What is Dying Light: The Beast?
Techland released Dying Light: The Beast on September 18, 2025. It is a standalone chapter starring Kyle Crane, set in the zombie-overrun Castor Woods. PlayStation describes it as an open-world action survival-horror game and a full game, not downloadable content. Earlier entries are not required to play it, though PlayStation says they add context about the world and its factions. The central loop brings together first-person traversal, melee fighting, exploration and scavenging. Day and night give that loop different pressures: daylight supports movement through the world, while being caught out after sunset means facing more dangerous threats. Techland describes the combat and parkour as more physical and grounded, and the nights as more tense; those are the publisher’s characterizations, not independent measurements.
How scary are the nights?
Night-time danger is a major part of the game’s identity, not simply a darker visual setting. In an Xbox Wire interview, Techland Franchise Director Tymon Smektała said the team wanted to restore the oppressive fear associated with the first Dying Light. Game Director Nathan Lemaire described a pitch-black forest, a flashlight that illuminates only a short distance, and the pressure of trying to read what is hidden beyond it. These comments explain the intended design, rather than guaranteeing how frightening every player will find it.

TechRadar’s September 18, 2025 review of the PC version provides a more concrete example: the flashlight helps with navigation but can risk drawing Volatiles. Triggering one can start a chase toward the UV lights of a safehouse. That makes light a trade-off—useful for seeing, but potentially costly when stealth and escape matter. TechRadar also found the tutorials sparse or unclear for some newcomers, so players unfamiliar with the series may have to work out parts of the mechanics as they go. Read TechRadar’s PC review.
Is the combat and parkour loop a good fit?
The game’s appeal rests on the combination of fast traversal and close-quarters fighting. Parkour is how you move through the open world; melee combat is the blunt, physical answer when movement or avoidance is no longer enough. TechRadar’s PC review praised the melee and parkour loop as well as the Castor Woods setting. That is one outlet’s assessment of its reviewed PC version, not a consensus verdict or a claim about performance on other platforms.
This combination is a better fit for players who want movement and combat to be central to exploration than for players seeking a primarily ranged or relaxed experience. The night-time threat adds a further preference check: if being hunted, managing escape routes and reaching safety sound like the fun, the game’s defining tension may appeal. If those pressures are a reason to avoid survival horror, they are not incidental to the premise.
Can newcomers play it, and does it have multiplayer?
Yes. The PlayStation FAQ says previous Dying Light games are not required, and the game can be played solo. The same US PlayStation listing says online co-op supports up to four players with shared progression. For PS5 online play, that listing requires PlayStation Plus; online requirements may differ on other platforms, so check the relevant storefront. See PlayStation’s current US listing.

Newcomers can enter without playing the earlier games, but should expect less background on the setting and factions. They may also find that some mechanics are not explained as clearly as they would like, according to TechRadar’s PC review. In co-op, the shared progression makes playing together more practical, while the solo option means multiplayer is not a prerequisite.

Techland’s support page says the Restored Land version is available in Standard, Deluxe and Definitive editions, and that existing owners receive a free upgrade based on the edition they previously purchased. The support page does not make every platform- and region-specific eligibility detail clear in the information summarized here, so existing players should confirm their account’s entitlement with Techland or their store before purchasing an edition. Update 1.5 added a Nightmare Experience difficulty, according to Techland’s update notes. The documented mode makes enemies stronger and more aggressive, limits resources, and adds survival systems that affect combat:

Who should play Dying Light: The Beast?
- Consider it if you want parkour and melee combat to drive exploration, like the tension of being pursued at night, or want a co-op survival-horror game that can also be played solo.
- Go in with context if you are new to the series: earlier games are optional, but PlayStation says they help explain the world and factions, and TechRadar found some mechanics under-explained in its PC review.
- Check before buying if you are choosing an edition for its extras, relying on an upgrade, or comparing platform performance. Store contents and prices vary, and the reviewed evidence here does not establish platform-specific performance.
The available review perspective is positive about the PC version’s melee, parkour and setting, while identifying onboarding as a potential weakness. That supports a clear recommendation by taste rather than a universal verdict: the game is most promising for players who want movement-led zombie combat with night-time pursuit pressure, and less obviously suited to those who want a gentle introduction or dislike chase-focused horror.
