Dustborn is a story-first road-trip adventure with a divided critical reception: reviewers often praise its characters, dialogue, and comic-book-inspired style, while finding its combat less successful. If you want a character-focused narrative game and can tolerate uneven action, it may appeal; if polished, deep combat is your priority, the reviews point elsewhere.
What is Dustborn?
Developed by Red Thread Games and published by Quantic Dream, Dustborn is a single-player, story-driven action-adventure released on August 20, 2024. You play Pax, carrying a package from Pacifica to Nova Scotia across an alternate-history American Republic. The journey combines exploration, missions, dialogue choices, crew relationships, combat, and performances by the group’s touring band. Pax can also use voice-based abilities called Vox or Shouts in conversations and fights. Steam’s game description outlines these systems.
The blend matters when reading the reviews: this is not simply a combat game or a conventional visual novel. Its road-trip story and relationships are central, but it also asks players to engage with action and rhythm-game sections.
What do critics think of Dustborn?
The broad verdict is mixed. On Metacritic’s PC critic page, the displayed Metascore was 68, classified “Mixed or Average,” with 24 displayed critic reviews when checked in 2026. The page’s critic breakdown showed 11 positive (48%), 11 mixed (48%), and 1 negative (4%); the displayed percentages and review counts may change.

Metacritic’s overview page also showed a score of 68, but based on 23 critic reviews across platforms. Its listed platform totals were 24 for PC, 22 for PS5, and 11 for Xbox Series X, so the review-count figures displayed across the pages do not reconcile. Treat the score and count as page-specific snapshots, not as a single stable total for every version.
Positive excerpts on Metacritic’s review pages include coverage from RPGFan, GameSpew, and IGN Spain. The favorable case centers on a memorable cast, conversations, and a found-family road-trip story, supported by an unusual alternate-history setting and distinctive presentation. Less favorable reviews tend to find the action weaker than the narrative; pacing, tonal balance, and the treatment of political themes also divide critics.

What reviewers praise
Characters, dialogue, and relationships
The clearest strength in favorable reviews is the writing around the crew. The journey gives the characters time to interact, and their conversations and relationships are a major part of the experience. Players drawn to ensemble casts and character-led road stories are more likely to connect with this side of Dustborn.
Gamereactor UK’s review excerpt, reproduced on Steam’s page, says: “If you like strong stories and games where your choices matter, Dustborn is for you.” That is a reviewer’s assessment, not a statement from the developer.

Distinctive setting and presentation
The alternate-history trip across the American Republic gives the story a clear identity, while its comic-book-inspired presentation helps it stand out. Critics who responded positively often treated the setting and style as part of the game’s appeal, not just decoration around the character story.
What critics criticize
Combat is the most consistent weakness
Combat is the recurring reservation in the reception. The Guardian’s Malindy Hetfeld described it as easy and monotonous, finding the action less compelling than the dialogue and character writing. That makes Dustborn a harder recommendation for players who want demanding or varied fights; its story is the stronger draw.

Pacing and serious themes divide reviewers
Not every critic found the narrative’s delivery successful. Hetfeld praised the writing while arguing that the handling of serious topics weighs down the experience. Her standfirst for The Guardian’s review, published August 15, 2024, reads: “Dustborn tries to be more than just another narrative travel game, but its half-baked focus on serious topics weighs down great dialogue and beautiful character writing.” Game Rant’s Metacritic excerpt is notably harsher about pacing and systems it considers underdeveloped.
These are critical judgments, not a claim that every player will respond the same way. They do, however, flag a genuine trade-off: a story can have strong character writing and an appealing premise while still feeling uneven in pacing or in how it handles weightier themes.

Is Dustborn worth playing?
Consider Dustborn if you value character-focused storytelling, crew relationships, dialogue choices, and an unusual road-trip setting more than consistently strong action. The band performances and Vox abilities add variety, but they do not erase the criticism of combat.
If combat depth and polish are your main criteria, the critical consensus suggests looking for a different game. If you are comfortable with a mixed reception and uneven action in exchange for a distinctive narrative adventure, the strengths identified by favorable reviewers may be enough to make it worthwhile.
