dxpps.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component. Its reported description is Device Experience Platform ProxyStub DLL, and public file metadata associates it with Microsoft Windows Operating System and Microsoft Corporation. It is not a separately downloadable DirectX, Visual C++, or .NET redistributable.
Which fix applies to you
Use this order:
- The error appeared after Windows Update, cleanup, or a system change: install pending updates, then run DISM and SFC.
- Microsoft Defender quarantined the file: check Protection history and verify the file before restoring it.
- Only one game or application fails: repair or reinstall that application after repairing Windows.
- The error started after a driver or device change: update or roll back the affected driver.
- Windows cannot repair the file: use System Restore or Windows 11’s repair reinstall.
- The file exists but Windows says “specified module could not be found”: investigate dependencies rather than copying another DLL.
- The file is outside the Windows directory: treat it as suspicious until its signature and owner are verified.
Do not begin by downloading dxpps.dll from a DLL library site.
What dxpps.dll is and where it belongs
dxpps.dll is a Windows DLL associated with the Device Experience Platform. The ProxyStub designation indicates a COM-related Windows component rather than a normal application runtime library.

On a typical Windows installation:
- Native 64-bit system DLLs are stored in
%windir%System32. - 32-bit system DLLs on 64-bit Windows are normally stored in
%windir%SysWOW64. - A 32-bit program may be redirected automatically when it requests a file through a System32 path.
Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32, or a 64-bit file into SysWOW64. A wrong architecture can produce errors such as “not designed to run on Windows” or another loader failure.
To check the expected locations:
- Press
Win+E. - Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Search for
dxpps.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also check
%windir%SysWOW64. - Right-click any copy, choose Properties, and inspect Digital Signatures.
A public metadata example reports version 10.0.19041.1 and a 64-bit System32 copy, but that is not the universal version for every Windows build. The file supplied by your installed Windows version is the one that matters.
Fix 1: install Windows updates, then repair system files
This is the safest first repair for a missing or corrupted Windows component.
Install pending updates
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the affected application again.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run Windows Update again and test the affected program.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies from trusted Windows sources.
A successful result usually says that SFC found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If the application starts afterward, the repair worked.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when you are repeatedly hunting through Windows repairs and cannot tell what changed. Its free scan shows what it finds, while repair actions require the full version; it is optional, and it is not a substitute for repairing or reinstalling an affected application.
If SFC cannot repair everything
Run the more complete sequence:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Restart and run SFC again if necessary.
If DISM reports that repair files cannot be found, use a matching Windows installation source rather than an arbitrary ISO:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:\serverc$windows /LimitAccess
The source must match the installed Windows version. If repair still fails, review:

Do not manually replace dxpps.dll with a file from another Windows build.
Fix 2: check Microsoft Defender quarantine
A legitimate Windows file can be quarantined after a false detection, but restoring it blindly is unsafe.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Choose Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open the detection associated with the missing file.
- Check the reported path and details.
Only consider Restore if the file was located in the Windows directory, its digital signature identifies Microsoft, and the detection appears to be a false positive. Afterward:
- Return to Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Run a Full scan.
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM and SFC again.
Do not disable antivirus merely to force a DLL into place. If Defender repeatedly quarantines the file, stop restoring it and investigate the detection.

Fix 3: repair or reinstall the affected application
If Windows Update, DISM, and SFC complete successfully but only one application reports the error, the application may be damaged. That does not prove it owns dxpps.dll; it may simply be the first program to expose a Windows problem.
Try the application’s repair option:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart and test the application.
For a game or launcher, use its built-in Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity function. The exact wording depends on the publisher.
If repair does not help:
- Back up the application’s settings and saved data if needed.
- Uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application publisher’s official source.
- Install it again.
- Test before adding modifications, unofficial patches, or copied DLLs.
Reinstalling the application is the definitive fix when its own installation is damaged. It is not a reason to download dxpps.dll separately.
Fix 4: investigate a driver or device change
dxpps.dll is not identified as a driver file, but a failed device installation, rollback, or update can expose Windows component problems.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories with warning icons.
- Right-click the recently changed device.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver or Roll Back Driver when available.
- Restart Windows.
Download drivers only from Windows Update, the computer manufacturer, or the device manufacturer.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are stale when you are sorting through many device entries and uncertain versions. Its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation requires the full version; use it as an optional aid, not as a replacement for Windows repair or the official driver source.
After the restart, run DISM and SFC if the DLL error remains.

Fix 6: repair Windows when normal servicing fails
On Windows 11, some systems offer a repair reinstall:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available. Availability depends on the Windows version and configuration.
If Windows will not boot, enter the Windows Recovery Environment and try System Restore or the available repair options. Back up important files before using a major recovery operation.

Should you run regsvr32 dxpps.dll?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It applies only to DLLs designed for registration and requires the appropriate DllRegisterServer entry point. Public inspection reports that some dxpps.dll builds export registration functions, but Microsoft does not publish a dxpps.dll-specific instruction telling ordinary users to register it.
Registration will not:
- restore a missing file;
- repair a damaged Windows component store;
- replace a wrong-architecture DLL;
- repair a missing dependency.
Use regsvr32 only when a documented COM-registration problem specifically identifies this component and the file has already been restored from a trusted, matching Windows source. The 32-bit and 64-bit versions of regsvr32.exe must also match the DLL and the calling process.
Why downloading dxpps.dll is a bad repair
Do not download this file from random DLL websites or copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory.
A downloaded DLL may contain malware, belong to a different Windows build, use the wrong architecture, have incompatible dependencies, or lack a valid Microsoft signature. Even a genuine file may not fix the underlying component-store corruption.
Use these official repair sources instead:
- Windows Update.
- DISM and the Windows component store.
- Matching Windows installation media.
- System Restore.
- Windows repair or reinstall options.
- The affected application’s official installer.
If “module not found” appears even though the file exists
“Error loading dxpps.dll. The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency of dxpps.dll is missing, not necessarily that the named file itself is absent.
Do not copy additional DLLs at random. Record:
- The full error text.
- The executable that displays it.
- The path of
dxpps.dll. - Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Your Windows edition and build.
- Whether the file exists in System32 or SysWOW64.
- Recent updates, driver changes, cleanup tools, or antivirus detections.
- Relevant entries from Event Viewer.
If only one application fails, repair that application. If several programs fail, prioritize Windows repair and malware checks.
FAQ
Is dxpps.dll part of DirectX?
No verified evidence ties it to the DirectX redistributable. The name begins with dx, but the reported identity is a Windows Device Experience Platform proxy/stub component.
Is dxpps.dll a Visual C++ or .NET file?
No. It is not identified as a Visual C++, .NET, or separately downloadable runtime component.
Is the file safe?
An authentic Microsoft-signed copy in the expected Windows directory is expected to be legitimate. A copy found in a download folder, temporary directory, or unrelated application folder requires verification.
Should I install a driver to fix it?
Not as a routine fix. Update or roll back a driver only when the problem began after a device or driver change. Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC first.
What if SFC reports no problems?
The issue may involve an application-local copy, a dependency, COM registration, or a damaged application. Check the file path and repair the affected program.
What information should I provide for further help?
Provide the complete error message, affected executable, Windows version and build, file locations found, recent system changes, antivirus history, and the final DISM and SFC results. Do not upload or share personal files from the Windows directory.
