cannot return to a private server.
- Self-hosted to another self-hosted server: allowed.
Back up bases and vehicles before transferring. For official-to-private or official-to-self-hosted moves, treat the decision as permanent unless current in-game guidance explicitly says the rules have changed.
Are there current server population rankings?
The available official guidance does not provide a current population count or ranking for official servers. Population and slot availability can change, so check the in-game browser rather than relying on an undated “best server” list. The 40-player figure cited for self-hosted Hagga Basin is a concurrent-player cap, not a population statistic for official servers.
