A console that merely powers on has not passed those checks.
Before you arrange to see it
Ask the seller for a clear photo of the model label and rear connections. “Fat” and “slim” are informal descriptions, not exact model identifiers. Use the SCPH number to find the matching Sony PS2 manual; the index includes families such as SCPH-30000, 39000, 50000, 70000, 77000, 79000, and 90000. Check the manual and accessory compatibility for the exact console rather than assuming every item marked “PS2” fits every revision or region.
Ask what is included and whether each item is working, compatible, untested, or missing. For example, Sony’s SCPH-90002/90003 manual lists a DUALSHOCK 2 controller, AV cable, and AC power cord among that model’s package contents; that does not mean every listing includes them. Request an uninterrupted video showing startup, a game loading, and basic play. Also ask what return period or remedy the seller offers if an advertised function fails. Sony notes that third-party used PlayStation products may not be covered by warranty, and there is no universal return term established for private or marketplace sales.
What to test during the demonstration
Inspect the console before connecting it. Check the case, vents, connectors, model label, and serial number for visible damage, heavy debris, signs of overheating, or removed labels. Sony recommends checking condition and serial numbers when buying used PlayStation products.

- Start with the complete video chain. Use the cable and display you expect to use, then confirm a stable picture and sound. Write down the chain: console output → cable → converter, if needed → TV input. HDMI does not accept an analog console cable directly; check a converter’s supported signal formats, audio handling, and power requirements before buying one.
- Load and play a known-working game. Insert a clean disc and wait for it to load beyond the opening screen. Play long enough to check controls, picture, and sound. If a disc fails, Sony’s guidance is to check its type, condition, and region; consult the console manual and game information for compatibility rather than assuming every PS2 title works on every regional console.
- Check the disc mechanism. Open and close the tray or lid normally; never force it. If practical, test more than one disc format you intend to use. One successful disc demonstrates only that particular test, not that every disc will work or that the mechanism will remain reliable.
- Test the controller and ports you need. Try the directional pad, sticks, face and shoulder buttons, Start, and Select. Test both controller ports if you need local multiplayer. Not every game uses every control, so focus on inputs relevant to your intended use.
- Test saving if a memory card is included. Use the game to create a save, return to a menu or game state, and reload it. Sony specifies an 8 MB PS2 memory card for saving and loading PS2-format software and distinguishes it from an original PlayStation-format card. If the card is not recognized or the save fails, check insertion and compatibility; a power-on test does not establish that saving works.
- Let it run and listen. Keep the console on beyond the title screen. Note unusual noise, smell, image dropouts, resets, or overheating warnings. Sony’s manual cautions against blocked vents and explains that overheating can interrupt proper operation.
If the seller cannot demonstrate a function, treat it as untested rather than working. A brief test can reveal obvious problems, but it cannot establish long-term reliability.
Make sure the console fits your games and TV
Check the game and console region, especially if either is being bought across regions. Sony’s operating guidance says disc playback can depend on region code and broadcast standard. The exact model manual and the game’s compatibility information are the right references; a broad “PS2-compatible” claim is not enough to settle every combination.

Inspect the television’s actual inputs before buying a cable or converter. Account for every connection and any separate power supply in the video chain. The appropriate setup depends on the console’s output and the TV’s inputs; no particular converter or adapter is established as best for every setup.

There is no universal best PS2 model or established fair price in the available guidance. Compare the actual evidence, included parts, condition, seller terms, and cost of completing your setup rather than choosing by a listing title alone.
