This is an organizing effort in progress—not a completed election or contract for these groups.
Which Wizards of the Coast teams are organizing?
The announced effort covers two groups: the Dungeons & Dragons team, including D&D Beyond workers, and Studio X, which includes the tabletop Magic: The Gathering and Duel Masters teams. The workers are organizing with CWA as part of UWOTC-CWA. The announcement concerns workers in these specified groups, not every person who works on or plays those games.
MTG Arena workers are a separate unit within the same broader union organization. Their earlier organizing effort produced an election result in June 2026, according to UWOTC-CWA. That result does not establish the status of the newly announced D&D and Studio X units.
What is the unionization process’ status?
The teams told Wizards of the Coast leadership that they intend to unionize and asked the company to voluntarily recognize their union by October 13, 2026. CWA says the workers also filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for an election, intended to ensure a timely certification process. The recognition request and election petition are steps in the process; neither means these groups have already won an election or secured a contract.

The union announcement says, “Once recognized, we will begin our bargaining and share additional details with you all as they develop.” As of October 7, 2026, the recognition deadline had not passed, and the outcome of the request, the petition’s progress, any election result, and bargaining or contract status had not been established in the cited reports. CWA’s October 6 release and ICv2’s coverage report the announcement and deadline.
What concerns and goals have workers named?
The workers’ stated aims include compensation that reflects their work, clearer career progression, job security, accessible healthcare, sustainable workloads, and protections for remote and hybrid work. They have also raised concerns about layoffs, forced relocation, equitable pay, advancement, mandatory AI use, parental support, and ownership of work created outside the office. These are the workers’ stated concerns and bargaining goals, not findings about every employee’s individual circumstances.

CWA quotes Eric Levine, a UWOTC-CWA member and Magic Rules Manager, saying: “Those incredible people deserve fair compensation, remote protections, clear career progression, and more.” CWA also identifies Joey Haeck as a UWOTC-CWA member and senior game designer on Dungeons & Dragons; his statement includes the phrase “because scared workers are neither happy nor productive.”

CWA reported in its October 6, 2026 release that more than 4,000 workers across the gaming industry had organized through its Campaign to Organize Digital Employees (CODE-CWA). It also said nearly 600 members across the United States and Canada belonged to United Videogame Workers-CWA Local 9433. Those figures describe wider organizing efforts, not the size of the D&D or Studio X groups, and are CWA’s figures rather than independently audited totals. The release is available at CWA.

For comparison, MTG Arena workers announced an organizing effort in April and reported that their union was elected in June 2026. UWOTC-CWA’s announcements document that earlier timeline. The Arena unit’s election is distinct from the still-pending process for the D&D and Studio X workers.
