Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →You may see “The program can’t start because dxerr9ab.dll is missing from your computer,” “The code execution cannot proceed because dxerr9ab.dll was not found,” or “Error loading dxerr9ab.dll.”
dxerr9ab.dll is a legacy application DLL, so the safest repair is usually to restore the program that installed it rather than copy a replacement into Windows.
The 60-second answer
- Note the name and location of the executable shown in the error.
- Use the program’s launcher to verify or repair its files.
- If no repair option exists, reinstall the affected program from its original installer or official store library.
- Check Windows Security Protection History in case the DLL was quarantined.
- If the application also reports missing
d3dx9_*.dll,xinput1_3.dll, or similar files, install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes June 2010. - Do not download
dxerr9ab.dllfrom a random DLL website or copy it blindly intoSystem32.
dxerr9ab.dll is associated with the legacy DirectX 9 DXErr helper adapted for JEDI, Delphi, and C++Builder applications. Clootie’s Delphi DirectX archive identifies DXErr9ab.DLL as a helper library needed by projects using DXErr, not as a normal Windows component. The archive also lists historical SDK-era packages, so the correct build can depend on the application.

What dxerr9ab.dll is and is not
The file is commonly associated with older games, simulators, visual tools, and Delphi or Free Pascal applications. Public examples include Act of War, vvvv, Safety Driving Simulator, and myHouse, but the filename alone cannot identify which program is affected on your computer.

Microsoft’s legacy DirectX package installs older components such as D3DX, XInput, XAudio, XACT, and Managed DirectX side by side. It does not specifically verify that it supplies the JEDI-specific dxerr9ab.dll. Microsoft describes the old DirectX SDK as end-of-life and primarily relevant to maintaining older software. Causes, ranked by likelihood
| Cause | Correct response |
|---|---|
| The application installation is incomplete or corrupted | Verify, repair, re-extract, or reinstall the application |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | Review Protection History and restore only a trusted file |
| The wrong DLL build or architecture is present | Restore the copy shipped with the application |
| Other legacy DirectX files are missing | Install Microsoft’s official June 2010 runtime |
| A launcher, patcher, or updater has its own damaged folder | Repair that executable’s installation separately |
| Windows has broader component corruption | Run DISM and SFC as secondary checks |
Fix 1: Verify or reinstall the affected application
This is the most likely solution because dxerr9ab.dll normally belongs beside the application that uses it.
Find the affected program
- Read the full error carefully.
- Note the executable name if Windows displays it.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, check Target.
- Select Open File Location if available.
- Look in that folder for the application executable and its
dxerr9ab.dlldependency.
The failing executable may be a game, launcher, updater, patcher, or helper tool. If only a patcher fails, reinstalling the main program may not repair the patcher’s separate directory.
Verify files through a launcher
For a game or application managed by a launcher:
- Open the launcher.
- Open its library or installed-program list.
- Select the affected program.
- Open Manage, Properties, or Settings.
- Choose Verify files, Verify integrity, Repair, or the equivalent option.
- Wait for the scan and replacement process to finish.
- Restart the launcher and test the program.
If verification reports missing files, allow it to restore them. This is safer than selecting a DLL from an unrelated download page because the launcher can restore the build intended for that application.
Reinstall from the original source
If verification is unavailable:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it.
- Reinstall using the original vendor installer or the store library that supplied the application.
- Launch the program once before adding unofficial patches or modifications.
For a portable application, download or recover the complete original archive and extract it again. Do not extract only a single DLL. Some applications keep the helper in a bin folder or another private directory beside the executable.
A successful repair means the original program starts without the dxerr9ab.dll message. If a different DLL is then reported as missing, continue with the next section rather than downloading several unrelated files.
Fix 2: Install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX components when needed
Install the Microsoft runtime only when the application also needs Microsoft legacy DirectX components. Typical messages mention files such as d3dx9_*.dll, xinput1_3.dll, or related XAudio and XACT components.
- Download Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes June 2010.
- Save
directx_Jun2010_redist.exeto a temporary folder. - Run the file as administrator.
- Choose a temporary extraction folder when prompted.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Run
DXSETUP.exe. - Accept the license terms and complete setup.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application again.
This package does not replace the DirectX version built into Windows. It adds older side-by-side libraries used by older applications. It may fix related DirectX errors, but it may not restore the JEDI-specific dxerr9ab.dll. If the file itself remains missing, return to application verification or reinstall the application.
The Microsoft web installer is also available through the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, but the offline package is generally more practical for older software that must be repaired repeatedly.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an application DLL after an update or scan.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry that names
dxerr9ab.dllor the affected application. - Confirm that the detected path belongs to the trusted application directory.
- Restore or allow the file only if the application came from a trusted original source and you can validate the installer.
Microsoft warns that allowing a detected file can expose the device if the file is genuinely malicious. Protection History guidance explains how to review detections.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
After restoring a quarantined file, run the application again. If Windows Security immediately removes it again, do not keep forcing the restore. Reinstall the application from its official source and contact the application vendor if the detection continues.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
The commonly identified dxerr9ab.dll is an x86, or 32-bit, helper. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run 32-bit applications, but those applications still need their matching 32-bit dependencies.
Check the application architecture as follows:
- Open Settings.
- Select System and then About.
- Note System type to see whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
- Check the application’s documentation or installer for its architecture.
- Restore the DLL from that application’s own package.
Do not substitute a similarly named dxerr9.dll, a file from another DirectX release, or a copy taken from another application. Historical JEDI-compatible packages contain different builds, and an application may require the exact version distributed with it.

If the message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or contains an error, suspect a corrupt, truncated, wrong-architecture, or quarantined DLL. Reinstall the application instead of forcing the file to load.

Fix 5: Update Windows and repair related drivers
A recent Windows update, failed installation, or driver change can expose problems in an old application. Updating Windows is reasonable, although it does not normally recreate an application-local JEDI DLL.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
If the application reports a graphics or DirectX initialization error as well as the missing DLL:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also choose Uninstall device only when you have a reliable driver source and understand the recovery steps. Do not remove a working graphics driver merely because dxerr9ab.dll is missing.
If manually checking every hardware vendor’s driver version is slowing down the repair, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. For this file, reinstalling the owning application remains the definitive fix.

These commands repair protected Windows components. They generally do not recreate an application-local dxerr9ab.dll, so use them when Windows has broader symptoms, not as the first response to this file.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Microsoft’s system-file instructions describe the repair process.
If Windows repair repeatedly reports corruption, or you need help tracking which component changed during repeated scans, Outbyte PC Repair can show a scan of detected problems; repair actions are handled by the full version. It is not required for this DLL, and reinstalling the application remains the correct fix when the missing file belongs to that program.
Fix 7: Use System Restore only as a last resort
Use System Restore only if the application worked previously and you have a restore point from before the failure.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Open Control Panel.
- Select Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Continue only if the restore point is appropriate.
- Restart and test the application.
You can also press Win+R, enter rstrui.exe, and press Enter. Microsoft documents the process in its System Restore guidance.
What not to do
- Do not download a random copy from a DLL download website. The file may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, be the wrong historical build, or leave the actual broken installation untouched.
- Do not copy it automatically into
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not copy a DLL from another computer or unrelated game.
- Do not use registry cleaners to solve this error.
- Do not run
regsvr32as a general DLL repair command. Microsoft documents regsvr32 for DLLs that expose registration routines such asDllRegisterServer;dxerr9ab.dllis normally a runtime helper, not a COM server. - Do not replace an existing application copy with a similarly named file from another release.
FAQ
Is dxerr9ab.dll a genuine file?
Yes. It is a real legacy JEDI adaptation of the DirectX 9 DXErr helper used by some older Delphi, C++Builder, simulator, visualization, and game applications.
Is dxerr9ab.dll part of Windows?
There is no reliable evidence that it ships with Windows. Treat it as an application-local dependency.
Will installing DirectX 9 fix it?
It can fix other legacy DirectX files, but Microsoft’s runtime is not verified as the source of the JEDI-specific dxerr9ab.dll. Repair the owning application first.
Should I register the file?
Normally no. regsvr32 is not a general-purpose solution for a missing runtime helper.
Where should the file go?
Usually in the application’s own directory, sometimes in a subfolder such as bin, exactly as supplied by the application’s installer or complete archive.
What information should I collect if the error remains?
Record the full error text, executable path, application version, Windows architecture, whether the application is 32-bit, and whether Windows Security quarantined the file. Give those details to the application vendor through its official support channel.
