What is the 2024–2025 Monster Manual?
This is the revised fifth-edition D&D creature reference. Wizards labels the product the 2024 Monster Manual; its general release was February 18, 2025. That distinction matters when searching or shopping: “2024” is the product’s marketed name, while 2025 is the year it became broadly available. The official English-language hardcover is SKU D37110000, ISBN 978-0-7869-6954-8. Wizards’ product page identifies the book and its release information.

The hardcover is a reference for Dungeon Masters building encounters and running creatures. It does not provide a standalone campaign or adventure. Wizards describes the Dungeon Master’s Guide as an ideal companion, but the Monster Manual is the creature book rather than an add-on requirement. D&D Beyond’s overview explains how the updated entries are intended to work with the revised rules.
What’s new compared with the 2014 Monster Manual?
The update combines new creatures with revised returning entries, refreshed presentation, and organizational changes. The published counts differ by source and wording, so they should not be treated as interchangeable:

Wizards and D&D Beyond do not explain how “brand-new monsters” and “new stat blocks” map to one another. The figures are best read as separate claims, not summed or reconciled. D&D Beyond also says returning 2014 stat blocks were revised for fun and usability. Wizards says all creature stat blocks were redesigned and rebalanced; that is the publisher’s description, not an independent assessment of how the changes play at every table.
Stat blocks and organization
The book changes how creature statistics are presented and organized, alongside updating the creatures themselves. Wizards describes the stat blocks as redesigned and rebalanced for ease of use, and says the book is organized intuitively. Those are design goals from the publisher, rather than findings from comparative usability testing.

New and revised creatures
There are both new entries and changes to familiar creatures. The exact totals depend on the source’s category: Wizards advertises over 75 brand-new monsters, while D&D Beyond lists 87 new stat blocks. In addition to these additions, returning 2014 entries have revised statistics.
Can you use it with older D&D adventures?
Yes. D&D Beyond says the 2025 book replaces the 2014 Monster Manual stat blocks when using the updated book. The adventure itself remains an older product; the change is which creature statistics you consult during play.

Some references will not line up one-to-one. D&D Beyond identifies 59 2014 stat blocks with name changes or challenge-rating-appropriate replacements. If an older adventure names a creature that does not appear under the same name, use Appendix B: Stat Block Conversions to find the relevant updated entry. Wizards lists February 18, 2025 as the general release date and February 4, 2025 as North American local-game-store early access. A separate Wizards event article gave later regional dates for its play-series event: March 21, 2025 for Australia and New Zealand, and April 25, 2025 for the rest of Southeast Asia. These are event-specific dates and should not be mistaken for a universal retail release schedule. The event announcement also describes the 50th Anniversary Play Series and its four-hour, 4th-level adventure, Hold Back the Dead.
