Spoilers for Dying Light: The Following and Dying Light: The Beast. Kyle Crane does not simply die or escape at the end of The Following. Techland’s franchise director says Crane is already becoming “half-survivor, half-monster”; The Beast continues that story with his capture by the Baron and 13 years of experiments. The ending is bleak because it marks the start of Crane’s ordeal, not its resolution.
Which ending of The Following is canon?
The Beast treats Crane’s transformation at the end of The Following as the bridge into his next chapter. Techland franchise director Tymon Smektała said the new game would answer the recurring question of which The Following ending is canonical. In his explanation, Crane is already changing at the end of the earlier game—not simply vanishing from the story.
Smektała described what happens to Crane as him “already kind of turning into this kind of half-survivor, half-monster.” That is Techland’s own framing of the ending, rather than just an interpretation inferred from the later game. Read the interview with Smektała.
Why is The Following’s ending so depressing?
Because the transformation is not a clean death, a cure, or a straightforward escape. The Beast establishes that Crane survives, is captured by the Baron, and is subjected to years of experiments. Techland’s overview says viral strains were spliced into Crane’s DNA; its current game FAQ describes his condition as involving both human and zombie DNA. The human-versus-viral conflict is therefore not an aftermath Crane leaves behind—it becomes central to what happens to him next. Xbox Wire’s Techland-authored overview and Techland’s FAQ explain the premise.

What the game establishes—and what it does not
The broad answer is clear: Crane’s change begins in The Following, and The Beast continues with his captivity and experimentation. Those sources do not establish every detail of how the original finale’s events unfold or exactly how Crane is captured. Treat more specific readings of individual images, choices, or mechanics as interpretation unless verified directly in the games.
What happened to Kyle Crane after Dying Light 1?
In The Beast, Crane has been held and experimented on by the Baron for 13 years. Techland’s 2025 FAQ gives that duration, making the gap between the ending of The Following and the events of The Beast part of the story’s premise—not an implication that Crane quickly returned to a normal life.
Techland’s recap describes The Beast as drawing on Crane’s experiences from the first game and The Following, alongside the Baron’s abuse. That makes the sequel a continuation of his personal story as well as an account of what the experiments have done to him. Techland’s story recap covers that narrative context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need to play The Following before The Beast?
No. Techland calls The Beast a standalone game and says prior knowledge of Crane’s story can enrich the experience but is not essential. For the strongest context for why the ending of The Following matters, though, playing the first Dying Light and its expansion is the more complete route. Smektała specifically recommended revisiting the original game for Crane’s character and the series’ survival-horror style.
