The scientist’s dialogue choice does not change the quest reward, according to the published walkthroughs.
How to start Hunting Yaga
- Activate the Abandoned House Safe Zone and complete its activity.
- Return to the safe zone and talk to Max to begin the quest.
PowerPyx’s walkthrough reports that the quest unlocks shortly after activating the safe zone; GameTrek’s guide describes completing the activity before speaking with Max.
How to find and defeat Yaga
Go to the forest at night
Use the resting spot at the Abandoned House to advance time to night, then travel to the marked forest objective. Investigate the bodies in the area to start tracking the creature.
Follow the footprints and prepare for the encounter
Activate Survivor Sense to reveal Yaga’s glowing footprints and follow them. GameTrek says Yaga signals its approach with a laugh before lunging from above. Other infected may be in the area.

#1 Best Overall
- Watch for nearby Volatiles with Survivor Sense, since their positions can vary.
- Move carefully through cover and decide on an escape route before closing in.
- A community walkthrough recommends keeping the flashlight off or using it only briefly; treat this as a tactic, not a guarantee that Volatiles will stay away.
When Yaga is defeated, search its body and collect the quest item. The guide describes this as the quest finding or trophy.
How to continue after collecting the trophy
Meet Max near the power substation
Go to Max’s designated meeting place near the electrical substation. GameTrek says you can wait until morning before heading there and recommends preparing for a fight. Clear the Baron’s soldiers, then find Max; the community guide recommends entering the cabin from the rear.
Rank #2
Follow the traces to the scientist
After Max explains that Yaga was created in a laboratory, follow the traces from the cabin to the scientist, Dr. Saval. You will be asked whether to kill him or accept his offer of a bribe.
| Choice | What the guides report |
|---|---|
| Kill Dr. Saval | No change to the quest ending or reward is reported by the cited walkthroughs. |
| Accept the bribe | The community guide identifies the offer as 500 Old World Money. No change to the quest ending or reward is reported by the cited walkthroughs. |
Return to the Abandoned House
After the encounter with the scientist, return to the Abandoned House Safe Zone. GameTrek says Max has died and left his crossbow and a letter there.

Hunting Yaga rewards
GameTrek’s 2025 guide lists these rewards for the quest:
- 7,500 XP
- An Epic Hunting Crossbow
- Two Beginner Manual Pages
Other walkthroughs list a different set of additional items, including a crossbow referred to as “Lizzie” or “Lizzy,” a Beginner Manual Page, and a co-op loot crate. Because the lists differ, the reward details above are attributed to GameTrek rather than combined. The guides reviewed date from 2025 or earlier, so reward or quest behavior may differ in a later game update; Techland’s official site showed an anniversary-update notice dated September 17, 2026.
