dxerr9.dll missing or not found errors usually come from an older game or third-party application, not from Windows itself. The safest fix is to identify the program requesting dxerr9.dll and repair that program instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows files, answer these questions:

- Which game or application displays the error?
- Does it happen when launching OMSI, OMSI 2, an older DirectX game, a developer sample, or another utility?
- Did the problem begin after reinstalling, moving the executable, applying a patch, installing a mod, or an antivirus detection?
- Is
dxerr9.dllmissing from the same folder as the program’s executable? - Is the application probably 32-bit? Most older DirectX 9 games are 32-bit even on 64-bit Windows.
- Does the message also mention files such as
d3dx9.dll,d3dx9_*.dll,XINPUT1_3.dll, XAudio, XACT,ode.dll, Visual C++, or .NET?
Do not assume that every file with this name comes from the same publisher. dxerr9.dll is generally an application-private file or a third-party build used by older software. It is not established as a normal Windows component and should not ordinarily be in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Fix 1: Repair the application that requested dxerr9.dll
This is the most likely solution.
Find the program folder
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field to identify the executable.
- Select Open File Location if that button is available.
- Look in the executable’s folder for
dxerr9.dll.
If the DLL is absent, the installation is incomplete, the file was quarantined, or the program is being launched from the wrong directory.

Older applications often expect private DLLs beside their executable. Do not move the executable to another folder or launch an alternate copy from a mod or subfolder unless the application documentation specifically requires it.
Use the application’s repair option
Check the program’s Start menu folder, launcher, or installer for entries named Repair, Verify, Restore, or Scan and repair. Run the repair from an administrator account if Windows requests permission.
For a Steam installation:
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete the scan.
- Start the game from Steam rather than from a copied executable.
Verification should restore files that belong to the official installation. It may also replace modified files, so back up saves, configuration files, and carefully installed mods first.

How to tell whether this worked
The fix worked if the program reaches its main window without the missing-DLL message. If a new message names another file, record that filename rather than copying dxerr9.dll from somewhere else. The application may have several missing dependencies.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove a private DLL even when the rest of the application remains installed.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the application folder or
dxerr9.dll. - Expand a detection to view its path and details.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- The detected file is inside the legitimate application directory.
- The application came from its official installer or a trusted storefront.
- The file was not manually downloaded from a DLL website.
- You have confirmed that the detection belongs to the affected program.
After restoring it, update Windows Security and run a full scan. If the file is removed again, do not keep restoring it blindly. Reinstall the application from its official source and submit the detection to the security vendor for review.

Installing or updating DirectX 12 does not necessarily install every optional side-by-side component required by an older DirectX 9 program.

Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) package is intended for legacy components including optional D3DX, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, XACT, and Managed DirectX files. Download it only from Microsoft’s official DirectX End-User Runtimes page.
Use it as follows:
- Download
directx_Jun2010_redist.exefrom Microsoft. - Create a new empty folder, such as
C:DirectXTemp. - Run the downloaded package.
- When asked where to extract the files, select that folder.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Run
DXSETUP.exe. - Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected application again.
This is appropriate when the error also names d3dx9_*.dll, XINPUT1_3.dll, XAudio, or XACT files. It is not a guaranteed installer for a general-purpose dxerr9.dll. Microsoft documents DXERR9.LIB as an old development-time library, later replaced by DXERR.LIB; that library name should not be confused with an end-user runtime DLL.
Do not install random optional Windows components merely because the application is old. If the program’s documentation specifically requires DirectPlay or another Windows feature, use the next section.
Fix 4: Check Windows Features only when the program requires them
Some older games require a legacy Windows feature, but enabling features at random will not normally recreate an application-private dxerr9.dll.
To inspect optional features:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the list for a feature named in the game’s documentation or error message.
- Select the required feature.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
If you are not sure which feature the program needs, leave the list unchanged and return to application repair. Enabling unrelated legacy components can add complexity without replacing the missing file.
Fix 5: Confirm the application is using the correct architecture
The commonly reported catalog description for one dxerr9.dll variant lists it as 32-bit, with version 0.0.0.0 and a size of approximately 0.6 MB. That is catalog metadata, not a universal identity for every file with this name.
A 32-bit game needs a compatible 32-bit DLL. It can run on 64-bit Windows, but Windows does not convert a 64-bit DLL into a usable 32-bit one.

- Right-click the game’s executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open Details and Compatibility to review available information.
- Check the publisher’s documentation for the application architecture.
- Restore the DLL through the application installer or verified game files.
A message saying the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or that it contains an error often indicates a mismatched or corrupted binary. Do not replace it with a similarly named dxerr9.dll, DXErr9ab.dll, or dxerr.dll.
Fix 6: Review recent driver or Windows changes
A graphics-driver update is not a direct repair for a missing private DLL. However, if the application began failing after a driver change, Windows update, or hardware change, check the driver state separately.
To inspect the display driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the driver date and version.
- Use Update Driver if a trusted update is available, or use Roll Back Driver if the failure began immediately after an update and the option is available.
- Restart Windows.
Do not expect this step to restore dxerr9.dll. If the DLL message remains, return to the parent application’s installer and file verification.
Manually hunting through driver versions can mean comparing many hardware-specific packages and repeating the process after each change. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its full version performs the driver installation, but reinstalling the affected game or application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.
Fix 7: Use SFC and DISM only for wider Windows corruption
Because dxerr9.dll is not established as a Windows-protected system file, SFC and DISM are lower-probability fixes. Use them when Windows itself is malfunctioning or several unrelated system components are failing.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Try the application again.
These commands repair protected Windows components. They will not normally recreate a private DLL installed by a game.

Repeatedly running repair commands without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slower. Do not copy dxerr9.dll into System32
Avoid DLL download sites and search-result mirrors. A downloaded file may contain malware, belong to a different application, use the wrong architecture, or fail because another dependency is missing. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also create DLL search-order conflicts.

- The same trusted application installer.
- Another verified installation of the same application version.
- The application’s own backup.
Do not use regsvr32 for this problem. A normal private runtime DLL is loaded by the application and is not a COM or ActiveX component that needs registration. Running regsvr32 may simply produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found.

Check these items in order:
- Confirm that you are launching the intended executable from the normal shortcut or launcher.
- Check whether antivirus removed the file again.
- Temporarily remove recently installed mods after backing up their files.
- Look for a new missing filename in the next error message.
- Review the application’s log folder.
- Open Event Viewer by searching from Start, then check Windows Logs → Application for an entry at the failure time.
- Confirm that required Visual C++ or .NET runtimes are installed only if the error names them.
- Check whether the application’s installer supports a repair operation.
- Use System Restore only as a last resort after a known system change, when no clean application installer is available.
“The specified module could not be found” can mean a dependency loaded by dxerr9.dll is missing. The named DLL may exist while another required file does not.
FAQ
Is dxerr9.dll a Windows system file?
No reliable Microsoft source establishes a general dxerr9.dll as a Windows component. Treat it as a private file belonging to the program that installed it.
Is dxerr9.dll part of DirectX 9?
It may be used by older DirectX-era software, but do not confuse it with Microsoft’s DXERR9.LIB, a development library. The June 2010 DirectX package can restore related legacy runtime files, but it is not a guaranteed source for an application-specific dxerr9.dll.
Is OMSI or OMSI 2 the only program that uses it?
No. OMSI installations provide a real-world example of an application directory containing dxerr9.dll alongside other legacy dependencies, but another game, utility, sample, or bundled application may be responsible for the error.

No. Restore it through the affected program’s repair feature, verified game files, or official installer. A random replacement may be malicious, incompatible, or unrelated to the application.
Do I need the 64-bit version because I use 64-bit Windows?
Not necessarily. Older games are often 32-bit and need a compatible 32-bit dependency. The application’s installer determines which file belongs there.
Can SFC fix this error?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while dxerr9.dll is generally application-specific. Use SFC and DISM for broader Windows corruption, not as the first response to this filename.
Why does regsvr32 dxerr9.dll fail?
Because a normal private runtime DLL does not usually export the registration function that regsvr32 expects. Registration is not the normal repair method for this file.
