Dyson positions the device as a way to remove a separate rough-drying stage. James Dyson describes it as wet-to-dry straightening “with air, and not hot plates,” while Dyson’s accompanying qualification says the no-heat-damage statement applies when the tool is used in wet-to-dry mode. Those are company statements, not independent clinical or comparative findings.

How its airflow is supposed to straighten hair
Dyson’s engineering explanation says air leaves two 1.5 mm apertures at a 45-degree angle. The streams converge into a downward jet that pulls over the hair as you move the tool. Dyson says this creates airflow tension that dries and aligns each section without clamping it between hot plates.
The company’s hair-science explanation is that wet hair has temporarily weakened hydrogen bonds, making it easier to reset as it dries. Emma Sheldon, Dyson’s vice president of hair care, says starting from wet lets the device combine drying and straightening instead of first rough-drying and then straightening. The mechanism is plausible as a description of how the product is designed, but the broader performance and damage implications were not independently verified in the evidence available for this review.
Two airflow speeds, a cold shot and a dedicated root-drying function are part of the control system. Air direction and section tension do much of the styling work, so technique still matters: large, uneven sections or a fast, twisting pass can leave texture behind even when the appliance is operating normally.

The controls let you choose temperature and airflow independently within the available mode limits. Boost is a Dry-mode option, not a separate wet temperature. Use the Cool setting at the end of a section or after the whole style when you want to finish with unheated airflow.

How to use the Airstrait from wet hair
Dyson’s recommended sequence is straightforward, but each stage affects the result.
- Towel-dry first. Remove dripping water so the tool is drying damp hair rather than soaking-wet hair. Excess water extends the pass time and can make sections difficult to control.
- Pre-dry the roots. Use the root-drying function or the device’s drying airflow at the scalp until the roots are no longer wet. Starting at the roots helps prevent a damp, flattened base while the lengths are being styled.
- Detangle and divide. Comb through gently and split the hair into manageable sections. Dyson’s styling guidance references a detangling comb; sectioning clips are optional aids, not required Airstrait accessories.
- Select Wet mode. Choose one of the three Wet temperatures and one of the two airflow speeds. Lower settings are a sensible starting point for fine, fragile or chemically treated hair; thicker or more resistant hair may need a higher setting, but Dyson does not publish a texture-by-texture prescription.
- Work methodically. Place a section between the arms near the roots without pressing it flat, then move steadily toward the ends. Keep the airflow aligned with the hair and repeat only when a section remains visibly damp or textured.
- Check before moving on. A section should be dry before you release it. Very large sections can feel faster but leave moisture in the interior, while very small sections increase the total handling time.
- Finish with Cool. Dyson recommends Cool mode to finish the style. Use it after a section or once the complete head is aligned.
The Airstrait is intended to replace the sequence of rough-drying and then straightening, not to eliminate preparation. Towel-drying, root work and sectioning remain part of the routine.
Can you use it on dry hair?
Yes. Dyson’s US product information explicitly describes Dry mode for touch-ups and refreshing dry hair. In practice, that means you can smooth a section that has bent overnight, refine the ends or refresh the shape after humidity without re-wetting the entire head.
Dry mode has two preset temperatures—250°F and 285°F—and a Boost option. It is not the same operating condition as wet-to-dry styling, and Dyson’s no-heat-damage qualification is specifically tied to Wet mode. Treat Dry mode as a heated styling tool: use the lowest setting that achieves the result, keep the tool moving and avoid repeated passes over the same section.
What finish should you expect?
A natural straight look
The airflow-tension design is aimed at a straight finish with movement rather than the tightly pressed appearance associated with hot plates. That can be an advantage if you want body at the roots or a softer everyday style. If your target is a very flat, sharply creased or pin-straight result, you may still prefer a conventional plate tool for the final pass.

Wavy, curly and coily hair
The Airstrait can work from damp hair because that is its intended starting state, but the evidence supplied for this review does not establish equal results across curl patterns, densities or porosities. More resistant textures may require smaller sections, slower passes or a higher Wet setting. A single pass is not guaranteed to remove a strong pattern, and the product should not be presented as universally suitable for every hair type.

Frizz, shine and breakage
Dyson markets the Airstrait with claims about reduced frizz, maintained strength, shine and less breakage. Those benefits are not independently demonstrated by the available sources. Hair condition, chemical processing, humidity and brushing technique can affect all of them. Consider the claims as the manufacturer’s intended benefits, not as a promise of a specific result.
Does it prevent heat damage or save time?
Dyson says the Airstrait uses airflow instead of hot plates and describes the wet-to-dry mode as having “no heat damage.” It also says the device reduces time spent drying and styling by 25 percent. Both statements are qualified manufacturer claims. No independent controlled comparison was identified to confirm damage outcomes, the 25-percent figure, or consistent time savings for different hair lengths and textures.
Air is not the same as zero heat: the appliance has selectable temperatures, and Dry mode reaches 250°F or 285°F before Boost is considered. Wet-mode styling may reduce the number of separate steps, but the total time still depends on how wet your hair is, how much hair you have, the section size and how many passes are needed. Use heat-protective practices appropriate to your own hair routine even though the device is marketed around airflow.
Voltage, travel and day-to-day handling
The cited US listing specifies 120 V and 1,600 W. Dyson says the appliance is engineered for the voltage of the region where it was purchased and should be used only in that region. A plug adapter changes the plug shape; it does not make an incompatible voltage safe. Check the exact model’s manual and guarantee section before taking it abroad, and do not assume a dual-voltage design unless your regional documentation says so.

The Airstrait enters standby after five minutes when its arms are open and after three minutes when they are locked, according to Dyson’s US FAQ. Standby is not a substitute for unplugging: disconnect it when you have finished. The cited US package includes a presentation case, and Dyson lists a heat-resistant travel pouch and display stand among its support materials; availability and inclusion depend on the exact listing.
Cleaning and maintenance
Airflow performance depends on unobstructed intake and outlet areas. Dyson recommends cleaning the filter once a month. Its support instructions also call for keeping the diffusers clear of hair, dust and styling-product residue and cleaning the tension bars.
- Unplug and cool the tool. Never clean it while powered or hot.
- Inspect the filter and diffusers. Look for lint, shed hair and product buildup that could restrict air.
- Clean according to the model’s support instructions. The exact removal and washing process is model-specific, so use the manual rather than improvising with liquids around the motor.
- Clear the tension bars. Product residue can interfere with smooth section movement.
- Dry every removable part fully. Reassemble only when parts are completely dry and correctly seated.
Dyson’s US support page identifies replacement filter part 972863-01. Confirm compatibility before ordering because part numbers and availability can vary by region or revision.

Dyson’s US refurbished listing states a one-year parts-and-labor warranty for refurbished hair stylers. Price and stock on that page can change, and refurbished terms are not the same as the new-product policy. Ask specifically which warranty applies to the unit you are considering.

Airstrait versus other straightening workflows
The most useful comparison is not a brand-versus-brand score; it is which workflow matches your routine.
