Dying Light 2: Stay Human is the clear choice if you want a substantial, playable open-world zombie game. It has a full campaign, side content, first-person parkour, creative melee combat, a day-and-night danger cycle, consequential choices, four-player online co-op and continuing support.
The San Francisco title people are referring to is Tenderloin Night Shift, a short-lived web shooter made by NanoCorp founder Pierre-Louis Biojout. It was set in the real Tenderloin district, was removed from NanoCorp’s website after criticism and is not documented as a full, supported open-world campaign. The two projects therefore are not equivalent commercial alternatives: one is a released game designed for long-term play, while the other became news because of its premise and ethical controversy.

What is the San Francisco zombie shooter?
Tenderloin Night Shift was a weekend web project
Tenderloin Night Shift was published by Pierre-Louis Biojout, founder of NanoCorp, as a browser-based shooter set on recognizable streets in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district. PC Gamer reported on October 16, 2026, that the project had been removed from NanoCorp’s website following criticism. Biojout said it had generated $300 in in-game advertising revenue.

So I monetized it [as a] Call of Duty style zombie shooter on the real SF streets.” The reporting describes targets including a “folded” fentanyl user and a Black security guard. Those details are central to why the project attracted attention; they are not evidence that it offers the systems, content or support expected from a conventional retail game.

Why the scope matters
The available reporting identifies a short-lived web experiment, not a released, content-supported open-world campaign. It does not establish a complete story, a progression system, a substantial map, a replay loop, supported multiplayer or a continuing update plan. Because the project was taken down, current access is also not established. Calling it a direct competitor to Dying Light 2 would imply features that have not been documented.

What you actually get in Dying Light 2
A complete campaign in Villedor
Techland’s official description puts you in the role of Aiden Caldwell, a wandering Pilgrim looking for his sister Mia. The setting is Villedor, a fictional city rebuilt around life after a zombie catastrophe. The campaign is surrounded by side activities and exploration rather than being a short standalone shooting scenario.
The fictional setting also gives the game room to stage faction conflicts, survival decisions and infected encounters without turning real residents or real poverty into targets. Choices are part of the play structure: decisions affect conflicts and the direction of the city, so the story is not simply a sequence of identical missions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesParkour is the main reason to choose it
Dying Light 2’s signature feature is first-person parkour across a vertical urban environment. You climb, leap, vault and route yourself through streets and rooftops instead of treating the map as a flat series of shooting lanes. That movement system affects both ordinary travel and combat preparation: height, escape routes and nearby surfaces matter when a chase begins.

- Easy to use
- Good product for use
- Good performance
- Good quality
No reliable account of Tenderloin Night Shift establishes a comparable traversal model. It is therefore accurate to say that Dying Light 2 wins decisively for parkour, not to speculate about a web project’s movement mechanics.
Melee-first combat with tools and limited firearms
Techland presents melee combat as a creative system. You scavenge equipment, improvise with weapons and tools, and use the environment while deciding when to engage or flee. Firearms exist as a last resort rather than defining every encounter. That combination makes positioning and movement part of the fight, especially when infected become more dangerous after dark.
The San Francisco project was described as a Call of Duty-style web shooter, but the available account does not detail weapon variety, enemy behavior, upgrades, balance, missions or progression. It would be misleading to score its gunplay against Dying Light 2 as if both had been documented to the same depth.
The day/night cycle changes your risk calculation
Dying Light 2 has a dynamic day/night system. Daylight and darkness are not cosmetic switches: they change the danger level and how you plan movement through Villedor. A route that is manageable during the day can become a high-risk run after dark, encouraging preparation, alternate paths and decisions about whether a reward is worth the exposure.

- WELCOME IN THE WORLD OF DYING LIGHT 2! Over twenty years ago in Harran, we fought the virus—and lost. Now, we’re losing again. The City, one of the last large human settlements, is torn by conflict. Civilization has fallen back into the Dark Ages. And yet, we still have hope.
No day/night mechanics are established for Tenderloin Night Shift. If your interest in zombie games is built around escalating nighttime tension, only Dying Light 2 has a documented system to evaluate.
Co-op for up to four players
The official PlayStation listing supports up to four online players. In practical terms, that is the host and up to three friends exploring and fighting together. Co-op gives the parkour routes, scavenging and combat more flexibility: one player can draw attention while another searches, and a group can approach encounters from several elevations.
There is no established supported multiplayer mode for Tenderloin Night Shift. Its browser format and short lifespan should not be treated as proof of co-op, matchmaking or a repeatable group activity.

Techland describes five years of post-launch content for Dying Light 2, including updates and community-created content. Its 2026 franchise information says the game remains within that five-year support plan, with seasonal events, hotfixes and larger feature updates. That does not guarantee a particular future feature or event, but it does distinguish the game from a one-weekend project that was removed from its host site.

How the two projects compare on the questions players actually ask
Which has the larger and longer-lasting game world?
Dying Light 2 is the only one of the two with a documented full campaign, side content, co-op and a continuing support plan. Its open-world design is built for repeated movement through Villedor, scavenging and revisiting activities. Tenderloin Night Shift is documented as a weekend web project and was taken down. Its total map size, mission count and replay value are not established.
Which has better parkour?
Dying Light 2 wins by evidence, not by guesswork. First-person parkour is one of its defining systems, and the city is designed around vertical traversal. No comparable system has been reported for the San Francisco shooter, so there is no sound basis for calling the two a close contest.
Which has deeper combat?
Dying Light 2 has documented melee, tools and limited firearms integrated with movement, scavenging and the day/night cycle. Tenderloin Night Shift has only been characterized at a high level as a Call of Duty-style web shooter. Without reliable information about its weapons, enemies, upgrades or encounter design, a detailed quality ranking would be invented rather than demonstrated.
Which offers more replayability?
The released game has several documented replay drivers: an explorable city, side content, choices, co-op and post-launch events and updates. The browser project has no established progression or replay loop, and its removal limits even basic access. For a player deciding what to install or buy for ongoing play, Dying Light 2 is the only defensible option.

Which handles its setting more responsibly?
Dying Light 2 uses a fictional post-apocalyptic setting. Tenderloin Night Shift used recognizable real-world people and conditions as zombie targets, which prompted condemnation from San Francisco advocates. Jennifer Friedenbach, executive director of the San Francisco Coalition on Homelessness, described it as “monetizing the dehumanization and pretend killing for fun of mostly Black and Brown residents of the poorest neighborhood in San Francisco.”
That criticism is part of the project’s documented public reception. It is separate from judging whether a game’s shooting mechanics are enjoyable, and it is a significant reason the San Francisco title should be understood as an ethical and news story rather than a normal shopping alternative.

A practical decision guide
Choose Dying Light 2 if you want a game to keep playing
- You want a substantial open-world campaign rather than a brief web experiment.
- First-person parkour and vertical exploration are priorities.
- You prefer melee combat supported by tools, scavenging and occasional firearms.
- You want danger to change between day and night.
- You want choices that shape conflicts and the city.
- You need online co-op for up to four players.
- You value a game that remains supported with events, hotfixes and larger updates.
Approach Tenderloin Night Shift as a media and ethics story
The San Francisco project may be relevant if you are examining how games portray homelessness, race, public space and monetization. It is not a sensible recommendation for someone asking which open-world zombie game to buy or play. The documented facts do not establish the content required for a conventional review, and its removal means availability is uncertain.
Does the “50+ million players” figure change the comparison?
Techland’s 2026 franchise page states that the Dying Light series has reached more than 50 million players worldwide. That is a franchise-wide figure, not a claim that Dying Light 2 alone has sold or been played by 50 million people. It provides context for the series’ reach, but it should not be used as a substitute for game-specific sales data or as proof that every player will prefer the game.
Verdict
If the question is “Is Dying Light 2 better than the San Francisco zombie game?”, the answer is yes for anyone seeking an open-world zombie game. Dying Light 2: Stay Human is a released and supported title with documented parkour, melee combat, day/night tension, branching choices and four-player co-op. Tenderloin Night Shift was a removed weekend web shooter whose defining significance lies in its real-world setting, monetization and the condemnation that followed. It is not a like-for-like competitor and should not be presented as one.
