Ravenloft: The Horrors Within is a Dungeons & Dragons horror sourcebook, not a standalone adventure. It brings together Domains of Dread, Darklords, horror-themed character options and tools for building campaigns; the companion physical Ravenloft: The Horrors Within Tarokka Deck is a 54-card aid for readings, adventure planning and improvisation. Both products were listed for release on June 16, 2026.

What Ravenloft: The Horrors Within adds to D&D

Wizards of the Coast describes Ravenloft: The Horrors Within as a horror expansion. It is designed to help a Dungeon Master create and run horror campaigns, rather than provide one complete, ready-to-play adventure. Its setting material centers on Domains of Dread and their Darklords, alongside advice for shaping horror experiences and tools for player characters and encounters. D&D Beyond’s source page presents the book as a “complete book of nightmares,” while the Wizards Play Network listing describes it as a horror expansion.

The publisher’s product page lists 16 Domains of Dread and 17 Darklords, plus seven subclasses, four species, four backgrounds, two Origin feats and nine Dark Gifts. Those are contents stated in the official listing, not a measure of how much play material the book provides. Product pages describe monster and map totals differently across formats, so they should not be combined into a single count.

The practical distinction is that the book supplies the broader campaign framework and character options; the deck is a focused physical tool for generating prompts and shaping play.

How the Tarokka Deck works

Ravenloft: The Horrors Within Tarokka Deck is a physical, fully illustrated 54-card deck. The marketplace listing says it includes instructions for Tarokka readings, adventure planning and incorporating cards into a game; purchase also includes access to a digital deck. The D&D Beyond Marketplace product listing describes those uses.

For readings and improvisation

A DM can use a reading to establish prompts or introduce uncertainty, then interpret the result in the context of the party and campaign. The cards are an aid, not a requirement for running the sourcebook or a Ravenloft game.

Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft
  • Travel (perhaps even by choice) to Ravenloft's expanded Domains of Dread—each domain with its own unique flavor of horror, thrilling story hooks, and grisly cast of characters
  • Craft your own D&D horror settings, add tension with optional rules, and get advice for running a game that's ghastly in all the right ways
  • Create characters with lineages tied to vampires, undead, and hags, horror-themed subclasses, the Investigator background, and "Dark Gifts" that may be a double-edged sword
  • Unleash nightmarish monsters from an expanded bestiary, and browse a collection of mysterious trinkets
  • Explore Ravenloft in the included Dungeons & Dragons adventure—play as a stand-alone adventure or drop it into your current game for a bit of sinister fun

For creating a Domain of Dread

D&D Beyond says the book includes guidance for creating a domain with the Tarokka deck, including random generation of Domains of Dread. This makes the deck useful when a DM wants an unpredictable starting point for a new horror setting, while the book provides the surrounding setting and campaign guidance. The marketplace also says the cards can influence a party’s fate in any D&D adventure, so their intended use is not confined to a Ravenloft campaign.

The screen and Map Pack are additional table aids rather than substitutes for either item.
